There was a glinting piece of metal in the dirt, and stooping down to inspect it, Sindri brushed it off carefully before picking it up. A pin, and very fortunately, it was pointed toward the massive structure ahead, the tower that had called to her more strongly than anything else the past few years. Plucking it off the ground, the horsewoman tucked it into one of her braids with a small smile, obscured by the veil over her mouth. Turning to the pack beast rented from Halloween proper, she intoned, "I suppose you will not die today, but this morning's tea insisted it would be soon." She patted its neck and fed it a candy and perhaps dallied a bit o'erlong in the shadow of the monstrous tower.

Home was a place that existed years ago. Home was a sister and a forge and a temple.

It was rare that the pull of fate, the patient inevitability of Death's will, should give Sindri anything but direction and confidence. Yet here she was, quietly distressed that this looming structure should replace all she treasured while housing nothing that could possibly compare. The tower was her future, nailed down and fixed upon a path once more, and whatever hopes, whatever optimism she'd once had were now as nothing because the actuality was straight ahead.

"Perhaps today is not propitious for this undertaking," she reasoned with the beast, which was horse-like though most horses were not quite so round. "I believe we'll go back, just to make sure we arrive on the correct day."

After an eventful mission, as well as a stop at a marketplace on the outskirts of Halloween town, Nergui was eager to head back to her new home and everything that lay within, waiting. There was a basket resting at the crock of one arm, and a bandage wrapped thick around the other from elbow to wrist that had a touch of darkness seeping at one edge. Beyond that one obvious injury the priestess seemed unharmed. Her attire was neat and tidy, and silver hair had been collected and bundled at the back of her head in a braided bun.

She looked every bit the elegant, graceful mare she strove to be, despite the blood lusting warrior that peeked out around the edges whenever a foe happened to cross path.

As she approached the tall silhouette of the tower the figure standing outside of it became rather hard to miss, and the mismatched eyes honed in on that thin frame where it leaned against the rotund mass of the mount beside them. From behind, with no cues from the horseman's attire, it was hard to tell gender, only as she came up to stand even with the other pale haired figure did she realize the other was a mare.

Also, she knew her.

"Sindri?" The name was accompanied with a tone heavy in disbelief, and Nergui moved around until she was fully facing the veiled mare, examining what features she could easily see of that so familiar face.

It was reflexive, what came next: a mild oh, followed by Sindri turning from Nergui to the beast with a nod and intoning, "This is a definite sign to go back." Because she'd never been shy or polite about the other's status as a bad omen. It was simply a matter of existence, and not even a bad, either. An interesting and curious one, though perhaps best approached with a horseshoes and clover.

It took a moment, for the habits of centuries to be replaced by sudden realization. Turning from the beast, eyes wide and for once, expressive in their shock, "You're alive." And then, quizzical, "Does this mean you've actually been lucky all along?"

There were a hundred questions waiting behind the one, a barely contained onslaught.

The immediate and automatic response had only been half expected. On the one hand it was how she recalled the paler mare, but on the other, after everything that had happened with the clans, it seemed at least to Nergui a somewhat ridiculous thing to hold onto. She regarded the jewelcrafter with a level gaze, lips stretched into a momentarily thin line before ticking up at the corners into a smile. "I am alive."

Superstition had had a heavy influence in the circles both mares had been a part of. A collection of families, intermingling, save for Nergui and Bastion. The two dark skinned babes that had been deemed bad omens, on the outside, always looking in.

"Lucky?" Her head tilted, taking a moment to consider everything that had happened since the fall. "I wouldn't say luck had much to do with anything beyond the actual survival of the isles fall." Considering the insanity, the messy business between herself and her guardian before the pieces had all fallen into place. "Determination, I think, is more accurate." That was followed with a proud smile.

"It is good to see you escaped the destruction of our former home." They had not always seen eye to eye, but there was something to be said for such unabashed honesty, and Nergui did appreciate Sindri for her never pretending to feel anyway than she actually did.

She was also a damn fine chess player.

"Perhaps you were a sign of things to come, and now that they are past, the significance is only in looking back. Although since there were two..." Sindri's voice trailed off thoughtfully, mind going down the paths where two such children may have greater meaning. There was much that was different in the world they occupied, but the 'crafter seemed much the same.

She only stayed lost in though for a moment before seeming to remember something, "Oh yes," and then she gave Nergui a small hug which was only slightly off as this was a thing they did not do. At least to one another,

It was perhaps less a hug and more hug-like. As if she was following a mental diagram. Apparently Sindri had some sense of social nicety, and continued by reassuring the priestess, "I am very glad you are not dead, though I'm sure, being dead is a charming experience from that side, rather than that of those experiencing loss." A pause and then, voice soft and even, "My sister, Jora, have you seen her since...?"

The thread of hope in her voice, after seeing a familiar face alive and well (discounting the bandages and altered eye) was unmistakable.

"There are two," she corrected gently, dark features a mix of annoyed amusement. "Bastion survived as well." To Nergui, the irony of that was hilarious. How many of their clan had believed them bad omens? And now how many of those same horsemen remained? A cool little smile bloomed over dark burgundy lips, and a light chuckle followed before the thoughts were pushed away and the present returned to.

Just in time for light arms to wrap around her petite frame in an awkward hug. It took the mare by surprise, and she stood still, eyes a touch wide, before returning the gesture with a soft pat to Sindri's shoulder.

"I have not seen her, but if she had been off island, as I believe she was at the time of the attack, then you should hold out hope for her return." There were many that had been away, stationed in outposts or exploring the world, that had missed the tragedy of their homes being destroyed, but they were returning now, more than the priestess would veer have hoped. "Do not give up hope."

Once upon a time she'd have told the other mare that hope was a foolish thing, and that she should face reality.

But things changed, Nergui had changed. She was a softer, kinder creature than she had been before. The Insanity had made her vulnerable, but so many other's had had positive influences on the mare.

Sindri, distancing herself once more, nodded solemnly as that thread of hope strengthened. Nergui was both priestess and omen (though the nature of latter was now debatable) and both these things meant her guiding words would not be taken lightly. The crafter took the pack beast's lead once again, and glanced toward the Tower.

"Perhaps that is the answer then," she commented to the fat, sturdy creature, scratching its ears for a moment before gently tugging it forward. She would go home today.

Of course as this was Sindri, her next question was, "What happened to your eye?"

Nergui had been expecting this question, because she had never known Sindri to be one to hold her tongue when something puzzled her. As such, the mare didn't even blink, but merely smiled gently and made a gesture to indicate they should start walking.

"Are you aware of the nature of the Isles' destruction?" She would have to start at the beginning for this, because if she were not thorough there would be many more questions, she was sure of it. "Beyond simply an attack by the hunters. The actually catalyst."

She almost said Death's will but that was obvious. And nearly the word hubris as she appreciated the cycle of tales, but that was much too flippant and unhelpful besides. Instead she answered vaguely, "I journeyed to what remained but what could have caused...that..." Sindri trailed off, shaking her head.

Dark features took on a distinct look of disgust at the mention of their former home. She had loved the isles, but they had been reduced to something loathsome and wrong.

"A great phoenix composed of Insanity, that was the weapon the Hunters wielded against us. It rose into the sky like something out of a nightmare, and when it came down to crash into the earth beneath our feet, everything shattered." It was the most she'd spoken about the destruction since her escape.

"Some of us that were on the isles when it hit were struck by that Insanity, and we became infected." A delicate hand lifted and she touched the apple of her cheek beneath the glow of her golden eye. "It left a mark upon our bodies, as well as a..." she frowned, groping for a word. "An imprint on the mind." She had come to accept her own blight, embrace it to an extent, and the paranoia was all but gone when not under duress.

Dropping her hand again, she watched the other mare's face, gauging her reaction. "It is not contagious." An important point. "The level of infection varies in those affected. For some it is very mild, a soft whispering through the mind and a touch of ashy color on the skin, or golden eyes."

Dark lips pursed. "Bastion is also infected." No doubt the jewelcrafter would take that as a sign.

"There are those who consider the insane as blessed and further seeing," Sindri offered, but did not state that she felt similar. It was a thing she would have to take into consideration further than an interest in the trivia of the world's cultures.

There was a lull as they walked, and then the smaller mare stated, "If you have been with the remains of the Clan since then, then you must know much about how this," she gestured to the tower ahead, "...came to be."

Nergui had always considered herself far seeing, so she said nothing in response to the little tidbit provided by the other mare. Seldom did silence steered her wrong in Sindri's company.

The tower, however, was something she was more than happy to elaborate on. Smiling, she adjusted the basket on her arm. "The tower is a spoil of war. Medea lead us on a campaign to claim it, as well as our legacy." Here was a true believer. "We had been little better than exiles, forced to accept the sad pity of others, and facing destitution and oblivion, but Medea brought us back from that depressing fate." She smiled, bright and beatific.

"There was sacrifice, but the means justified the ends. If not for the Priestess' swift actions, we'd have been lead down a dead end path."

The focus on the priestess, had Sindri cocking her head in consideration. "So the Priestess truly is Death's chosen?" There had been rumors, but it was not without a pang to hear that it been Medea's hand and not Aisa's that Death had driven to lead the Clan. The heir had always been a figure greatly admired by Sindri, even after her crush had faded into something more reasonable. But she was not one to argue against the greater will, though hope for the heir remained.

For a moment, the mare wanted to argue the nature of dead end paths, and to inquire as to the destitution of the Clan. Instead Sindri found herself once again distracted by the structure ahead.

"What is it like, inside?" It was not the islands, could never be the home of her childhood and formative centuries. But perhaps it would be a good place to return again and again in the coming age. "We share it?"

Dark lips pursed, slowing any quick response to Sindri's questions to force herself to think about her answer carefully. Here was where she needed to tread carefully, or else risk turning away those wandering souls that sought to return to them. What had happened between Death and Medea and been a messy affair, but in the end, what had happened was needed to ensure the survival of their people.

"Medea is the leader of all. She has surpassed Death." Asia was still the protector of their clan, their voice.

The tower was a much easier topic, safer. The mare didn't have to pick her words carefully, she could speak freely. "We do share it, to an extent. There are multiple levels within, and though large from this angle, it is so much bigger once inside." Startlingly so. It had been a shock the first time the priestess had seen it. "There are four man levels, each reserved for a different clan. Death sits nearest the top. It is not the island, but the light of the forge baths everything in a soft glow, and the scent of tooled metal is thick in the air."

Home.

Yes. It was Home.

The interest in the Tower faded back at Nergui's description of Medea. Slowly, Sindri turned her head to give the other a solemn gaze before stating calmly, "Nothing surpasses Death." And then, after a moment, asked in a tone the other was familiar with, "Priestess, have you suffered so greatly as to lose faith in the one who raised you up?" It was not an accusatory tone, but instead the sort that indicated the mare was very ready to discuss this, for centuries if necessary, without ever budging an inch in her own belief.

Sindri spoke as one who had experienced loss and questioning in her life, but never truly hardship. In the aftermath, her own faith was shaken and fragile, but with time and meditation, Sindri was able to not just reaffirm, but strengthen in her devotion to Death.

But she had never been marked out as Nergui or her cousin had. Even within her own strict home, the crafter was much indulged where her sister was held to a viciously strict and demanding standard. A constant wanderer and easily able to blend with the folk of Halloween, she didn't have to face the tragedy of their clan's destruction every day through the simple act of waking up.

Despite her words though, Sindri's steps did not falter or hesitate as she walked toward the Tower, Medea's domain.
