So the other day I'm in town, its a nice windswept rainy day, heralding the return of summer to england. When this guy dressed as the typical 'goff' shoulder barges me without so much as a word of apology, now normally I'd expect that off a chav, but not from someone whose part of a fellow sub-culture. So that night, I'm out with my missus and a few old friends, were drinking having laughs, winding up bar wenches, watching tiger porn (don't ask) and laughing and jeering at all the emo's. When that goff guy reappears, talking to his friends about how he gave it to a big bad metal-head.

So naturally I walk over to him, he turns around, see's me and practically wets himself, until his mates get up and start baring down on me, I eye them one by one (theres about 6 of them) and then they start this big thing about how metal fans are scum and lower then emo... at which point their tirade didn't get far as I head butted the one in front of me.

The point of this is, when did alt. cultures get so aggressive against each other? Last time I checked they were meant to be united against chav (or 'prep') and emo... so did I miss a memo or something, or is this just another example of the increasing elitism in people new to the culture?

(Uh... don't you run the emo guild, dude?)

Anyway, it probably goes back to elitism and/or irrational fear of others. As humans continue to divide themselves into groups, it will usually bring diversity or paranoia, which hopefully fades into acceptance.
Personally, I think there just shouldn't be any irrational hatred of other groups anyway (yes, even including wiggers... U.S. for chavs. Why pick on emos, for that matter?).

(This sounds like a rehash of the labels debate!) It sounds like a subculture war alright. Silly too.

(yes I do and its a long amusing story of how I got there)

For the most part your right, but there will always be irrational hatred thats human nature, kill, eat, make babies.

As for picking on emo's, well they bring it on themselves, not all of them, just most of them.

(Not so much this is more the quirky things from across the atlantic type deal.)
I don't think its a sub-culture war, I do however think its a bunch of kids that don't realise if goth is to survive as with any culture, they should not make enemies of groups they were previously on good terms with, were it anyones first encounter with goths, then they would get a terrible first impression.

I didn't realise we were uniting against chavs, preps and other "normals".

I thought I was just living my life.

I must admit that, as an un-American American (I live in the US, but the rest is complicated), I'm unfamiliar with the term 'chav'. Either way, I'd say that this 'goof (goff, sorry)' believes he's an elite member of society because he's "not normal". In other words, he's an idiot who isn't worth the breath he's taking from smarter members of society. As for your solution to the problem of his friends, I love it. Good job!

Things are a bit more militant in the UK to be honest, there's always some group or another trying to stamp out all the others. Not helped by me living in one of the more... physical parts of the country.

Well a Chav... imagine a wigger, now imagine a wigger who hasn't actually ever heard any real rap, now take the elitism of a prep, and throw that into the mix, stir in some cheap catalog jewelery and bright track suits and your there.

And you hit part of my point, he thinks he's elite, but whats worse is, what if I had never met a goth before and this 'goff' was my first encounter with one, how badly would that reflect on the culture itself. Ok, so I'm violent and aggressive, but thats part of the culture I myself am part of, and to that extent we are only violent and aggressive to those who deserve it. But this guy was treating everyone who wasn't dressed like him and his friends with utter contempt.

Just sounds like more people using any excuse to feel better about themselves, and in turn act like an a**.
("I'm so cool because I'm goth, everyone else must be scared to death when they see me")

Most people do seem to use their rank/affiliations to gain an extra feeling of self worth.
Sounds like that, but with a person who wants ofthers to notice.

its so sad to see this because at one time, the goth subculture considered preps to be their "enemy" because they looked down at them and used their social status to put us down. now we're putting each other down?! it's stupid!

Well thats my point, there are people who look down on all non mainstream cultures as being inferior and use ever second to remind us of this, so instead of uniting against that thought, there are now people fighting other sub-cultures to prove a point about who's biggest and baddest.

where i live(between the goths and gangsters, which i understand some call chavs)but goths bashing on other goths and metalheads?

to me it allways seemed as if goths, punks, emos, metalheads, rivetheads and skaters kinda all helped eac other out,not bashed each other.

Well this is my point, I mean to war with the metal heads where I love is pretty pointless regardless of numbers, given we're the kind of people who go barreling through reinforced glass bus shelters, because its a laugh.

Wish I was there I would have put them all in the hospital for thier disgraceful behavor, but culture battles are alot like religous differance. Even the smallest differance can cause violence its just the way it is.Here its the preps, gangsters are sorta a aliie we have an unwritten rule you leave us alone we leave you alone, a few times that rule has been broken only a few. That was cause a few posers decided to get in a fight with the gooths, not only did the goths straighten them out so did the gangsters.
