Leon entered the room, eyes already looking to see if he could spot Nike around. It wasn't like he was late, he might actually be early, but he didn't want to stick around longer than he had to. Besides, it wasn't like he had anything to do that day other than meet her, so he wasn't really doing anything. He just didn't like being around people, if his insistence on finding a cabin to himself for years on the train hadn't proved it by now. Besides, he had a lot to think about, like how much NEWTs were going to suck and how for whatever reason Brandon of all people made quidditch captain. For someone that argued with Leon more often than not, he seemed to be pretty intent on asking Leon about how to actually run a team. Leon would have told him to bugger off many times, but the fact was he kind of understood the position Michael's cousin seemed to be in considering that he had Tristan dump the Slytherin team on him and then had the gall to moan about something that Leon couldn't give a rat's arse about.
Leon found a seat after not seeing Nike around and proceeded to take a seat, frowning heavily at some Asian kid that came over to take his order. He was tempted to order something alcoholic just because he could now that he was technically an adult, but refrained since he really didn't want to become an alcoholic like his mum and dad were. He wasn't an idiot. He knew that his parents were, and if the worst vice he could get out of them was the fact that he smoked, all the better. Instead he ended up ordering a butterbeer and sipped it gingerly, knowing that Nike was going to be there soon and he didn't want to seem like he had to drink to be around her. Leave that kind of shite for Jer or his parents. Why he had to make himself look better for Nike was confusing to him, but he refused to think on that thought for long. Besides, it wasn't like he had to act better than he was. Nike had already seen him at his worst. What would he accomplish by putting on airs?

Nike was here on time, and to her grandmother's standards that considered "late" because "Early is on time, on-time is late." Ever since Grandpa Timothy died last Spring, things had gotten a bit tense. She was fairly aware that Avian and dad had been fighting last time over the fact that Avian had to attend as well just to "keep the image." Of course that didn't end well, given their dad's face when he went home. On the other hand, she felt a tinge of satisfaction when a letter informed her that she's assigned as Head Girl. Well, at least that would keep her dad from ever trying to be too uptight over her just because, according to mum, "he was pissed because she turned out to be "better" than Avian" which was... very uncalled for- openly saying like that to Avian was something Nike didn't approve of. She wasn't sure to be honest, but she just knew that dad always relied on grandpa's opinions to get the job done, probably because he wanted to be seen as a "worthy patriarch" and not a "spare who only got heir because the older screwed up" or whatever.
Seeing Leon ahead and walking up towards him, Nike felt a bit awkward over how... contrasting their fashion tastes were. She was never going to judge him, ever, but still! Besides, it wasn't like Leon cared about it, either- because he's Leon as usual."You look cheerful today," Nike dryly told him, except she wanted to make it clear that she's just joking. "I'm just joking. But honestly, I'm a little bit surprised that you've agreed to this, if I'm allowed the be frank. "

spaceColin supposed that, when you wanted alone time, going to the most popular establishment Hogsmeade Village had to offer might seem to be an odd choice. It wasn't really that he wanted to be alone though, he just couldn't quite put a name to what he wanted. He obviously wasn't avoiding interaction, since he would have to interact with whoever served him while he was there. He wasn't avoiding noise, considering how crowded the pub was. Honestly, he didn't know what he was avoiding, if anything. He just knew that, at this moment, he wanted to be mostly alone, but not actually alone. Because that made perfect sense, he thought wryly.
spaceHe was a creature of habit, so when he sat down, he didn't even bother to look at the menu; it couldn't have change too drastically, even with new owners, he figured. What kind of pub wouldn't have fish and chips, right? So, instead he took out his nearly-completed project, a clockwork owl he'd taken to calling Alfie, and began fiddling with the mechanism. After a moment, he also took out the small toolkit he was carrying with him, grabbing a small screwdriver out of it to tighten some things up. He was having a rather nice time trying to figure out how to combine magic and mechanical elements to make it work how he wanted it to. Being able to actually use magic over the Summer holiday had been great, because it meant he had swaths of time, completely uninterrupted, to work on it. His mum was a little cross with him still over all the late nights and missed meals, but he almost had it, dammit! The charmwork was right, but something about the left wing was off and making it fly lopsided. He just needed to figure out what needed adjusting, and it'd be perfect! Then he could build another one, and give it to Mr. Abrams. He was willing to bet the man would be thrilled.

Shinobu figured that it just had to be his luck that he was stuck on waitstaff duty while his aunt and uncle ran the bar and kitchen on his days off from school. Not that the teen minded, really, but that meant having to interact with the oddest people he'd ever met, and that included his brother in that mix. He wasn't sure half the time if it was rude to stare so openly at the various outfits that magical people had or if it was rude to ask about the conversion rate between galleons, sickles, and knuts (yes, he knew that it was twenty-nine knuts to a sickle and seventeen sickles to a galleon but it just made no sense). He'd already inadvertently insulted a couple of older women by asking why they were steaming from their ears, and then proceeded to nearly have a heart attack when the herbologist down the road had brought in a potted grass or something that had grabbed his arm when he tried to serve him his drink. He hadn't gone near the man for the rest of the afternoon, and instead asked his aunt to deal with that order. Nevertheless, he guessed it was an okay situation he was in, and he could imagine worse fates than being bodily thrown out of his comfort zone of fifteen years.
Nevertheless, he was working on bussing one of the tables after the group previously seated had left (three butterbeers and a plate of scones) when one of the new individuals seated caught his eye. He could blame it on the fact that never did he ever see someone working on something that looked very much mechanical in the restaurant before, and he'd be right in doing so, but the particular individual in question had told him what those terrifying creatures were that he'd seen at the station when he dropped Akira off to go to school. As a result, he quickly finished up cleaning the table before washing his hands to go take the new person's order. He had been slightly disappointed that his brother wouldn't be seen anywhere in the village during what the school called 'Hogsmeade weekends' but that didn't mean that there weren't numerous students coming down from the school to spend the day in town.
Checking to make sure that his pad and paper were ready, Shinobu approached the other teen and he tried on what he knew had to be his best customer service smile to greet the teen. "Hello, welcome to The Three Broomsticks. Would you like something to drink to start, or are you waiting for someone?" Mentally he was already cataloguing the mechanical owl, and if Shinobu didn't know any better, it looked like something out of steampunk or clockwork. In any case, he kind of hoped that no one else came in since that meant that he'd probably be too busy to actually question the other teen on the mechanics behind his work, and possibly pick up a few pointers on some of his designs that he was fretting over.

spaceColin thought the voice sounded familiar before he looked up, though he couldn't place it. It wasn't a strong sense, quite the opposite, but he was sure he'd heard the person's voice recently. Of course, as soon as he met the young man's eyes, he realized why; he was the guy from the station, the one that'd been so freaked out by the thestrals. Colin blinked; well, this was a bit... odd. He was still not entirely sure on how the guy'd been at the station, since he was apparently a muggle, and now he was here... working? He didn't think Hogsmeade shops could hire muggles. Muggles weren't even supposed to be in Hogsmeade, actually. He frowned slightly, taking a long moment to realize he'd been asked a question. "Huh? Oh! Oh, uh, no, not waiting on anyone. Um... Pomegranate juice, please. Uh, but, I'm ready to order, actually."
spaceHe didn't think the other guy recognized him. Which was sort of a pity, because he would've liked to ask some questions to explain the oddness of the situation, but he could hardly do that if he'd already been forgotten. It'd be odd. Colin fought the urge to sigh; trouble of not being particularly memorable, he supposed. He'd also infodumped the guy on the thestrals, and then forgotten to get his name, so there was that. You'd think having a metal arm would make a guy stand out a bit more, though.
spaceHe glanced back at his owl, blushing slightly. It wasn't like it was any of his business to go poking around in the stranger's personal life, anyway. Just because he was confused and curious didn't mean he had a right to ask questions like that. "Uh, I'll just have the fish and chips, please," he said, then glanced back down at the owl. Something about the mechanism for the wing had to be out of place. Not too much, since it was working more or less fine, it was just not keeping time with the other wing properly. Plus, it's motion was somewhat limited. Figured that he'd managed to build a bird with a buggered up wing, he thought. Chewing his lip, he slid his goggles down over his nose, adjusting the magnification to see if he could get a better look. He thought he was being a little rude, but better to be rude by acting like a customer more concerned with his own life than to be rude by asking invasive questions. If he was going to hyperfixate, he needed to be specific about what he was fixating on so he didn't make an arse of himself.

Shinobu nodded at the teen, jotting down the order as he said it, and quirked an eyebrow up as he mentioned that he wasn't waiting on anyone. Huh, well that was odd. He could have sworn that the guy had another person with him, and they seemed to be pretty close. Then again, he could have wanted some alone time, which Shinobu could understand. He was just glad that he could stay after school during the week so that he could tackle his schoolwork that he couldn't tackle without computers, and his laptop was currently tucked away upstairs and hopefully far enough away that it wouldn't be affected by the very magical customers. Nevertheless, he really did like the time spent away from the inn because at least he wasn't in weird central and he was the only, well, nonmagical person around for miles. He gave the other a smile and nodded toward the pad. "One fish and chips, and one pomegranate juice. I'll be right back with your drink."
He left and returned shortly after giving the order to his uncle, drink in hand as he glanced around the dining area. No, there weren't any customers that needed his attention, so he sat the drink down and figured he might as well be a little sociable. He was still extremely curious about the owl, after all. Except for his brother, he'd never seen a wizard that had an interest in anything mechanical. "There's your pomegranate juice. Um, this might sound a little odd, but that's a clockwork owl, isn't it? Do you work on things like this all the time?"
And there he was being rude again. He flushed, rubbing the back of his neck as he shifted a bit awkwardly. Nice going, Shinobu. "Not that there's anything wrong with working on something mechanical. I mean, I've got some projects of my own that I've been working on, but I don't usually see wizards working on things like this. I think my brother's the only one I've ever met." He frowned though, looking over the owl with an expert eye. Was it his imagination, or was one of the gears out of alignment? He wasn't entirely sure, since the mechanism was hidden slightly by the wing, but he could swear that it was off a few centimetres. Maybe. He didn't have the thing laid out for him to look at carefully, after all. "Is one of your gears out of alignment? It looks kind of, well, off a bit."

spaceColin thanked the other boy as he walked away, then went back to working on his owl. He was really hoping to fix whatever was wrong without having to take the thing apart again. Ideally, whatever needed fixing could be accomplished with a spell, or a screwdriver. But first, he had to figure out the issue. Something might be too tight, or perhaps part of the mechanism wasn't sized correctly? He'd thought that everything was right, swore he'd double and tripled checked, but he'd also pulled a lot of late nights. Easy to mess up a measurement when you were sleep deprived. Sighing, he pulled the wing out manually, testing the motion; it resisted somewhat, which was what he'd suspected would happen. Maybe he should've asked his mum to look at it. She would probably know what was wrong right away. Of course, it could just be that something was out of place. Fiddling with it as much as he had, he could've easily messed one thing up while fixing another.
spaceHe wasn't expecting his drink order to be out so quickly; the return of the Asian guy made him jump slightly. He blushed, setting Alfie down on the table; he'd nearly thrown the thing. That would've been great. "Sorry I hit you in the head with a mechanical owl, ma'am." Flustered as he was, there was once again a delay in answering the question he'd been asked. "Uh, yeah. His name's Alfie, or, uh, that's what I call him." The question on whether or not he worked on stuff like this often was a hard one, not because there wasn't an answer. More like, he didn't want to let it get him hyperfocused on talking about his projects and start infodumping the poor guy. No one wanted to listen to that, except maybe Di and Caty.
spaceThe other boy's awkwardness wasn't lost on him, however, which made him feel a little better about his own. When it was brought up that he hadn't seen any wizards working on things like this, Colin relaxed a little, and chuckled. "I don't think many people carry this sort of thing around with them in public, to be fair," he pointed out. "But, uh, yeah, this is sort of... um, it's kind of my thing? The clockwork stuff. My mum's a robotics engineer, so I picked it up from her. She, uh, she's not magic. I'm muggleborn."
spaceHe blinked when the guy said something looked off, and looked at the owl again. "Where?" he asked, curious. Setting Alfie down, he spread the wings, noticing once again that the left seemed to be protesting. It took him a moment to notice; it wasn't the wing itself, it was a mechanism in the body under the wing; he'd been looking at the wrong thing. Figured. "Bloody hell, I'm blind," he muttered, and sighed. He'd been hoping to avoid taking it apart. "This is what I get for putting the thing together on three hours of sleep after two missed meals," he said with a self-deprecating laugh.
spaceAfter a moment, he looked back up at the server, smiling faintly. "How'd you even notice that?" he asked, surprised. It was a pretty easy to miss detail; he'd missed it because he was looking too hard at the wrong thing, but most people wouldn't have even known where to start looking period. And the alignment error was almost invisible. Not to mention that the gear was mostly hidden when the owl wasn't spread out, and still partially hidden when it was. "Uh, I'm Colin, by the way." He figured he owed the guy something, for helping him out. His name was a good start. This could've been considered payback for the station, but he was still pretty sure the guy didn't remember him, so he wasn't sure it counted.

Shinobu apparently had flustered the boy, and he hadn't quite expected for the other to take a while to answer. When he did, Shinobu took another look at the owl in front of him, still considering the mechanics behind it as he listened to the other teen. He then answered Shinobu's question about why he was working on it, which Shinobu had to admit made a lot of sense. Honestly it would have been more perplexing if he had been like Akira and just ignored the nonmagical world after finding out he was magical. "Well, that makes sense. What kind of robotics does she work with, if you don't mind me asking. There's a wide field of them, and well, I might be curious about it."
He however blinked as the guy asked where the problem was, and then chastised himself for not noticing it earlier. Honestly, Shinobu wouldn't have blamed him for not noticing. He probably would have missed it too, if he had been working on it himself and evaluating it from other angles. As it was, he shrugged and inclined his head toward the owl itself. "To be honest, it was hidden behind some things, and it just didn't look quite like the other mechanism on the other side, so I assumed that one was out of alignment. If it wasn't for that, I would have missed it as well"
Then the teen asked him how he noticed it, which made Shinobu recall that most people referred to him as a nerd because of his hobbies and potential future career. Not the least of which was Akira when he was being particularly bratty. "I, um, my school has a robotics program that I'm enrolled in. I've also been studying it since I was in middle school, and building mechanical toys since I was a kid. It's a shared hobby since me and my brother are both into it, though his usually are more for the cool factor. So I learned how to notice that sort of thing when I was working on one of my projects a year or so ago." He gave a lopsided smile, shrugging, and then nearly facepalmed as soon as he realized he hadn't introduced himself as a server. Go figure, he was more interested in the mechanical device in front of him than in the proper way he should be serving customers. "Oh, right. I forgot to introduce myself. Shinobu. I should have said that when I was taking your order. Though I kind of recognized you from when I dropped my brother off at the station at the beginning of the school year. spaceColin smiled faintly when asked about his mother's job, and held his arm aloft, rolling his sleeve up as he did so. "Robotic prosthetics. This isn't hers, obviously, it wouldn't work here if it was. This is enchanted, like Alfie. But, I've got a robotic arm too, that she made me. Can't wear this one out and about in London, might get questions. She designed and built it herself." He paused, and chuckled slightly. "Guess I got lucky, waiting list for the kind of tech I've got is pretty long. But she's my mum so I got mine as soon as she was done with it." He kind of wished he had a photo of the arm his mum had made him, so he could show it off. But, he had never thought to take one, except with his mobile, which he obviously didn't have on him, for the same reason he was wearing his magical arm and not the robotic one. Maybe he could get her to mail him one? He supposed it might seem odd, that he was considering requesting a photo sent to show to some random guy. But he didn't usually encounter people who were at all interested in robotics, not while at school, anyway.
spaceThe blonde snorted faintly, feeling rather like he was being placated for an obvious mistake. The other boy's reply regarding the alignment error smacked of insincere 'anyone could've made that mistake'... Or maybe Colin was just reading into it because he felt sort of dumb for not noticing it. "You said you weren't magic, so does that mean you're a mutant? Super vision?" he joked. Of course, his laughter petered off when he realized he might've sounded rude. Ugh, why did he ever try to be funny? He really wasn't. Not intentionally, anyway. Why did people even talk to him?
spaceColin felt slightly better when he said he was involved in a robotics program, because if nothing else, at least the guy wasn't some rando who just happened to notice something that'd been right under his nose. The fact that he'd seen it was still impressive, but presumably he was somewhat trained in details like that. "I got it from my mum, which I guess you could've figured out," he replied with a small smirk. "My dad thinks we're crazy- he's a literature professor. Classics. Mum says if not for Jules Verne and Mary Shelley they'd have nothing to talk to each other about."
spaceIt was nice to finally get a name for the face, but Colin couldn't help but pale slightly when Shinobu said he recognized him after all. Of course, he didn't seem to be acting weird or anything, so maybe the Ravenclaw's fears that there'd be some weird negative mental association were unfounded? Though, if he did remember him... was it rude to ask questions? Augh. "I wasn't sure you recognized me," he confessed sheepishly. "But, uh... I didn't really get to ask, considering... Well, you were kinda... um, with the thestrals, you know. And I had to go. But, I wanted to... You don't have to answer, I'm just... muggles aren't really... Hogsmeade's supposedly the only all-magical village in the whole country. So, I just, I was wondering, um..." God, he should've kept his mouth shut. But, he was in too deep now. "How are you here? Or why? Or both? I didn't think there were even any muggles around here, or that they could get here. Much less work in the local pub." He blushed, wishing he'd never asked. It was beyond nosy. His father would have his head for being so invasive. Of course... well, he'd always taken more after his mum, and she'd likely be asking the same questions. Which didn't exactly mean it was more acceptable. Just that it made sense.

Shinobu nodded as Colin explained his mum's work, thinking that it made sense. Though how Colin ended up with a prosthetic to begin with was beyond him. He didn't want to ask, though, considering that he figured that was rude, insensitive, and altogether too personal of a question to ask. The waiting list did sound pretty accurate. There was always one with regards to that sort of thing, and he was half-tempted to examine the boy's prosthetic further until he reminded himself that Colin had said it was partially magical. Shinobu would never be able to replicate that in a million years. "It sounds like it. I mean, I'm pretty sure that prosthetics have a waiting list as is, add in a mechanical aspect like that and you'd definitely be looking at a highly-specialized piece of equipment that people would really want."
Shinobu almost laughed at the assumption that he had some sort of super power. Akira would think it was wicked, but Shinobu knew better. It'd probably be a pain to work with, even if it could come in handy. After all, he didn't think the human brain could deal with the enhanced sense that well, but he could be wrong. The brain was certainly plastic enough to make new connections to cope with changes to a person, but there was the element that the plasticity could only go so far. He only had to look at brain damage and the way it affected people to show how much that wasn't always the case. "No super powers. It might be useful to have, but I'm just too mundane for that, I suppose. There's probably some kind of magic or something that bypasses normal human perception or something though, which means I'll never get it." He nodded at Colin's description of how he got into the hobby though, figuring that might have been the case. "So definitely into steampunk then. That makes for an interesting style, I'll admit. Not sure it's mine, but I'm more into sleek lines and soft edges myself so..."
Shinobu recalled the incident at the platform all right, as well as the ghastly horse-like creatures there. He nodded along with Colin's statement about recognition, and winced when he mentioned the thestrals. He'd have to ask Akira if there was a way he could send some of the books at the school his way. If nothing else, he had to study some of it to even pass that wombat test they were going to make him take to even live in Hogsmeade. Which, of course was the one thing Colin was curious about. "It's, well, a long story. Well, maybe. My mum and dad weren't magical, but my aunt, uncle, and brother are. My parents passed away a bit ago, and Clay and Denise took us in. They decided to buy The Three Broomsticks and we moved in." He he then rolled his eyes as he recalled the series of tests he was going to have to take. "Only, I guess the wizarding officials found out I wasn't magical and decided to give me an ultimatum to either take those wombat tests to prove I could live here or they erase my memories and send me elsewhere. Not exactly sure where they'd send me, so now I'm studying up as much as I can on magic and stuff to be able to pass them."

spaceColin blushed slightly, nodding in agreement. "I felt sort of guilty at first," he admitted, looking more than a little sheepish. "People scrimp and save and wait for ages to get their hands on this sort of thing, you know? But Mum pointed out that I was basically her guinea pig. She's been trying to fix bugs here and there in a new design she and a few partners came up with. They're trying to make robotic prosthetics more accessible to general public, but have been hitting some snags. My arm isn't even a final product, it's still a prototype." A pretty good one, if he were honest. But it still wasn't quite up to the standard his mum wanted to get it at, so he imagined he'd have a new one waiting for him once he got home for the holiday. They had been experimenting with different materials to offset costs, but thus far nothing that hit the price they liked worked as efficiently as they needed it to. Maybe the next one he got to try out would be better.
spaceThe Ravenclaw wondered if Shinobu meant mundane as an insult towards himself, or a neutral statement. He didn't seem too bothered by it, but then, Colin was well aware of how easy it was to cover up insecurities with self-deprecating statements. He shrugged slightly. "Bypassing in a way that'd make them notice what you just did, I don't think so? I guess some halfbreeds might have heightened senses for that sort of thing, but normally that stuff is usually hearing or smell-related, as far as I know... Maybe goblins? I figure they might have some sort of enhanced eyesight." Truthfully, Colin knew next to nothing about more humanoid magical creatures. The lessons at school focused very strongly on the ones closer to animals, beasts as opposed to beings. And he'd always been more interested in those, anyway, for the sake of his hobby.
spaceHe laughed slightly at the steampunk comment. "I'm basically what happens when you get a modernist and marry her to a traditionalist, aesthetic-wise," he said. "My house is kinda weird. Dad's stuff is all oak furniture and thick old books, dark colors and all that. Meanwhile if Mum had her way it'd be all chrome all the time. She still says that my sense of style is too close to my dad's for her liking. One time she told me that if not for my robotics interest and clockwork obsession, she'd think I was a changling or something." Not for the first time, Colin had to wonder about his biological mother. Was she more like his dad? Maybe it was genetic. Maybe he favored the classic side of things because that's where his blood was. It sounded stupid, but he didn't have any other explanation. He gestured vaguely around the restaurant. "After I found out I was magic, I figured it was for the best that I took after my Dad, though. Fit right in with this crowd half the time." Sometimes he was happy about that... other times not so much. He'd gotten used to being weird, after all. He wasn't exactly weird in the wizarding world. It still caught him off-guard sometimes.
spaceColin regretted asking as soon as he said his parents were dead. That had to be recent, didn't it? Of course, once again he didn't seem particularly affected by it. But that could be an act. You never knew. The Ravenclaw frowned slightly at the mention of tests. "That's... awful," he said, obviously disturbed by the notion. "But, um, I guess if you needed help with it... Though I suppose your aunt and uncle are already on that." Why had he started to offer to help? That was stupid, the guy probably already had plenty of help from his family. Truthfully, he was just interested in having someone to talk about robotics with. Caty and Di he could talk about his clockwork creatures and all that, but they didn't know much about muggle technology, not compared to him, anyway. Having someone he could actually sit and get into the meat of the subject with would be amazing, he hadn't had that in... well, ever, really. Except his mum, but that was less talking about robotics and more listening to her give mini-lectures on her current projects and whatever recent developments had been made. The idea of Shinobu being sent off just because he'd failed some test, on a subject he'd only recently even known existed, was horrifying as well. Colin hoped for his sake that he took tests well, if nothing else. Being separated from his brother after losing his parents would probably be the worst thing that could happen to him. Or, so the Ravenclaw assumed. He didn't really understand sibling stuff, not having any of his own. But all his friends had them, and even the ones who didn't get along with their siblings usually had some sort of loyalty to them. The only real exception he could think of was Leon with Jer, and even then Colin was pretty sure there was a limit to how much you could say about the man before Leon would go off. He didn't like Jer, but Jer was still his brother, after all.

Eli had to admit, life hadn't been that bad since he graduated school. He'd gotten a job where his outlandish tales weren't actually considered crazy, and well, people outside of the magical world might consider him a bit off his rocker, but that hadn't changed much since his childhood. If nothing else, his old friends when he was a kid thought he was mixed up in conspiracy theories and some sort of cult, and he was expecting some sort of intervention soon as a result, but that didn't bother him that much. Maybe they would send him to a Catholic priest for a good old-fashioned exorcism. Vaguely he wondered if the priest would think he was some sort of Satan-worshipper and try and turn him from the dark side, but that was probably only in films. Maybe. He definitely had to ask someone sometime.
In any case, he was seated at the Three Broomsticks, waiting for Jean to show up. The two had decided just to have a guy's day out or something, and while they could have done that at home, it was much different when they could get out and have a couple of drinks and talk about whatever crossed their minds. Now, if only their friends could join them, but ever since Eli's fight with Cathy back in school, they didn't quite run in the same circles anymore. Eli was more likely to hang out with Morven, Camila, and Axel than he was to hang around Dani and Cathy, and considering that Jean had broken up with Cathy recently, the likelihood of seeing Cathy anywhere was slim to none. Not that Eli was going to complain. He'd actually been pretty good about not saying anything bad about Cathy around Jean, and the fact that she and Eli hadn't seen eye to eye since fifth year wouldn't have surprised him if it turned out it contributed to the breakup.
There was at least one good thing that came from the last few years, at least in Eli's mind. He no longer blamed himself for Cathy's mum's death, and no longer was scared of the idea of walking around alone or living alone if he wanted to. He read the papers, and reading about the death of the man that had plagued Eli's nightmares was certainly something that Eli didn't mind at all. Call him callous, but most people didn't get beaten with a crowbar and threatened to have their tongues removed by a madman. Besides, it wasn't like he didn't feel bad about those events. He'd heard the psycho had gone on a murdering spree, and Eli was pretty glad that he wasn't anywhere near the events going down. If he had to feel sorry about anything, he felt sorry about the victims of the arse. They certainly didn't deserve anything of what that man did.
Sighing, he glanced up as a server gave him his drink, glad that he wasn't expected to be at work the next day. That meant that he and Jean had a chance to actually do something, and Eli had a pretty good idea of how they could hang out. They could always go down to the duelling range and broadcast just how bad at duelling Eli really was, or well, whatever. Hell, if they really wanted, they could just go and catch a movie somewhere in a muggle theatre, or well, something. Either that, or Eli could try and pry out of Jean the identity of whoever it was that Jean met a bit ago. If Jean was starting to move on from Cathy, that was good, because he needed to. Eli knew from experience that hanging around that much of a toxic person wasn't healthy, and Cathy was nothing if not a toxic person in Eli's mind.
