The blood paint stallion ambled slowly through the fall colored forest. All around him, green leaves were changing to yellow, brown, and red. Here and there dotted a green evergreen tree. The air was cold, cool, and crisp. It was a time to be thankful, yet there was a hint of sadness around the graveyard. Not for the obvious reasons either.
Veslorurn glanced at his blue mate walking slowly beside him. Their friend's baskets had finally grown to adults. Charn had enjoyed raising the young foals so much and now she longed for baskets of their own. They'd been trying but with no luck yet. He'd remembered when he'd gone to the Wishing Star alone a couple years ago and wished for a friend or mate who wouldn't shy away from him because of his pelt colors. A short while later, Charnette had entered his life.
So when he had seen how much she desired foals of her own, he'd suggested going before the Wishing Star again. She'd leaped upon the idea and they'd made their offering. So far nothing unusual had happened. "Cheer up love. We'll get there some day."
Charnette had been walking with her head hanging slow. All the usual spunk driven out of her. She'd been longing after baskets of her own to raise ever since she'd help Kinak and Nash raise their trio. Now all but one had left. She found it ironic that it was the purewalk who'd chosen to stay; particularly with Veslo's aversion to them. Veslo had been proven right about purewalkers. The filly had been a right little hellion before they'd managed to charm her.
The blue mare sighed deeply, not really able to enjoy the view around her. Her mate had suggested a quiet walk to cheer her up, and she'd gone along to humor him. He was such a caring stallion. He deserved foals of his own! She had done her best to see that they got some, but no baskets yet graced their home. Charn had found she'd been so happy helping to raise their friend's foals. She wanted that happiness for herself and her mate.
She looked up as he spoke and offered him a small smile, leaning into him. "I know."

Veslo tried to understand how hard this was for his mate. He didn't have quite the drive she did, but he also wanted her to be happy. If having baskets would make her happy then he was more than willing to try. "Someday I promise you baskets of our own," he said as he rubbed his cheek against hers. Someday was the best he could do. How could he know when it would come true? He only hoped it wasn't too much longer.
"Come and enjoy the colors Charn. The leaves are falling." He pranced through the wind blown leaves, kicking up the ones that had fallen into piles on the ground. Veslo did his best to make a fool of himself to lighten his mate's mood. With her Unicorn and Kalona blood, he'd learn it was easy for her to swing one way or the other when it came to her moods. Most of the time she was cheerful and mischievous. When something got her down though, it could take a lot to pull her back.
Charn couldn't help the urges she felt for little baskets and foals all her own. Ever since she'd helped with Kinak's and Nash's foals, she'd realized something had been missing in her life. It wasn't until then that she'd realized she had never been around younglings before. She had been surprised by the depths of her own feelings. Usually so irresponsible, the mare found she liked kids. They were great to play games with too.
Her mate started acting like a foal himself and she had to smile. He meant the world to her, and she knew he was utterly devoted to her. As she watched him, her eyes caught the flash of an unfamiliar color behind him. It wasn't the colors she expected to see out here in fall. Completely distracted now, Charn moved around Veslo with her eyes locked on the target.
"Veslo. What is that?" She moved closer and her eyes picked out a basket half hidden under a pile of yellow and red leaves. "Veslo! There's a basket there!" Her voice was filled with excitement and worry. Who would leave a basket out here?
