OK, My grammar class is starting a new unit next week. Spelling. But, spelling isn't grammar.......right? Spelling is learning to correctly spell words. Grammar is periods and parentheses and whatnot.
Do you think my grammar class should be learning spelling? Or, should we learn it somewhere else?

I see nothing wrong with teaching spelling. It can be just as important.

Yes, technically spelling isn't grammar. However, it's not going to help you if you have perfect syntax and atrocious spelling. If the purpose of a grammar class is to improve the quality of your writing, then spelling is an integral part of that.

I agree. Spelling is not grammer, but if you had perfect grammar, yet your spelling was horrid, what's the point? Spelling and grammar are inter-twined, one needs to be good, for the other to be good, and visa versa. Do you see my point.
And yes, I think spelling needs to be leanred. If it was not, then text talk would take over! Text talk itself is bascialy bad spelling, and unproperly shortening words! So grammar and spelling are both things everyone needs to learn!

Like the others have said, it goes hand in hand. I wish more teachers took the time to actually teach spelling. The last time I had spelling and spelling test I was 11 and 12, in 6th grade.Just because I entered middle school doesn't mean I'm going to be the perfect speller the rest of my life. I'm going to learn new words and in that I'm not going to know how to spell them all. Then again, sadly, in my state kids graduate not even being able to read at grade levels. I'm 18 now and graduating high school and I can tell you, I definitely don't have the best spelling in the world. (Google is my best friend.) And my twin brother he can barely read nas is graduating with me. Our schools make it so easy and it's pathetic.
Anyways spelling might not be grammar but it goes hand in hand. And just take it as a blessing to either better yourself at something you're good at or to be able to learn something new.

Eh. Both spelling and mechanics are parts of grammar, if you ask me.

I think otherwise. Grammar is also the knowledge of when and why you use certain words, and knowing how to structure sentences.
In order to begin working on grammar, you must have a strong foundation on spelling.

I diagree, the point of gramer and spelling is ,in fact ,to help us understand ,and be understood by, oneanother. Not to improve the quality of your writing.

Zealot of Insanity I think otherwise. Grammar is also the knowledge of when and why you use certain words, and knowing how to structure sentences. In order to begin working on grammar, you must have a strong foundation on spelling. They may be different parts, but both of them go hand-in-hand. Like peanut butter and jelly, ham and cheese, or turkey and swiss. Mmm...sandwiches. cheese_whine

psychzac I diagree, the point of gramer and spelling is ,in fact ,to help us understand ,and be understood by, oneanother. Not to improve the quality of your writing. So...the point of writing is not to communicate ideas? If you are writing something down, you are presumably planning on someone else reading it. The better your spelling and grammar, the easier it will be for the reader to understand it. You don't need to spell words when you speak.
