The brightly colored lion was nervous. And doing his best to not let it show. As he paced back and forth, his tail lashed the air furiously. The idea of having to fight for a place wasn't a terribly new one. But when it came to himself, the very thought seemed terrifying.

He certainly wasn't as big as some of the lions he saw accepting challenges, but knowing his luck, he'd end up facing some giant of a lion.

Shaking his mane irritably, Piripi sighed and sat. It would be his turn soon enough.

Thanks for the start. Lovely lion btw! If he doesn't win this round he's welcome to rechallenge!

A bright marked lion had gotten his attention some time ago. Although the male paced back and fourth yet he never came forward in challenge. When he saw the lion just sitting around, Bousvor decided enough was enough.

The tawny lion rose to his feet and walked over to the elegantly marked male. Either this lion would fight, or Bousvor would run him off. "State your business."

Attention caught by the tawny lion that approached, Piripi sat up a little straighter and finally managed to still his twitchy tail. Heaving a relieved sigh, he bit back the sharp retort he wanted to make and instead kept his voice as respectful as possible.

"Waiting for my turn to fight, sir. There were others before me and since I didn't know the protocol I was trying to be courteous. Does this mean it's my turn now?"

With a nervous eagerness, Piripi bounded to his feet and hoped that he didn't look as pathetic as he felt. Maybe holding back had been a bad idea, but he hadn't known exactly how these things worked and he hadn't wanted to get himself killed through some sort of diplomatic mis-step!

Thanks! It would appear he is a failface for now, tough. XD

Bousvor looked down his nose at the male before him. He sneered back at the male. "Waiting your turn. Are you going to wait to be fed as well?" He drew back, deciding this male wasn't worth being allowed into the pride.

"You don't have iron in your blood. In fact I'm not even sure you have spine." Bousvor gave another sneer to see if he could make the male react. "Be gone with you unless you tell me what you want." He took an aggressive stance to encourage a spineless lion to reconsider his position. He'd never encountered any lion who would just wait like this.

Piripi had many acknowledged faults. He was vain, easily distracted and a little too inclined to acting the clown. But he was not some spineless fool.

"Actually, I believe I did tell you what I wanted," he said with a quiet growl. "You know, before the part where you started spouting insults and implying that I'm no good because I chose caution. So sorry if that offends you, Mr. Big and Tough, but I'd rather not get myself killed because I broke some sacred taboo without knowing it. Particularly when all I hear is along the lines of, 'Oh you just fight someone' with nothing else to go by."

Getting to his feet, he stretched and wondered how much longer he could manage to fake being calm.

"Not everyone has brawn like yours to get them through life. Some of us had caution beaten into our skulls because it was the only way to survive alone to adulthood. So. We fighting or what?"

Inwardly, he was proud of himself for not simply shrugging and walking off. He had no doubt that this other lion was going to make this as awful as possible for him, but this was something he had to do.

Piripi just hoped that whatever rules were in place for this sort of thing wouldn't let him be killed.

I think this is going to be a battle of words instead of a fight. XD Bousvor isn't normally so mean nor does he talk so much. o.o

Any other lion of the Stormborn would have called him out for a challenge at those insults. The well muscled male stared at the wanna-be challenger, then laughed in his face. "No, you simpered your wish at me. You didn't tell ME," Bousvor practically roared the last word. He had been in many challenges yet non had ever been like this. Most challengers would come up and state their intent, not wait their turn. It was as though this lion didn't really want to join.

This lion needed to learn politeness wouldn't get him far in this pride. Bousvor tossed his mane, "if you're not willing to take a hit then you don't belong here. Go back home until you're grown up then maybe come back and try again." The male let a shrug ripple from his shoulders and down his back. "No I think you're not going to fight today." Bright green eyes watched the bright patterned male under the cover of his brows. He was looking to see how far he could push the youngster before maybe he snapped.

With a heavy sigh, Piripi thought that this really wasn't going as well as it should have.

"I see, so a desire to not be killed for no good reason is simpering. I was aiming for being respectful, but I suppose different folk have different standards for that."

He paused, still wanting to try and somehow turn this around. At least this big lion was giving him information whether he meant to or not. He hadn't broken any rules yet and if he could get past this tough beast, it seemed that anyone could fight anyone. Useful.

"I don't have a home to go back to, that's rather the point," Piripi had to laugh a little at himself as he said it. Hopefully the other would realize that the laugh was self-depreciating. "And I believe a fight of some sort is already happening, but I doubt it's the sort that either or us would prefer."

The gaze Piripi turned on the tawny lion held a tinge of genuine, albeit grudging, respect. This fellow was stubborn. But he was also showing remarkable control in spite of his evident annoyance. Piripi could respect that. He also rather liked that he still had his hide attached.

After a moment's thought, he shrugged a little. Oh, he could lunge and try to get a hit or two in, but he suspected that the bigger lion would be expecting that. There was no point in being humiliated more than once in a day. His pride was already taking hits a-plenty. It was time for a strategic retreat.

"Very well. I concede to your superior logic and reasoning. Clearly I'm not ready for this today."

Maybe not today, but oh, tomorrow would be a very different story now that he had a better idea of how these things worked.

magnadearel
Oh dear. I'm sorry XD;;; I swear Piripi wasn't this strange in my head.

two more posts and then we're done.

"If you're not willing to fight you won't get anywhere. We want strong lions in this pride." Respect was a part of it too, but it had to be earned. Bousvor had the respect, and this young upstart wanted to try get some. Playing Mr. Nice was not a good way to go. He stood steady as the male talked. If what he said was true then Bousvor would expect him to come back and try again.

"So it is, but it won't get you in." He flex his claws into the dirt and grinned. He nodded his head as the challenger backed down without either one ever exchanging a blow. Clearly his weirdest challenge yet, but if he wasn't willing to raise a paw then he wasn't ready. "I hope you decide what you want, and maybe I'll see you back here again." He nodded his head, but didn't move. Nor would he until the challenger turned and left.

Nodding to show he'd heard and understood, Piripi deliberately backed up a few steps before turning and heading on his way. He wanted to hunt and rest.

And think.

As he walked away, he turned his head over his shoulder to return the other lion's grin.

"Oh, I know what I want. Doubtless you'll see me again sometime."

With that Piripi resumed his pace. His stomach was growling both from hunger and from nerves. Time to find something to eat.

magnadearel
Sorry for the delay. Had a bit of a crisis hit.

Twilight Jaws
No problem. RL crises always come first. Fin!

Bousvor rumbled his approval and grinned. "Good. Maybe next time you'll come prepared." He let the male leave unhampered. With any luck the challenger would return and prove his worth to the pride. He hated to turn those away, but rules were rules. The pride valued strength and wouldn't react well to a lion who couldn't hold his own. With the lion leaving, he turned and went back to his post under the shade.
