The Houses

Any leopard who joins the pride has the right to form a house around their bloodline. The largest houses are obviously the oldest bloodlines, as they've had plenty of time to grow. There can only be one head of any house, and the head of the house represents the family in the Senate. The head of the household is the law of the house, determining who lives, who dies, and who they will offer patronage to.

The Senate

The Senate votes on all important issues in the pride, and every Household has one Senator to represent their interests. The Head of the House and the Senator are one in the same. While the Heads of the Household determine the law within their own house, the Senate determines the Law of the Pride, which takes precedence over any individual house's rules.

Patronage

When a leopard joins the pride, they may choose not to form their own house right away, and instead find a more established house to act as their Patron. Often they will take a mate from their Patron's house and be considered a part of the family.

At any time this leopard may choose to leave and found their own house, or anyone from their bloodline may choose to leave the patronage to form their own house. However, as there may only be ONE House per bloodline, once a new House is founded other members of the bloodline may either join the new house, or remain under the patronage. Two siblings, for example, may not form two houses, only one may do so. If two siblings wish to form a house and do not agree who the Senator will be, the leader of the house will be determined by their patron.

Mates

Once a mate is taken, it is considered to be "for life" as it bonds two houses together. Divorce is allowed in extreme circumstances, however whether or not this is allowed will be determined by the Head of the Household. The Head of the House does not need the permission of anyone under their banner to perform a divorce. Including the mated pair.

Mated pairs are preferred to be heterosexual, but this is not considered "necessary" if the head of the household determines it to be so. Arranged marriages are fairly common, but mainly for the Head of the House and their heir.

If two leopards from different houses are to become a mated pair, the Heads of the House will determine which leopard will leave which household.

While cubs from non-mated pairs are regarded as fairly common and "not a big deal", if a mated leopard who is NOT living with their family has cubs with another leopard, the Head of the House has the right to execute them, and will then send the cubs to live with the executed mate's family.

Cubs

Cubs are considered to be under the care of their entire House, but mainly their parents, their nanny, and ESPECIALLY the head of the house. Cubs have little say in what their future position will be, it is determined by those listed above, who can determine what the cub's strengths are, and where they should be directed. That said, their training doesn't really start until their Juv stage.

Servants

Servants are not, generally speaking, treated with any disrespect. They are a part of the family, and are as loyal as any of the family's members. Poorly treated servants, after all, are likely to grumble, complain... and sometimes trade secrets with a House's enemies for a favor.

An excellent servant is the House Head's right hand, and a good, trustworthy member of the House which is sought out by everyone in Carthage.

Colors

Not considered to be relevant in the pride.

Religion

The Gods are worshiped as a Pantheon, and Priests/Priestesses fall outside their Houses, and choices on their behalf can only be made by a Senate Vote.

History

With the fall of Rome, Carthage rises.

With the fall of the once mighty Binadamu, Atia, the pride's elder, took those leopards who remained and gave them a land of their own. Bitter from the loss of their home, she blamed their previous Caesar, a man who she'd previously devoted herself to.

Forming Carthage, Atia builds the Senate, naming herself the new Caesar, and casting out the former Lions and Cheetahs from their new home, blaming them for the fall of the Binadamu, and cursing their weakness.

Ranks - High

Caesar

Caesar can be a role held by either a male or female leopard, and is held for life once it is bestowed. The rank is given by vote by the Senate, and while the leopard who holds the title is the de facto leader of the pride, their say is not the only one that matters. Caesar can veto a choice thought to be wrong for the pride, even if the Senate votes overwhelmingly in favor of the motion, and also runs the Senate meetings. Caesar's vote counts for five votes, whereas everyone else (sans four specially elected positions) only gets the one. In any votes where there is a tie, Caesar has the deciding vote.

Of course, as a result the role is the largest target for assassination, but also the most powerful role one can hold.

Head of the House

]Every family in the pride has a Head of the House who represents the family in the Senate. There is only one Head of the House at a time, and the larger the house, the more weight they carry in the Senate. Only Caesar has more than one vote, though the larger and more dangerous Houses carry a great deal of weight in other ways.

It important to note that the only way a new house is formed is if a newcomer enters the pride. A member of a house is a member of that house and only that house unless they marry into another. Families are expected to be large, and of course only those born into the family can be chosen to lead them.

A Head of House can be any member of the household, whether they are born to the previous Head of the House, a sibling of the head of house, cousin, niece or nephew. The choice is always made by the current head of the House, and whether the Head of House dies or chooses to step down, their replacement will step in and hold their Senate Seat as soon as it happens. The position of Senator and Head of House can only be held by a full blooded Leopard.

Major Houses and their Leaders

Major Houses are called this due to their size, and perceived power. It is unlikely that anyone who is not the head of a major house could ever be voted into the position of Caesar.

Minor Houses and their Leaders

Minor Houses are smaller, or newer houses which have only just earned their way into the pride. They likely have a patron, who would be the head a major house.

If a Minor house were to be raised to being a Major house, it would be a meta-plot event, as the raising would be put to a vote in the Senate.

Head of House's Mate

The Mate of the Head of the House, while they do not hold a Senate Seat, is the second most important member of the House. They are, of course, married in from another house, and these are usually arranged for the most powerful matches.

While the Head of the House controls the house's politics, their mate will watch over the house and ensure that it runs smoothly at all times. Like the Senators, this member of the house can be male or female. They hold a great deal of power and respect.

Senate Positions

In the Senate there are several special duties that are assigned to those who work under Caesar. Head of War, Head of Defense, Head of Law, and Head of Pride Affairs. These positions are voted in by the Senate, and it is nearly impossible to get the votes for these positions without being a Major House.

These roles have two votes in the Senate instead of the standard one, and in votes that concern their area of specialty they have three votes.

Head of War: Exactly what it sounds like, this leopard is the General of the pride and is expected to be able to rally the warriors of the pride in cases where they are needed. Their house is expected to not only coordinate the warriors of other houses, but have the most warriors in the pride.

Head of Defense: In charge of the protection not just of their own house, but the entire pride. Their house is expected to both coordinate the guards of all other houses, and also have the most guards in the pride.

Head of Law: While for major issues, the Senate votes on changes in pride law, for minor issues - murder, theft, etc. the head of Law has their own court where they are judge, jury, and executioner. In cases where a member of the Head of Law's house is involved in the case, Caesar takes this position.

Head of Pride Affairs: Pride births, local hunting, and festivals are all under the Head of Pride Affair's gaze, and they have to ensure that the pride itself is running smoothly at all times. By many they are considered the right hand of Caesar since their opinion is most needed in day-to-day affairs.

Ranks - Leopards

For those who are not in the senate, pride affairs mainly involve the running of the household. Families live together and work together, and the larger the family the more sway they hold. Brothers, sisters, aunts, uncles, cousins, and grandparents all remain together from birth until death unless they are chosen to mate with and move in with another family.

The Head of the House's mate generally ensures that everything runs smoothly inside the house, a more difficult job in larger families - but smaller houses have their own problems ensuring that their bases are all covered.

Guards: Obviously, the house itself must be protected, and the guards are there not just to defend the pride, but more specifically make sure that their entire house and all it's members are safe.

Hunters: Everybody has to eat. A house without hunters is a house that will starve.

Cub-Sitters: Everybody has a job to do, and not everyone has time to sit down and watch their cubs all day if someone is a hunter and the house doesn't have very many. The cub sitter is also the teacher of the cubs, and is expected to tell stories, find a cub's aptitude for their future, and above all make sure the future of the house is secure. THIS IS THE ONLY POSITION A MATED-IN MEMBER OF THE FAMILY (sans the head of the house) IS NOT ALLOWED TO HOLD. ONLY A MEMBER OF THE HOUSE WHO WAS BORN THERE MAY RAISE CUBS.

Scholars: Only larger houses usually have scholars who record the family legacy. A sign of prestige.

Healer: If someone gets hurt, you need a healer. Not every family will have one, but it's a lot easier and safer to bring an injured family member back home than to somebody else's House.

Artisans: Also usually only held by larger houses, and seen as a great luxury.

Soldiers: Once a house gets large enough, instead of guards they will begin to have soldiers who can be devoted to the pride's military in times of war. These are most likely to rise up before Scholars or Artisans, and once a house can begin training soldiers it is usually seen as a rising force to be reckoned with.

Apprentice: As soon as a cub grows up, the Head of House, their mate, and the cub sitter will sit down and determine what kind of apprenticeship their cub should hold. They will then study with their family, or in cases where the family does not hold the position already, they will study with an allied House and then return.

Ranks - Priesthood

For now, the priesthood will stay small/non-existent. They will forgo their place in their house and only serve the Gods. However, should they have any cubs through dalliances, or if they do take a mate from among their fellow priests, any of their children would be sent to their house, or split between the two leopard's households.

Only leopards will be able to be priests, and the Chief Priest would be elected every four years.

Non-Leopard Ranks - Servants

"A Senator is only as powerful as their lowest servant is loyal."

All other species are accepted in the pride, however they will never be able to have their own house, or be able to join the Senate. They will join a House which will act with their "Patron" and will be considered "Servants".

Any dog-like creature will be considered the "better" servant and will be highly sought out. They will be able to hold the most positions as a servant, and are most likely to be treated as "family" even though they cannot be the head of the house.

Wild Dogs, Hyenas, and Familiars can hold the following positions, and two special positions Leopards cannot hold:

Assistant: This is a special role. Only one Servant in a house can hold it, and their duty as assistant is to the Head of the House's Mate. They will be considered the left hand in the house hold. If for any reason the head of the house does NOT have a mate, then they MUST have an assistant in charge of those duties. This is considered the highest rank a servant can hold, and in some cases they are more highly regarded than leopards or even the head of the house's mate. This position can be held by Wild Dogs, Hyenas, or familiars.

Guards

Hunters

Cub-Sitters

Scholars Familiars Only

Healer

Soldiers Wild Dogs Only

Wild Dogs Can Also Hold The Following Position

Assassin: Every now and then, a Senator may determine that someone has to die. It would be considered 'beneath' a leopard to perform such a task, and so in secret a warrior Wild Dog will be selected to hold the position. This is a secret position known only by the Head of the House or potentially their mate. Sometimes it will be a simple hunter or healer. Sometimes the Assassin will be the Senator's assistant. This role will not appear on the dog's Cert.

Non-Leopard Ranks - "Slaves"

This position can only be held by lions, cheetahs, and hybrids. While this creature is not ACTUALLY a slave, as they can leave if they so choose, they are considered to be the lowest of the low. While Lions and Cheetahs CAN actually be considered Servants, hybrids never will be, and will always be allocated to the lowest roles in the pride.

The reason for these lowly positions is that they can "corrupt" the leopard bloodline. Even if a senator or Caesar were to have hybrid cubs, they would never be considered members of their House.

Hybrids, Cheetahs, and Lions can hold the following ranks:

Guards

Hunters

Hybrids are the only creatures who hold this role. They do not belong to a House, they belong to the pride itself, and are considered to be underlings of the Head of Pride Affairs. While some hybrids can rise from this rank to act as a Guard or a Hunter, this will be their default rank from birth.

Laborer: The "slave" position allocated to hybrids. They do whatever the Head of Pride Affairs determine they should. This usually involves moving things, digging dens, carving rocks, cleaning, or disposing of dung.

I'm Good Enough
Name: Lumiere
Image:
User Image
Desired Rank:
New house or seeking a patron?: New House! Lumiere will be Head c:
Personality: Quiet but determined to make a name for himself, Lumiere looks gentle but he lives up to the skull mark on his hindquarters & face. He is a little too young to be wise just yet but he'll learn.
History: Born to a sweet feminine leopard and a grumpy leopardess, Lumiere was raised with love but craved more. He heard about Carthage and the idea of starting a legacy appealed to him greatly. He met Dalziel and recruited the wayward wilddog to be his companion, stumbling upon the petite and feminine Nzurim'oja, recruiting her to be his second-in-command.

I'm Good Enough
Name: Dalziel
Image:
User Image
Desired Rank: Guard
New house or seeking a patron?: Patron to Lumiere’s house.
Personality: Dalziel is a rough-and-tumble wild dog who loves to fight. He is good at taking orders but he'll always be a bit snarky to anyone who isn't Lumiere. He'll always be a bit snarky to Lumiere too, but he does care for the pink leopard.
History: Raised rogue, Dalziel is a boisterous wayward soul who loves a challenge. He loves to fight and scrap and is in rather fantastic physical status. He isn't all too keen about being subservient to leopards but he likes Lumiere and figures serving them won't be too bad as long as he is serving a good cause.

I'm Good Enough
Name: Nzurim’oja
Image:
User Image
Desired Rank: Assistant
New house or seeking a patron?: Patron to Lumiere’s house.
Personality: Sweet and very soft-spoken, Nzurim'oja is trained as a healer. She doesn't talk unless spoken to around strangers, but when around people she trusts and can be very in your face. She is very much the motherly sort.
History: Born to loving rogues, and raised with cheeton siblings, Nzurim'oja doesn't really see species as important. When she was asked by Lumiere to join him in his journey, she agreed easily and struck out to make her own family. It doesn't matter to her that her family currently encompasses a wild dog and leopard.

> U >
Let me know if any of this needs tweaking! I am just going off what I understand is OK ~

edit: also it entertains me that Lumiere means light. So his house would be a LightHouse > U >
