The first time Kaleb noticed the pale cat, it had been near the park. He was half way through the intro biology textbook that was supposed to last all semester, and when he looked up it was grooming itself several metres away. Kaleb watched it with a smile as it slipped away into the shaded bushes, and went back to his book.
The second time was on his way home from classes, just a glimpse of it at a distance with something pink on it's head, or had that been a collar?
It wasn't until he caught sight of the creature for a third time that he began to really wonder. It looked healthy enough, always wandering with the air of a comfortable, confident creature who had a place to go home to at the end of the day. But it had flowers on it's head, that delicate pink colour he had seen a day or two earlier. Flowers. He watched it casually cross a lawn, sit down to watch a bird with it's tail flicking predatorily, and then move along. There were definitely flowers on it's head. And even more bizarre, it had left flowers on the lawn too. Not from it's head, nothing had fallen off while Kaleb had been watching.
The mystery was too strong, and Kaleb could not think of any scientifically explained reasons for a flower-adorned cat that apparently sprouted flowers where it sat. His errands could wait, this cat had him perplexed in a way not even advanced mathematics could manage. Subtly altering his own direction, he made to follow the creature as it strolled down the street.

If Kaleb was aware of the unusual nature of Ashdown he might have recognized the head shake as intelligent communication, instead he could only assume it was an amusing coincidence. Cats were very clever to begin with, but he had never met one clever enough to carry on a conversation.
"I've seen you around town before, you must know all sorts of quiet places to sit and read," he said idly. He still didn't approach, for as welcoming as the small animal was, it was still an unfamiliar animal. His posture and tone was relaxed though, indicating that his distance was out of respect rather than fear.
There was a subtle motion at the foot of the bench, and Kaleb's smile faltered, flickering with confusion as he realized something very unusual was happening in front of him.
