The criminal thing was a test but just in case I shall give you another one, I have experienced many things in my life including witnessing my friend's being shot... Your question is flawed on multiple levels, and has no correct answer. On the shallow external level for what you're looking for, one would assume you would have to have reminded the friend that life was worth living, and to not give up so easily.

However, who is to say that he is not suffering from a mental illness? Perhaps the best course of action was to seek out a medical professional.

Maybe, death was the best option.

Then, there's multiple time travel theories. Many of which believe that you cannot alter the events of what shall happen, so nothing you could have done would have stopped his suicide.

Regardless, for the species as a whole, less people is good for we are overpopulated, and destroying our planet at an alarming rate. Also, who's to say that maybe he would have ended up destroying the human race?

Philosophical questions such as this are not viable.
