Dictionary definitions can be missleading. The word means self-centered. And if you think I'm wrong, tell my teacher, who I believe is a college professor, that he's wrong. We used the word in my college-level philsophy class. Whether or not college is hard is a matter of opinion, but professors earn their right to teach.

The English language comes from that part of the world, therefore some words still remain from that origin.
