Preparation is the act of
getting prepared.
Preparedness is the state of
being prepared.
I'm not sure "state" is the correct word. Rather, I would say that preparedness is a measure of how prepared you are (i.e., how much preparation you've done
wink ).
They are both correct and real words; it's just that "preparedness" is usually not preferred to similar words like "readiness" and... well, I can't think of any others. Perhaps it's just not a concept we end up addressing directly so often. I mean, are you going to ask, "How prepared are you?" or "What is your preparedness level?"
