Sorry about the title. Not enough room. Dxx Anyway, what's the difference between the two?

And when do you use them each respectively?

This has just been nagging at ,me for a while...

I have the vague idea that you're supposed to speak to someone and talk about someone else, but it's such a forgotten distinction these days that I don't even know.

To talk and to speak are to be used in different idioms. For example, you would generally "talk" to someone, and you would probably "speak" at a seminar, meeting, etc. I'm not sure if there are other idioms in which to use them, but they don't necessarily hold the same sort of tone.

Speaking is if you're talking to a group of people.
Talking is if you're talking to one person.
