Professor Thorsten Eckstein/// Former Keltainen at Durmstrang///
About the Professor:
Thorsten Eckstein was born in Germany and has recently come to live in Scotland with his daughter Cornelia. Attending Durmstrang Institute the once timid boy landed himself in Team Keltainen. After witnessing the murder of his mother and incarcerating his own father, Thorsten began to toughen up. As such students my find him to be intimidating if not a tad creepy. Although secretly quite nice outside of the classroom and professional setting, this German wizard has a deep interest in the afterlife and has since before his mother died. If you happen to have an interest in the dead then you might fight Thorsten to be right up your ally.
About the Class:
The class is taught in a classroom on the third floor that is decked out with preserved animals, you name it it's probably in the classroom. The subject itself teaches students about life after death. Everything from how to tell a ghost from a Poltergeist, to dealing with Ghouls and Inferi this class covers it. If you have an interest in ghosts and ghouls this is the class for you.

Please Note: Each student must attend a minimum of two lessons or face losing house points. Unless reason is given either in the absent thread or through private message. If reason is given it will count as if you were present for that class lesson.
Make Up Assignment(s): For anyone wishing to make up for missing a lesson or just want extra house points, feel free to write an essay on a topic you missed and submit it to my office before the end of the year. (A small paragraph will do.)
With an early morning, Thorsten wasn’t overly ecstatic. He had to leave Cornelia in the care of someone else not that the young girl complained. Though, it was only one morning better than the night class in his opinion. This class would be an easy one. As he didn’t plan on getting into any new material, it would be introductions followed by review. Not the most exciting class but for the rest of the year he knew it would be far more interesting.
Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, Thorsten hardly showed any expression as he looked to see theirs. He wondered how many of them questioned the stuffed corpses. Getting up and going to the front of his desk he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the rules and the subject topic on the board. “Good morning and welcome back to ghoul and ghost studies.” Thorsten greeted before continuing his introduction. “I am Professor Eckstein you’re new professor. You will follow these five rules when in my class. Be on time, prepared and ready. Pay attention, no wands, and be involved.” He informed them.
“Now, I would like names and houses from each of you. As for me I attended Durmstrang and am former Keltainen. That would be a mix of Hufflepuff and Ravenclaw here I believe.” Thorsten asked of them before adding. “While we do that let us do review, one topic each please.”

Yet another early Friday morning and Thorsten was preparing his second to last lesson of the week. Today he was going to dive right into the new material. Sitting at his desk as his students arrived, he hardly showed any expression as they took their seats. Getting up and going to the front of his desk, he leaned up against it before flicking his wand to the board revealing the subject topic on the board. “Good morning,” Thorsten greeted before getting into the topic. “Today we will be discussing the topic of Shades.” He informed them before the board wiped clean and a piece of chalk started writing the notes for the lesson. “I suggest taking notes down from the board.” He gestured before continuing on.
“Shades are not to be confused with ghosts. Though spirits, they are conjured by extremely rare magic. Appear more physically solid than a ghost, but less than a living body.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “Rumor is the resurrection stone is one of them." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. "Shades are recalled souls of the departed, with no permanent existence. That said once the spell responsible ends, they evidently disappear.” He finished before asking. “Now, any questions?”

“The waystation may very well be limbo. As mentioned back in first year it is place between life and death. It is possible to be the place where one decides to remain or go on. Its appearance differs to each person who visits and appears inside a person’s mind.” Thorsten told them as he walked around the room. “Being inside one’s mind makes it both real and unreal. Shades as discussed previous may appear to individuals in the waystation. These possible shades however appear more solid then ghosts, and able to be physically touched." He mentioned before continuing back up to the front of the room. “Now, any questions?” Thorsten asked as he leaned up against his desk.

Thorsten's early mornings had become a lot easier since Cornelia was sent to charms school. She'd never cared about being left with someone else however now she didn't have too. Mornings were certainly more lax for professor which was nice. This class would be an easy one. As he didn’t plan on getting into any new material, just review. Not the most exciting class but for the rest of the year he knew it would be far more interesting.

Selina arrived for the Ghost and Ghoul Studies class shortly after finishing breakfast down in the Great Hall. She liked the class, finding it interesting, and her teacher, whom she found to be engaging. "Good morning, Professor Eckstein," she said, with a slight smile. "How was your summer? Did you get to do anything interesting?"
Once class started, they got into reviewing what was studied in earlier classes. "We studied the defining characteristics of ghosts, Professor. As an aside, I had the chance to interview a certain late Auror during the OWL exam. He has managed thus far to keep an interesting perspective on the subject of his change of situation."

"Morning Miss Grey, my summer was good. Nothing interesting though. Thank you for asking." Thorsten answered with the smallest hint of a smile. "I trust your summer was good." He said before beginning into the lesson. Hearing Selina's review he nodded. "Every good, 10 points to Ravenclaw. Glad to hear you had good interview."

"I have a couple questions, professor," Selina said, after raising her hand. "If the story of the Deathly Hallows is to be believed, does not the use of the Resurrection Stone cause great anguish to the soul which is being brought back across to our side of the Veil? Also what about the manifestation of the Dark Lord which was witnessed in the Chamber of Secrets? Was it a Shade as well, or some sort of psychic projection? How was it that he was able to make himself appear as a much younger individual than he was known to be at the end of the First Wizarding War? Can a Shade do that?"

Thorsten nodded Selina would definitely be right. If in theory the Resurrection Stone was in deed true it would make sense that a soul that had moved on would in fact suffer. “To answer first part of question… Yes, a soul which has moved on would more likely suffer from pain and sorrow, as it would not belong.” He told her before thinking over the next part carefully. As far as Thorsten knew Shades couldn’t make themselves physical beings nor would they probably want too. “For last part, I have never heard of a shade that could. Being what they are, a shade returns to this world what they once were among the living.” He told her pausing for a moment to take a breath before going on.
“As for the events in the Chamber of Secrets… rumor is it was a Horcrux, piece of his soul that manifested a memory of his younger self. A Horcrux is known to feed off one’s emotions, their fears and doubts. The more one feeds into one – unintentionally – the more powerful it becomes. Thus object with piece of soul can become living being if it feeds off another.” He answered. He always did value Selina’s questions in class, she reminded Thorsten of him at her age. “Hope that helps, 20 points for your excellent questions.” He told her before dismissing class.
