(VAGUELY CYOA) HUMAN STUDIES: SUPERSTITIONS

It Begins:
An extracurricular class pops up on the notice boards. It seems that Professor Winter is taking a small handful of students to the Human World! It stresses that this particular trip will be a little different: it will be held on the (holiday) Halloween. The goal of this little trip is to allow students to see something a little unique. That being: how Humans act on Halloween's most important Holiday.

If you are interested, the notice announces, you should meet Professor Winter at her office. It also promises bonus credits!

On the appointed day, you go and meet with the Professor. She explains the situation to you, and has you sign a bunch of official looking documents - thankfully, they're not demon contracts. They're just the legal papers necessary to allow an underaged creature into the Human world, and that by signing they understand that they could be in big trouble and blah blah blah jail time blah blah ruined forever-

You sign the paper without reading the rest.

The object of this trip, Winter explains, is to study Humans on this particular night. There is something they call superstitions, which she explains is defined as 'a widely held but unjustified belief in supernatural causation leading to certain consequences of an action or event, or a practice based on such a belief'. Basically: silly things that Humans do because they feel it causes or hinders things beyond their ultimate control. Apparently, she continues, such superstitions run rampant on the Human side of Halloween (the holiday).

As a guest in the Human World, you are expected to try and spot these apparent superstitions, and try to figure out the reason behind them. Though, she stresses, even just seeing them without understanding their reasoning could still be a fantastic learning point. There might even be a more detailed class on them in the future, too.

Winter equips you with a sort of glamour that would render you invisible to Humans, and finally gives you your temporary (and heavily conditional) passport, and sends you on your way.

You find yourself in a random town, in a random place in the Human World. You may find out where you are, of course, but you can also choose to be blissfully ignorant of your exact location. You can explore a bit - just a little bit - before getting down to business!

THE OOC

YOU ARE NOW IN THE HUMAN WORLD
  • Please respond to the prompt above either in this thread if solo, or, if you'd like to adventure with friends, make a PRP!
  • Your character may explore their area if they like, just be sure to RP it out!
  • Keep in mind that your student is there to STUDY the humans! Frightening, grabbing, or maiming in any way will result in severe consequences to your character. Winter is always watching.
  • Once you have responded to the above, and your character is ready to move on, you may continue. Please note that the rest of this is in a CYOA format! Please don't read the other options, simply choose what is most IC for your character. You may also choose the setting of the town or the layout and type of house - have fun with this! Keep it PG-13.

You only have a short time in the Human World, and so you choose to make the best of it. It seems you have two choices in which to observe some humans: You can either stay and wander the streets, or you can go and visit a populated human home.

--> Stay OUTSIDE

You decide to go out and adventure on the streets of a regular Human city! You stay to the shadows as much as you can, but the glamour you were given with your temporary passport will allow you to walk among the Humans if you are brave enough.
  • Roll 4d10 in separate posts. If you get a repeat, you may choose to go up or down one number to ensure you have four different results!
    • 1: You spot a rather nervous-looking human tying knots into a handkerchief!
    • 2: You notice one of their pockets is a little lumpy - as you watch, you realize there is a lump of bread in there. How strange!
    • 3: There are a few humans looking at the sky tonight. In fact, they're doing their best to not look down!
    • 4: You come across a gaggle of humans, looking into a stream while holding lamps?
    • 5: Oh dear, someone spotted you! It was just a glimpse, but you see them freeze - and then they walk around you nine times (you counted!) really fast. You did your best not to move, just in case. Then they left, looking relieved.
    • 6: One human seems to have stopped breathing while they walked past a cemetery…
    • 7: A human walks past you, and it takes you a minute to realize what's strange about that: it seems their clothes are on backwards and inside out…plus, they're walking backwards.
    • 8: You find a ring of pebbles around what looks like an old bonfire. You nudge one with your foot.
    • 9: There's a human standing in the middle of a cross roads. They seem to be listening for something…so you decide to tell them about your life. They leave, muttering about how weird THEIR life was going to be.
    • 10: So many are dressed up! …Wait, are they dressed up? Do humans usually look like this?
  • Time sure flies when you're having fun, and before you know it, you're being called back to the portal. It's time to go home!
  • Once you have finished, you may continue below:

Choose one of the following options:
--> Write a Report
Humans are quite fascinating, aren't they? You've seen so many interesting things here that you've chosen to do the extra assignment! Once you are back in Halloween, you sit down and write out a report on what you've found.

The OOC

If you choose this route, you must:
  • Actually write out their findings, in your character's own words, using the form below.
  • Post their report in Professor Winter's Office!

If you complete these requirements, you receive:
  • +2 rp point for completion, as long as you went over 600 words.
  • +2 raffle tickets, which may be used here!*
xxx *- Please note, you can not claim the +2 tickets until you've posted your character's report in Winter's office thread!

--> Visit a HOME

Outside seems pretty standard - now what would be REALLY COOL is to actually go inside a Human Dwelling! See how they really live. Perhaps they are the incredibly primitive people you've always thought them to be! You eventually pick a house simply because there are a few of them in it.
  • Roll 4d10 in separate posts. If you get a repeat, you may choose to go up or down one number to ensure you have four different results!
    • 1: Some humans are putting out jack-o-lanterns both in and outside of their homes! They all seem to have candles in them.
    • 2: A cute little bat is trying to get into this human's house! You open the door and let it in.
    • 3: A regular black cat meows at you from a window sill.
    • 4: It seems people in costume are given free candy! You consider trying to get free candy, but you're a little too scared of getting in trouble to do it. Or perhaps you're just too lazy.
    • 5: It's really quiet in this house all of a sudden. You can hear the floorboards creak under your feet…
    • 6: You find a group of humans all around a bunch of candles. You decide to blow one out, but - now the humans are screaming?
    • 7: The human is talking about knocking on a wall - but hey, why not, right? So you knock three times. Three is a nice number. Except now the human is talking about 'knocks of death' …oops?
    • 8: There's a strangely lettered and numbered board that the humans are sitting around. You decide to move the little plug around on them, and spell out fun words.
    • 9: Someone tries to talk to you. They mention something about being born in Halloween…or was it on halloween? Either way, you panic and leave before the conversation gets too deep.
    • 10: You watch a human walk around their dwelling three times, backwards and counterclockwise. Then they knock on a nearby piece of wood.
  • Time sure flies when you're having fun, and before you know it, you're being called back to the portal. It's time to go home!
  • Once you have finished, you may continue below:

[CYOA START]

Lucretia hadn't considered that a class such as this would appear. It completely blindsided the reaper, but in a good way. A really good way. Learning about the human world was her number one passion and gosh darn it was princess pouty pants going to get going.

Normally studious and careful, Lucretia barely read the fine print of the documents, scratching down her signatures hastily as the temporary passport loomed in her mind. After all, this was the first time she would be able to attend the human land and on Halloween, no less. Nothing could make this bad. The premise, to study Human Superstition was absolutely fascinating.

And then, it was time. There, in the world of cute humans and weirdness, glamoured to be invisible. Lucretia felt, once more, blindsided by the newness. Practically giddy, the reaper decided to get down to work.

[HUMAN HOME? BORF?] - Roll 1/4 (#7)

While the human streets seemed interesting (and very weird), the human home seemed even more so (and even WEIRDER). Lucretia giggled and made way into one of the dwellings, carefully moving around furniture as to not bump anything out of place. Humans seemed to spook very easy, at least that was what her books all said.

One human was gently knocking on a wall, talking to another human. Lucretia paused and listened. Maybe she should knock on the wall too? How many times, though? Well, three was a decent number. The Reaper placed a hand to her jaw, rubbing it thoughtfully. Yes... What a good number, three. Reaching out she knocked on the wall three times. Beside her, the human jumped and whispered frantically to the second.

Knocks of... Death? Knocks of death? Wait, could you KILL a human with three knocks? Suddenly bewildered and surprised, she turned and decided to look in a new room. After all, she couldn't get charged for murder. That was definitely against some sort of passport law.

[HUMAN HOME] Roll 2/4 (#6)

A group of humans stood around some candles, laughing and chatting. It was surprising to Lucretia how similar they were to a Repear, of course they had no weapon to summon.. Such a shame, really. Considering how feeble they were, they really needed that extra defense too.

One of the girls standing near was being careless. Her sleeve danced right above the flickering flame. Nervously, Lucretia pushed nearer and blew out the candle. There, now no one would have to... Scream? Yes, they were screaming, giggling and screaming, but it was real fear too. Oh, oh dear. Another human death ritual?

It was time to leave the room.

[Human Home] Roll 3/4 (#8 )

Despite going around the house, it seemed the activities had settled... That meant going back to the gaggle of girls. When Lucretia stepped back into the room, they were seated at a table, a board with strange numbers and symbols all over it. Some of the candles were lit, and the lights were off.

One of the girls, not the one she had scared, was holding the triangular plug and whispering softly, "Dear spirit who is in the room. Please... Please tell us who you are."

Stiffening, Lucretia held her breath and looked around wild eyed. Did they know she was here? Well she did blow out the candle, but that could be anything and... Oh, they were laughing now. Something about how the girl was wrong. Sighing in relief, Lucretia realized it was some sort of weird Human game.

"Please Spirit!" The girl beseeched the board, her brow furrowed with beaded sweat, "Please show yourself!" Well... It wasn't like they'd really know, right? Stepping nearer, she gently touched the girls hand and moved the plug around to spell out the word H E L L O.

The girls squealed in excitement, and the one holding the planchet seemed proud, "See I told you!" She announced, clearly validated by the experience. Lucretia bit her lip and waited for the next question.

"Spirit, Who do I like the most?" Eh? Well... Lucretia followed the same process, moving it around to spell C A N D Y

"Oh my god, it's talking about Chriiiiiisss!" A squeal of laughter erupted and left Lucretia to ponder who Chriiiiisss was.... Perhaps a diety? Eh, or maybe just some person? Another odd human? At least they liked her answer.

"Okay, Spirit, Will I ever get married?" Asked the girl who had nearly burnt herself with the candle flame. Lucretia pursed her lip and spelled out the next answer: P R O B A B L Y N O T

"Whaaaat?!" Everyone burst into laughter and Lucretia found herself developing a headache. Eurgh... Enough with these giggling girls. Turning, she left the room. Though, that was fun. Another time, she'd have to mess with humans that way more often.

[Human Home] Roll 4/4 (#3 )

Booooring. Things were winding down and while it was all fascinating, Lucretia found that the humans here were not as fun as she had hoped. Walking towards the door, she was about to leave when she heard the soft meow of a cat. Oh, cats... Turning, she noticed the creature staring right at her, meowing a friendly hello while its tail flickered.

A human, coming to the cat's call, frowned at where Lucretia stood, "What is it? I don't see anything at all." Oh, it was an adorable creature. Lucretia wanted to take it with her, but knew better. Plus there was probably a ton of paperwork on taking a human animal to the Halloween world. Sighing, she knealt and petted its head, causing the cat to meow once more.

"Seriously, stop meowing!" Well, she didn't want to get the poor dear in trouble. Lucretia opened the front door and walked outside. Despite closing it, she could still hear the human screaming. God, they loved to scream.

CYOA START - Hayden

To say that she was excited was an understatement. She was overjoyed, ecstatic even. As soon as Hayden had heard about the class being offered she started to plan on what she would do in the Human World. There would be so much for her to see and take in, so much to learn. At first she was a little worried about not being able to bring Devoss on the trip, after all he didn't look "normal" like she did, but at finding they would be turned invisible and that she could bring him she once again became overjoyed. She should have known though, it wasn't like most of the students looked like humans. The two of them hurried to Winter's office and filled out the paperwork that was needed, or rather Hayden filled the paperwork out.

When the passport was handing to her Hayden envisioned what it would be like to get a real one. One that wasn't just for a little while. One that allowed them to go into the Human World whenever they wanted, and that would allow them to do more then just watch the humans. With a small shriek of excitement, and a dirty look from Devoss, the two of them were on their way to the human world.

OUTSIDE 1/4 - Hayden

There were so many things to see! For a little while Hayden just stood in the streets with wide eyes, watching the humans walk by. "Devoss isn't this amazing! Who would have thought we would be able to come her in our first year!"

She had already planned that staying outside was the best bet. There were so many people outside that she didn't want to bother with going inside and restricting what she saw.

There were many strange things going on, Humans were strange creatures, but one thing caught her eye more then the others. There was a nervous looking man tying knots in a handkerchief. She got as close to him as she dared, but couldn't understand what he was doing or why. She shrugged at Devoss and headed to find a more interesting human.

OUTSIDE 2/4 - Hayden

Hayden walked among the humans in amazement before another one of them caught her attention. At first she couldn't see what was wrong with the women but once she realized what it was she couldn't unsee it!

"Is she? Walking backwards?" Devoss asked.

"And her clothing is inside out!" Hayden gushed. She tried walking backward for a second and almost ran into a human. With a wide eye she moved back into a less crowded area. She wasn't sure what the reason behind that strange habit was, but it was more strange then the first one she saw. She would have to do a little more research when she got back home into the weird habits of humans.

OUTSIDE 3/4 - Hayden

Hayden was so confused with all the humans and their antics, so she decided to just explore the area a bit. It seemed to be pretty rural, or at least she assumed it was. There weren't many houses and there was forest all around the homes. This was a good place to scare humans, there would be so many things she could use to help her.

"Hey, what's this?" Devoss asked as he moved his head towards an old bonfire. It wasn't all that strange, but the ring of pebbles around it were.

"Maybe they are seats for little people?" Hayden suggested with a shrug. That was the closest explanation she had.

OUTSIDE 4/4 - Hayden

Her time was running out, Hayden knew it, and she really hadn't learned anything about the strange things Humans did on the day they celebrated Halloween. She headed towards the cemetery, where she imagined there wouldn't be many humans. However there were a few of them, and most of them seemed to be holding their breaths while walking past the cemetery.

"Oh! I can explain this one! They don't want the dead to take their body?!" she said excitedly to Devoss. He just shrugged.

[Pelagion: Start]

Pelagion's recently developed interest in the human world gnawed at him until he figured he had to do something about it, and the extracurricular class looked like just the thing. That his curiousity was enough for him to do extra unnecessary work like that was a big thing for him, one he was not taking lightly. So it was with intense seriousness that the young illusionist reaper signed the official form, and listened to the lecture, and accepted his passport. Pelagion didn't have to read the contract to know, vaguely, what was in it... and it wasn't an issue. He honestly did want to learn about these humans, and he wasn't going to screw up this prime chance to do so on Halloween. So, with an actually studious intent for once, he walked through the portal...

[Pelagion: Outside 1/4]

Pelagion walked around the human town he'd been dropped off in. It was sort of strange for the reaper not to be seen - normally, as an illusionist, that was the whole point - to be seen. But, after some time, he got used to it. Moreso, he got used to how strange the humans were. They looked like him, did Reaper-y things, but they were not his kind, and they didn't act... right. In fact, they were very different...

He stopped to stare at a few people very distinctly not looking down. He looked up, just to see what was going on, and found that there was nothing interesting up there (besides the very not-halloween sky). In fact, it was a cloudy, crappy, boring night. He crept closer to them, trying to figure out what the jack they were doing... but no luck, they didn't say a thing. He watched them for a moment more, and then gave up figuring this one out - maybe he'd ask someone later...

[Pelagion: Outside 2/4]

Pelagion moved on to a park around town. Apparently, the town had had a bonfire at some point, Pelagion observed, as he walked around a pile of charcoaled wood. The smokey smell made him sniff a little, and he noticed that, around the burnt out wood, there was a circle of small pebbles. "Huh." he said, kneeling to take a look. It wasn't a ring of firepit stones - these wouldn't keep any flames out - so it had to be some sort of superstition, right? Another one of these human things he was supposed to look for. Curious, he nudged a stone out of alignment... nothing.

Well of course, nothing. It wasn't supposed to mean anything. But... still... It seemed a little weird to leave the stone out of its circle... And yet, he didn't feel like putting it back.

Pelagion stood, brushing himself off. He stared at the stone, at the now marred circle, and the dead bonfire in the center. It was certainly intriguing - he'd figure it out one day.

He moved on...

[Pelagion: Outside 3/4]

As Pelagion made his way onto the streets again and walked among the crowds, his cloak swishing as he moved, he watched the people around him. They seemed so... Happy? Alive? It was hard to find the right word to describe them. Fragile, too - he remembered the human he had found in that city. He'd been fragile, too. Were they really so fragile, or was he mistaken? Did he really need to protect them, or would they be okay, did...

Wait, what the jack was that human doing?

Pelagion stared as a human, dressed in what appeared to be seam-side-out clothes, walked backward, their face scrunched up in concentration. He followed them, puzzled, until he remembered what one of his family had told him once... apparently, this was a special superstition of humans, where if they walked backward with their clothes inside out or something, they would meet a witch.

Pelagion almost snickered. Oh, he wished he could meet them and tell them that they really should wear their clothes the right way - they looked awful. He supposed that was one way to meet a witch, or a Reaper. He followed the human until, their expression sheepishly disappointed, they returned to their friends.

He smiled after them, a little fondly. Fragile or not, they were... kind of cute...
