Typically, my favorite series are not ones that revolve around romance. However, I never really thought NANA was about romance. To me it is about 2 girls with the same name, whose destinies become intertwined and their lives together as friends and their trials and tribulations. Although, I am a huge fan of music manga and slice-of-life manga. So, just because NANA isn't for you, doesn't make it not a great series. Also, not everyone is as smart as you might think. A lot of people take a lot to get through love, let alone life. The fact that Hachi has relationship troubles and falls in love with every guy she meets is realistic. There really are people like that in the world.
Also, I've never met a fourth grader who even knows what manga is.....O.O That is surprising. But, I don't think either Nana is supposed to really be a role model. They're just your average college girls. Not the next Hilary Clinton or other random women's figure. That's why the manga is so great is because the reality of it.

Whoa, I think there was a lot of hostility towards the first post, and I'll admit I enjoy reading manga, but I think sara-ane makes several good points. I too was annoyed that Hachi didn't seem to be upset about the fact that the guy she was dating was engaged/married. And even if Hachi's ditzy, ditzy doesn't necessarily need to correlate with "slut." I think Hachi sleeps around a little too much. Regardless of that, though, I do like the fact that, as Not a Jellyfish put it, the girls' "destinies become intertwined..." I know a lot of people like this manga and from what I know, Nana is the most popular shojo manga in Japan currently, but I also think that there are better reads out there.

Mira_Russ Whoa, I think there was a lot of hostility towards the first post, and I'll admit I enjoy reading manga, but I think sara-ane makes several good points. I know a lot of people like this manga and from what I know, Nana is the most popular shojo manga in Japan currently, but I also think that there are better reads out there. while i agree that Hachi is a ditz i also have to stand up for her. i believe she was just too stunned to understand what just happened to her. keep in mind that she really has no experience with men in her life being that she has sisters. so far we know nothing of the father.... so for Hachi... it may be all she's known.
and as for that... a bit of personal reason to stand up to it. I have never had that great best friend like hachi has. the manga is about a pair of girls with only their names in common and how they share the bond of friendship. and honestly,... at some points it does seem yuri... but think of your best friend in the entire world... wouldn't you act that way with your bud? they act almost as sisters... I've also been compared to Hachi... not because of the sleeping around... but personality wise. It's hard to explain but a lot of our reactions match with each situation...
However i respect any opinion on the series...
