Who was the coolest? Vidar was. Most awesome? Vidar, again. Best future Captain? Vidar. These were three facts of life that everyone in the pride would soon come to learn if they hadn't already, and the cub had no problem in spreading the word. He knew his family knew all of that already and he'd been spreading the word to the other cubs not to get in his way unless they, too, were awesome. Just not as awesome as him. No one was, so it was best not to even entertain the thought that you were. The cub sat on his rock (it was really just a rock that was taller than the ones around it and made a nice look-out spot, so he had declared it his) and surveyed the land before him, his green eyes slitted and tail flicking back and forth as he soaked up the sun. Yes, one day he'd be a captain and have Reavers and thralls and females crawling all over his paws, begging for attention and lavishing him with gifts. But to get there, he needed to be a captain. And to be a captain, he needed a band of reavers to follow him. So...that was where he needed to start. It was a good idea to start picking now from the cubs that were before him, so he'd know what team he'd have when he was older.

It was a good day to explore, Smyg had decided. He wanted to see different places, different people. People who weren't his brothers or sisters or parents. He'd seen an awful lot of them and wanted a change of pace. And scenery. So it was that the boy noticed another cub, older than he, sitting on a rock. Hmmmm. The pale-eyed male paused, considering both cub and rock.

Vidar closed his eyes for a few moments as the sun continued to beat down, warming his dark brown coat. He was thankful for his pale mane which kept his head cool, at least, and he enjoyed the pleasant sensations of the sun for a few moments. The wind changed, however, and it brought a new scent to his nose. He sniffed, tilting his head back into the breeze, and opened his eyes. A new cub.
Well, not new in the sense that he was new to the world, but new to Vidar. A potential new 'friend' or someone to beat up and take prizes from once they were old enough to collect prizes. Interested, he stood up on his rock and turned in the direction of the breeze, sniffing interestedly. The sun was in his face now, though, and he squinted, lifting a paw to try to shield his eyes. He couldn't' see anything but he knew someone was there.
"Hey! Who is here? State your name!" he called out in what he thought was a commanding voice, but in actuality was a weird blend of squeaky cub and the starting signs of a deeper tone.

So far, Smyg wasn't very intrigued by the cub on the rock. He was more curious as to what purpose the rock served. Would the other boy still have shouted commands at Smyg if he wasn't on the rock? If it was Smyg on the rock, would he then be compelled to command others?
Most importantly, what would he gain by doing as he was told? This was most obvious when his parents ordered him around, as Smyg was as eager to avoid a cuff as the next cub. But another cub couldn't hit as hard as an adult, nor did they have such big paws to hit with.
"Why should I?" he asked instead.

The voice helped pinpoint the location of the cub, and Vidar honed in on the shadowy figure not too far from his rockpile. The other male was brown and splotchy like himself, and from the reply he got, wasn't a pushover. Good. Vidar despised pushovers.
He lowered his paw and hopped down off his rock, moving towards the smaller cub. Vidar had just started to grow, and soon he was sure he'd tower over those younger than him. He'd be all powerful, mighty, and feared! In a few weeks. For now he had to rely on his wits and words to intimidate and impress those before him.
"Because I said so," he said with sneer as he approached the other cub, pausing a few paces away. He tilted his head up a bit to look down his nose at the other cub, intense green eyes slitted once again. "What's your name and why are you looking at my rock? You can't have it. It's mine."

Smyg watched the other cub calmly. Sure the lighter boy was bigger than he and older, but that didn't bother him. He didn't think it was a satisfactory answer though. He had to do what his parents said because they said so, but not his siblings. And why should he have to obey some other cub? No one with any real authority had made it so.
"Why should I want your rock?" he countered instead, still avoiding giving the answers that had been demanded. Besides, Smyg did want to know what it was that made the rock, and possession of it, so very important.

Vidar waited for an answer, but when he got a question in return, his squinted eyes turned into a glare. This cub wasn't cooperating. While he didn't like pushovers, he also didn't like those that questioned him repeatedly.
"You shouldn't want my rock because it's mine," he said flatly, stepping a bit closer as he extended his claws. "You should tell me your name, unless you want me to call you Stupid. Because I will."
He stopped just shy of the other cub, glaring at him intensely. He was one more missed question away from a tumble, and the way Vidar was standing was more than enough warning. Head up, ears forward, teeth bared. He was still too small to do any real damage, but to him this was the real deal!
"What's it gonna be, Stupid? Your name or a fight?" He puffed himself up a bit more, probably looking a bit absurd in the process, like a little chick trying to look like he could take up the whole nest.

Frankly, Smyg didn't care what the other cub called him. Just because the lighter boy called him something didn't mean Smyg would respond. He didn't care for the fact that the older boy wouldn't answer him about the rock. Obviously it held some sort of significance, he just didn't know what that was.
"You really seem to think the rock is important," he pressed, still not answering. The darker lion had decided that it would be better if he didn't give his name to the older boy. Since he didn't care what the other called him, it seemed logical to do things this way.

"Uh, you seem to think the rock is important since you keep askin' about it," Vidar said, moving forward as he spoke. He had had enough of this guy! Thinking he was some hot shot that didn't have to tell him his name. "Listen, Stupid, I ask the questions around here, got it? You answer them. My rock is none of your concern," he added as he stopped right in front of Smyg, lowering his head to stare into the pale eyes. He narrowed his own green ones and bared his teeth in something between a grin and a snarl. "So, let's try this one more time. What's your name?" He was ready to push the other cub down and force the answer out of him, he was getting so steamed! Boy, the nerve of this guy! "Maybe if you tell me I won't kick your butt," he added in a diplomatic voice. There, that was nice. Kind of. Right? He just wanted to know the cub's name! Unless it really was Stupid...that would be kind of funny.

Hmmm...this was going nowhere fast. Clearly the older cub had no interest in explaining why the rock was important. And Smyg knew that any kind of fight would end with him on the bottom. He just wasn't interested in a confrontation. This is why he tended to lose to his own siblings, as he was busy thinking about ways to get around them without combat.
It just seemed like a waste of time and energy when there were other ways to accomplish one's goals.
"Maybe I'll just go on home, away from your rock," the darker cub replied. "After all, what would the adults say about you picking on someone smaller than you?" There wasn't too much of a size difference among most cubs, but this boy was clearly on the older side and was enough bigger to make a difference. People didn't usually care if adults were different-sized, but kids was another story.

When Vidar saw he wasn't getting the answer he wanted, he gave a little huff. He'd warned the kid! "The adults don't care," he said with a laugh, reaching out to push the other cub over with his paws. "They like when we fight! Makes us tougher." At least, that's what he figured. He never got in trouble for playing with his siblings when he was smaller, and now that he was older the adults didn't seem to pay him much mind. He could bully the younger cubs all he wanted. "So if you don't wanna give me your name, Stupid, then you should go home!" he said with a snort. "Unless you wanna fight. Then you can stay." He hadn't had a good tussle in a while, and even though he was bigger than the cub, he wouldn't pull his punches, so to speak. No pain, no gain!

No matter what insults were thrown, it didn't change Smyg's conviction that words could be ignored and fighting was a waste of strength. There were better ways to deal with this, later. So when the bigger cub pushed him, Smyg allowed it, rolling into the fall and regaining his feet quickly enough.
He shook himself off, letting stray dirt and twigs fall back to the ground.
"Fine by me," he returned, and took himself off, in the direction of his parents. He'd remember the lighter boy. And he'd prepare something...special. Yes, this would be an excellent use of his time.

Vidar was only mildly annoyed when the other cub got up to his feet after the push. Mildly because the cub turned to leave, seemingly uninterested in his rock or giving him his name. That was fine, then. He didn't want to know anything about that cub! He was stupid, and that was it.
"See ya, Stupid," he called out after the cub with a sneer before moving to hop back up on his rock. Ha. He showed him. At least now he wouldn't come around and stink up his nice clean air. He didn't have time for silly cubs like that, anyway.
