[I wasn't sure where to put this topic, so General Discussion seemed the most correct place to put it in. Also, sorry if there's already been a thread like this. Move it if you must.]

It probably is seen in all our schools.

"I love S.V.S." or something similar is written in lockers, on book bags, in covers of binders and such.

Recently, I've seen in my school that "I love you" isn't even "i <3 u" anymore. It's become "ilu".

And just when I thought it couldn't get any more abbreviated... or worse.

Have you guys seen this abbreviation yet?

Abbreviations save precious syllables. Why waste energy saying the word in its entirety when you can say "i-loo" (the acronym "ilu")?

I sort of had a moment of silence for the word 'love' the other day. I got this wonderful singing card on Valentine's Day from my boyfriend but on the inside he wrote 'I luv u'. It was cute and all but it didn't make it seem like he meant it in the way he should have. If you love someone enough you won't mind spelling your words out and also making it seem like you care about the future of the english language.

Somehow, "ilu" does not shock me. It just upsets me that I may have to smack my kids for writing like that. Or even worse, that by the time I have kids and they're older that "txt tlk" will have jumped in levels of laziness and stupidity.

What? " " is an abbreviation for love? How corrupt is that? I knew our society had already twisted love and lust together, but to believe love can be implied? *Shudders...* It's odd... I'm a cynical romanticist...

I've seen it. It's not terribly commonplace, though, in my situation.

I know one more way to abreviate it. " heart " I really have seen people so lazy they don't even use words. Thank you human scociety, you've destroyed yourself.

I totally agree . . . without spelling it out all the way it doesn't seem to mean as much. I had a friend whose boyfriend texted messaged 'I love u'. And it was the first time he said it to her.

To type "ilu" for "I love you" just shows how much you don't care. If you love someone, say so.

At least putting " heart " for "love" looks nice, especially if you're drawing it on a card.

A lot of you said that it's more meaningful if you write out the complete word. I agree. If you really do love someone, why not actually take the time to write 'I love you' in full? I mean, if you don't I think it goes to show that you really don't care all that much.

Writing "ilu" doesn't show any emotion.

heart

A heart doesn't even look like that. Someone either can't draw or has never seen a real heart. Maybe they got confused with "harp." Or maybe it's an over-simplification or symbol. "I pump you up."

"I stab you with the pointy part of this thing." That's dumb. But there is a cool way to write "LOVE" inside that shape there.
