Honorably discharged ex-Army ordnance officer who lost two of his limbs due to an accident that had nothing to do with the war he'd enlisted into, Lucas is typically viewed as having a cheery disposition and widely naive optimism despite his experiences. He turned his unfortunate circumstance of being a leg and arm out of functionality into a career to change the face of prosthetics, dedicating his time and knowledge of engineering into designing functional and attractive artificial limbs. He moved to Ashdown when his company decided to open a new office, choosing to commute rather than live in the chaos of the big city.
FAILURE IS AN OPTION
Lucas relies on his stubborn optimism to tell himself he's in this business to help others who have suffered in accidents or tragedy and most days, that's good enough.
The truth is, his foray into prosthetics was a self-inflicted punishment, to remind himself of his own failure as a soldier and human being for the rest of his life. He is a careful creature of habit and routine in his daily life to the point it wont allow him to try something new. He's so afraid of coming up short at a "normal" life that he'd rather not put himself out there and risk failure -- or success. He's unable to look beyond the obvious position or to expand his skills because what if he fails again? It's unthinkable. It's undoable. And so he exists in his bubble of patting himself on the back in service to others to mask his own insecurity and validate himself. That mentality has bred a side effect of martyrdom: he may not make a move to take a risk for himself, but he'd take a bullet for a random on the street without hesitation.
Spontaneity in his life, however, is beyond him. If a dinner date isn't planned more than a few hours in advance, he 'can't make it.' If someone shows up at his door unannounced, there's a 60% chance he just wont answer it. Weekend plans not made at least a week beforehand will delicately and regretfully be rejected. It makes being friends with him a matter of walking on eggshells at times, which means he's had plenty of people enter and leave his life in a series of Who Wants To Deal With This, Really?, and makes the idea of any personal relationship nearly impossible. His family has learned to quietly suffer his ways while he wades through his day as if each corner and turn is another opportunity to avoid.
ANYTHING ELSE?
- 32 (Aug 9th, '84), 6', Brazilian (dark skinned), collar bone length coal hair typically in a ponytail or half-tail, square jaw with well trimmed facial hair, million dollar smile, kind pale grey eyes. Favors minimal fashion in clothing, like tight plain tees and tank tops, jeans and boots. - Big family back west. Skypes them when he can. - Gym rat, wont let himself fall out of fighting shape. - He went to school on Army tuition to further his engineering knowledge, but after a handful of rejections for work after, he didn't pursue it. - Used to dance, loved to dance. - Lost his left leg (knee-down) and his right arm from his shoulder when on deployment: the humvee he'd been in hit a ditch and flipped. Wears a realistic leg prosthetic but an untreated arm one (example); he has a realistic arm one for 'special occasions' but mostly laughs about it being 'too designer' for him to be able to 'swap out limbs.' Also had a metal plate screwed in his jaw to set the broken bone but it's not noticeable unless he walks through a metal detector. - Polyglot. Speaks English, Brazilian Portuguese, Spanish, French and a smattering of Arabic. - Moved to Ashdown late 2015. - Has five ragged slash marks from his left hip to the right side of his shoulder from a were attack, mostly over his chest and a single, cleaner, thin scar opposite of them (almost like an X in how they cross). Also has a neat/clean scar on his good hand from being stabbed through.

Lucas has an impressive network of acquaintances and friends - and they always seem to have what he needs. Plumbing problems? He knows a guy. Need a place to crash for the night? A friend of a friend has an open couch he can use. Emergency small loan? His neighbor had a good tax return and has him covered.
pact TEAR
As part and parcel of a deal made with Sunny, Lucas can now see potential gaps between Ashdown and the otherworld. All he has to do to open them is reach out and tear them apart, which takes about as much effort as tearing a reasonably-sized magazine. Otherwise, this takes very little energy.
Side effect: Lucas can tell which side of the veil Sunny is on at any given time if he wants to.
Pack. He doesn't know Ashton, only that they're reserved, but their predicament has inspired Lucas to explore new avenues of dealing with their 'situation.'
Best friend, met in the Army and became fast companions. They're practically brothers; Deacon is always included in family gatherings and often visits Lucas' parents like he would his own.
Really nice guy. Not like, 'oh he's nice,' and you get on with your life -- no, he's like, one of those super duper genuinely awesome guys that make you have hope for humanity. Lucas hopes to see more of the generous cook.
Boyfriend; a fellow vet, good-hearted and charming beyond reason. The firefighter is his literal sunshine, playful and brilliant and everything he doesn't deserve.

TEN Something of import...maybe.
Rosalinde - can 'see' his leg prosthetic, intelligent, grows roses, can find OAD
Autumn - can understand animals, met Pax via a dream, calls Enemy "Gardener," had Otherbeings try to take someone's heart and burn her lungs out
Quote:
But I've been told there's powers that be that don't want us here. That just want us to live normal, boring lives. And that power is willing to do what it has to, to get us to fall in line.
Pax - OAD, magic tutor to Autumn, The Peaceful One
Zac - the one whose heart was almost taken, OAD is constant rainy/foggy version of here with fey who don't like being called fey but make bargains and deals, Owl Otherbeing not so bad, power is not being noticed, don't get a choice to go to OAD/it changes, was stuck there for 7 days, 'something' locked up there that's bad, it and Sunny are at odds, suggested to write out what's found and make a map, magic is larger there and smaller on scale here, Jer did something on the otherside and the scale of it was ???/different,
Jeremiah - Zac's Guardian, with Algernon, can see the portals to OAD,
Lady - 'join' her with the first meeting, promised a purpose and to see him through it, was also afraid and only one of her kind when the change first came over her, focus to change shape back, not in Ashdown, old magic coming back/no logic to it, only has to worry about biting while transformed and should only do on the other side, dusk where she is and has to wake up then (while early dark night), didn't have a phone (second meeting), has no sense of time, is Tatiana/Tatya Aleksy's twin, also says memories aren't real, he's done this 15 times before, can tear fabric of reality
Quote:
If you stay in the real world during the week of the full moon, you'll go mad with pain and probably hurt somebody, It won't hurt you to change. If you change here, it will be the worst pain you've ever felt
Jeremiah Mercer is probably a better bet. Finn Derouen could do it. So could Sunny Shore, if she felt inclined. You can text her, by the way, her phone number is literally just her name spelled alphanumerically
Quote:
He's a man who was so afraid to die that he tore down the world to stop it. Only now he's not a man any more. Now he's... All this." She waved to indicate Lucas's apartment, and probably his entire existence. "This place is so close to being his dream, Lucas. Everything with a place, and everything in its place."
"Of what he became," said Lady. "I once heard tell of a man/who split himself in two./The one part never changed at all/the other grew and grew./The prior part was always true/the growing part was always new."
She hesitated. "You have to get both parts of him. Or however many he's split into now. I know of three: the world, the man, and the girl. And if I knew how to destroy the world, I wouldn't be here, would I?"
"You choose the Enemy," said Lady, and her eyes were sad. "You choose order. And stagnation. You're afraid to grow, just like him."
Aleksy - saw him as a werewolf, magic in OAD doesn't make sense, has Sight for the marks (Autumn's hair, Finn's eyes, Thorne's tattoos), the longer you don't notice OAD the less likely it is to grab you (observed), tattoo w/ Lady, Lady not in Ashdown since children, Lady in Russia, Gardener = Enemy, if leave Ashdown in OAD you die, says memories aren't real and are a product of creatures like Pax, cats can lead to OAD, if things are weird walk away because OAD wants us dead,
Eve - got cell info from Lady, experiencing loss of color in sight, enhanced smell, knows there's 'others'
Something was coming to hurt him in OAD - so sayeth Lady. Pax saved him, used herbs, The Enemy is in his [L] nature,
Quote:
The Enemy creates
the cycles.
The moons circle
'round the planet
and he changes
as they
command
Pax seems agitated, wintergreen eyes moving much more jerkily than on Autumn's first visit.
He will be free
when the Enemy
is free
He is no agent
He is no monster
I meant only that
The salve
It hurts him
No idea what happened to the cat-were - Lucas doesn't even know he exists.
Sunny - 2,992yo, someone put them there on purpose to split them up, they beat it last time, Pride Peace & Sorrow, Lady is a child (they want her to be but she can't be), supposedly born from all the magic in the world, might need it to survive, doesn't know where magic came from, strange guy claiming to be father (Sunny says he's human possibly Other-touched) but she's scared and says it feels like a bad omen, she is the universal constant,
Quote:
"Moonwalkers, shapeshifters, whatever, are half of a very old talent. It used to be that anyone who had the power could change their shape, which I guess is probably where the mythology comes from. That changed after the first time the Enemy was locked away, because… before that, there were no rules. The magic came to you as it came to you and you could do almost anything." She sighed. "Anything except bring back the dead, which was… its own problem. But I'm getting off topic, so. Moonwalkers.
"When the very first moonwalkers realized what happened to them during the full moons, they knew they couldn't just let that be. People got hurt. They died. Worse, people got changed, and it spread like a disease. People were afraid of that change, and to defend their own lives, the moonwalkers became… something of a police force. Protectors." She looked away from the water, a ghost of a smile on her face. "Your job, as best I understand it, is to keep the otherworld from encroaching on this world. The real one. To limit the effects that people who aren't ready can feel."
