Ellipses are most definitely overused on Gaia, and on the Internet in general. There is a reason we have commas. It's to give a pause in the sentence. Typing ellipses (...) every sentence is not nly incorrect, but it's simply not nice to look at.

I agree with you, even though I use Ellipses a lot it can make a post quite ugly. Although, they can be good if used in the right place.

I don't see how it would be incorrect. It's a given that they are overused, but they are by all means correct. It is really the best way to trail off a sentence that doesn't really end:
I don't know...
vs.
I don't know,
Which one is correct now? Sorry to be mean, but if you post something like this, it's all you'll get in reply.
Personally, I think ellipses are best used in dialogue. I seem to have an ellipse fetish sometimes, but I notice and try to curb the usage of these annoying little space-stealers. They can get repetitive, which is a style flaw, but not incorrect.
EDIT: I didn't say to use them every sentence. Sorry if my point was misconstued. I'm just saying that it's not wrong, but it certainly isn't right.

WRONG. Commas are there for reasons OTHER THAN PAUSES.
That said, ellipses are still overused... but y'know what? I care not!
Only from a purely grammatical standpoint does that matter--and since, in chatting online, you tend to want to emulate your speech patterns as much as possible, PUNCTUATION MARKS CAN BE USED AS THE TYPIST SEES FIT.
Also: capitalization.
Also: entire syntactic structures?
@MOBC: That's still not grammatical correct. As I pointed out in another thread, grammar doesn't give a ******** about how something sounds, its rhythm or WHATEVER. It just exists to permit words to have MEANING.

Ezra Pound @MOBC: That's still not grammatical correct. I think you mean "Grammatically".

But in Gaia the general public generally use elipses as they expect another member to finish off the comment they have started.

I'm sorry for my ignorance, but i've always had a different view of ellipses. My experience with ellipses is limited to the ones that look like this, but i usually see them like this.

I actually think the reason ellipses are used so much on the internet is that the internet has a very conversational tone, so posters are likely to type how they would talk in real life.
I do admit to overusing them, though, ESPECIALLY on Gaia.
Then again . . . maybe not. mrgreen

I usually only use them in term papers and whatnot.
On Gaia, I use them to show uncertainty, but that's rare.

I am definitely an ellipse rapist. I use them in almost every sentence, and I have found myself overusing them in my stories. On messengers, I use them all the time. My friends like to make fun of me by ending every message with a set of ellipses.

*stands up in the circle*
Hello, my name is Yami no Hitokiri and I am here because I abuse ellipses.
I do it mostly in IMs. I have no idea why I do. I just... do. Oops. redface
