His dreams were getting so much worse... The nights ever more hostile, and the shadows practically sang with the ominous music he thought he had escaped. In his dreams they flickered back and force, gleaming eyes once behind him now peered back at him from a mere hair's breadth away. All that which he had been reassured was nothing more than a trauma from a previous experience seemed all the more real as the days went on.
To him, these words now fell on deaf ears. His offspring might have thought him paranoid but he knew better; the ghosts were coming for him and nothing he or his mate might say, would stop it. He had to be held to account for his crimes, he had to answer for what he had done, and with each day he had fled from this, the wrath of those ghosts had become worse.
Suffice it to say that they were positively ravenous by now...
Thus, for the safety of his family, Spectre had taken his leave under the cover of darkness. Sparing them the confusion of a farewell, he had simply 'wandered off'. It was better for him to do this alone... this way the ghosts wouldn't come for his children, nor would they pursue his mate.
It was safer this way.
...Yes, much safer.

Areo was normally very level headed and thought things through. He rarely got angry, but when he did it was for a reason. When that did happen, it never ended very well.
At least from his experience.
As much as Primitus and Bokoboko had done to raise all of them right with kindness and good intentions there was something in their blood that would always be there, it was just dormant until it was released.
He could be vengeful and full of rage when that happened, but it was so rare, so very rare that he didn't dwell on the moments when it happened. He just merely "forgot".
It seemed he had been traveling a lot more at night, which suited him because he liked it better, it was far more quite than during the day. Though tonight it seemed he would not be alone in his travels. A rather bright pale lion was up ahead and he seemed to glow against the darkness the night offered.
He figured he would walk towards him and see what happened.

The paw steps could already be heard, the faint whispers. No sooner had he placed a distance between him and his loved ones than he could hear them. They truly didn't have the compassion to give him further respite, whatever they had possessed had been expended on allowing him to move away from his family so that they weren't 'collateral' damage in the process. Unsurprisingly the lion was skittish, glancing here and there, and frequently over his shoulder as though he was half expecting to be jumped upon.
...it was then that he saw Areo.
He paused, his breath seeming to cease as he regarded the approaching lion and then, in an instant, he seemed to discard his concern. Areo was not a spirit, Areo was much too dark, enveloped and embraced by the shadows. The spirits were brighter, they stood out more, this one did quite the opposite...
"Go back," he warned huskily and shook his head. "It is dangerous here."

He paused in his footsteps at the lions words. What was he talking about? He looked around and didn't see anything. This was curious, perhaps he was mad with age?
"What is dangerous? Can I do something to help?" He said as he approached a little bit closer and continued to look around, thinking perhaps that he had missed something. Though he saw nothing still and this was all very curious to him. He kept his ears alert but yet still heard nothing. "What is your name friend?" Perhaps this would lighten the mood a tad, asking him his name.

"Go back!" he warned again, raising a paw and taking a few hops away to distance himself. "They can't see you, if they see you they'll take you," he continued and shook his head, his weary gaze glinting with a touch of fear. "They'll carry you off, make you theirs, you won't be whole again," he murmured. He paused, noting the darkened fur once more and furrowed his brow, they'd do more than take Areo, they would skin him so that the shadows couldn't hide him any more!
"Don't let them see you," he said again, attempting to shoo the lion away. "They will take your fur, they will take your shadows. You will be like them, always chasing, always feeding," he backed away, his furrowing bow deepening.
"Don't let them know you have seen me, Spectre is a cursed name." he pointed out. "If they know, they will come for you, they will take everything you have..."

Areo was worried, her gaze darting around and then after a moment it sunk in. This lion was mad. Had to be. There was no one around. Maybe the poor male had the sight and it warped his brain. He had seen it happen before. He frowned.
He paused in his footsteps, he figured he'd entertain the poor male since that was all he could really do at this point. He caught the lions name as he spoke, in a reference to himself. "Are you sure there isn't anything I can do to help?" He asked, just wanting to make sure before he entertained the males wishes. He felt as though if he stuck around for too long it might not end well on the males behalf. Especially if he got violent towards Areo. "I wont let a soul know I've seen you Spectre."
He was concerned for the way he described these unseen beings. Take his fur? Sounded like some of the prides that were a ways away. They were horrible creatures. Perhaps he had escaped from their grasp and his mind was just shell shocked.
Spectre looked pained, clearly troubled by Areo's decision to remain close. In an ideal world the lion would have prefered that he fled immediately. It was better to never ask questions, it was better to do as you were told and be spared. Ah, but it seemed no one in these parts was aware of the dangers, his hunters had done well to mask their threat and even existence from the rest of the world.
It made it so difficult to warn others, they were just so trusting and unaware of what they would face if they were found. Fur rended from their bodies, they would become as unseen as the others...and then all they would know was the hunt. They would have no choice, they would be compelled and there would be no escape.
Why would no one listen, why would no one let him keep them safe?
"They already know," he uttered softly in reference to Areo's reassurances. "They see everything, they hear everything," he paused and shook his head. "But they haven't seen you yet, not properly... There is still time. You can still escape and keep your fur!"
He wondered if perhaps he should just listen to the male and leave. Areo knew nothing of otherworldy things, not besides Gods and he knew some of them could be unmerciful. Then again, the lion could just be mad. Areo wasn't really sure at this point anymore.
After much internal debating he decided he'd listen to the male. He seemed very eager to have Areo leave from his sight and this worried him but he figured there wouldn't be any harm if he did just listen to the male and walk away from him. "If you're certain there is nothing I can do for you, then I shall take leave." His voice helt a hint of sadness. He wanted to help him.
"I pray that you find peace." He meant that, sincerely. He didn't know what was ailing the poor beast, but he hoped he wouldn't have to suffer for too long whatever he was dealing with.
"Nothing? Yes... nothing," Spectre paused, considered his words for a few moments and then shook his head abruptly. There was nothing Areo could do for him, not that wouldn't cause the black lion great harm. Instead, the only thing he could do was run away, so long as he was safe then Spectre would feel some form of fleeting comfort. He would know that the hunters wouldn't take him, that they wouldn't hurt him...
"Run," he said at last and motioned with his paw to the way Areo had come, his expression grim. In a strange way, it seemed that Spectre was settling now that he knew Areo was going to do as he had requested. The knowledge that another wouldn't be caught in the cross fire appeared to be of great comfort to the ghostly lion.
He watched as the lion shoo'd him and told him to run. There wasn't anything more he could offer the male and he didn't want his help it seemed so he would have to accept the situation as it was. With a frown he unwilingly turned and headed away from the pale male hoping that he found peace within his soul.
