Mmur tried it, lashing out at the hunter's face with his fist and... missing almost completely. "Back down, you unnatural copy. There can be only one Merlin Golod, and... what?"

Once Mmur had gotten to giggling in earnest, he found he couldn't stop. "Your name is... Merlin Golod?"

"Yeah. S...so?" The human seemed a little upset at Mmur's words, drawing back a step and frowning.

The horseman knew that although his own name was both stealthy enough to whisper across silent sands and well suited to barking over the battlefield, Merlin Golod was a little overreaching for a human name.

"I'm... sorry?"

"I suppose it's nice... being named after someone you hunters hold so dear." Mmur fidgeted, clearly uncomfortable with the subject and his current situation.

"You know, you'd think so, but it's actually kind of ann—"

Mmur jabbed his fist toward the hunter's face, grinning widely when his punch connected. "I don't care, really." He shrugged.

"Why... I...!" The hunter's whip whined past Mmur's ear and the horseman raised his hand, catching the bladed segments on the handle of his own weapon. He yanked the human closer, sinking his teeth into Merlin's neck and reveling in the sound of his scream.

When Mmur let him go, his double ran off, hand pressed firmly to his bleeding wound. The soldier started to give chase, but Death's words stopped him short, as few of them as he had heard. This was a lesson. They were not meant to kill. First and foremost, Mmur followed orders, especially those given by an Ancient.

With a disappointed snarl, the horseman stayed where he was, staring after the hunter with his hands balled in tight fists.

His first battle opportuity with the dreaded enemy came suddenly, and he should feel thankful for it. But even as he was provided with the opportunity to prove himself - to his clan, to his dead family members, to himself - Guowei couldn't help but feel a little sick... And he wasn't pretending this time.

He might have a lot of feelings towards these humans called 'hunters' - and hate was certainty a part of it - but he had always been a scholar at heart, and now that he was really at the front lines of a battle? It was different from what he imagined, different from the beautiful paintings that hung off the walls of the study room he once studied in, on the Isle of Conquest. It was bloodier and noisier.

Quickly, he summoned his bow, the weapon felt so familiar and yet foreign in his hand; he did practice often enough, but never long or hard enough to be skilled at it. Looking around, he picked a target that, like him, wasn't moving much so as improve his chances of hitting, and pulled back the drawstring to form an arrow completely made of Fear. Besides, that hunter was wearing an armband with a red cross on it, and that was the human version of 'battlefield physician'; yes, it was a dirty trick, but he had to protect his own brethren in some way, right? He aimed for a knee, hoping to cripple one of the hunters, and let the arrow go.

Surprisingly, his aim was true. However, what surprised him even more was the fact that the hunter, upon falling backwards from his attack, immediately vomited blood. His first thought was that it didn't make sense; the hunter wasn't wounded before, and he didn't hit any vital organs that might cause such a reaction. His second thought was that he knew of only one person who would do that, and it was usually followed by some kind of excuse to leave a particularly physically draining task-

"Hey, guys, my sickness is coming back! Can I be excused from-" The hunter stopped suddenly, and Guowei could see that his eyes were widening; truth be told, his own eyes were probably the size of saucers.

It was almost like looking into a mirror.

Actions speak louder than words. Very well. Yves shall remain patient for a little longer and go along with whatever Death had planned so as to see for himself what the Ancient meant to show them. He tapped his fingers idly on his knee, his eyes narrowing at Nox's account as he gave a derisive snort that pretty much surmised his own opinion on the subject that was broached on. Spare the jacking Humans so that there would be more Fear to go around in the long run? Would be interesting to see if he was still able to sing the same tune if the Hunters offed his entire family one of these days.

He blinked once when their surrounding changed all of a sudden, jumping onto his feet and readying his kodachi just in case he needed to respond to something. Questions were already forming in his mind as to where and what they all had been brought here for when he stopped at the sight of the Humans... no Hunters who now stood before them. All was still as if time had stopped and then everyone moved to engage the other faction in battle.

One of them in particular stood out to him and the War Executioner crossed over to intercept the young male, his blade still in its sheath as he lifted it to parry the blow the Hunter was already throwing his way while his remaining free hand connected a punch with his opponent's side. The Hunter rewarded him with a grunt for his effort, wincing as he leaped back to put some distance between the both of them.

Yves blinked at his choice of action. There was something vaguely familiar about it and then it finally hit him as to why it felt so when his gaze met the other's to find the both of them as alike in appearance as two peas in a pod. "... the ********? You've got to be kidding me." Just what in Jack's name was going on here?

The confusion was obvious on the faces belonging to both Hunter and Horseman, a lack of comprehension as to what sorcery was at work here as they looked the other over with a dumbfounded expression crossing their respective faces. It was ultimately the Hunter who decided to take the initiative in making the next move, his arm pulled back as he charged to Yves then swung his blade in a wide arc towards his torso.

There was barely enough time for the War Horseman to react, much lest think this time round, his reflexes kicking in as he brought up his still sheathed weapon to deflect the blow, the fingers that were gripped around its sheath lifting so as to let it fall so that he could thrust his blade swiftly in an upward arc across the Hunter's inner arm to draw blood. The Hunter gave a sharp hiss, pulling his injured arm back to himself as he pressed his other hand over his wound to staunch the bleeding while he began to back away from Yves.

Smirking to himself, Yves held his kodachi up in front of him, his eyes crinkling with amusement at how soft this Human was despite looking every bit like himself as he closed in on his targeted prey. "What's wrong? Can't take a tiny cut without having to run crying to mummy?"

"... I'm not afraid of monsters like you! That's the reason why I'm standing here as a proud member of the Hunters so we can rid the world of abominations like yourself!" Such brave words coming from a puny Human. Yves mused to himself. Much as he loathed to admit to it now, there was a time when he would say things like this to his sparring opponents but that was way back when he had yet to become a full fledged Executioner. A period of time in his youth when he was very prone to being rash and reckless, just like how the Hunter suddenly decided to throw all caution to the wind in favour of charging towards him again with his weapon.

Yves managed to side step this, but not before the Hunter had the satisfaction of seeing his blade nick his side. He cheered at his own success, swinging his weapon a few times in front of him at the same time as if to demonstrate to Yves what he was capable of. "See? You're not as invulnerable as you think you are hellish fiend!"

Yves was about to attempt attacking the Hunter when he stopped at the other's words with an unreadable expression crossing his face. Was it the other's words that were affecting him so? No. Can't be when he had already come across countless variations of the names that the Humans used to refer to them by. He dived onto the ground when the Hunter made another attempt on his life again, the kodachi that the other wielded cutting across his right wing this time before he managed to roll himself to safety.

Getting into a crouch on the ground, he kept his poise low, growling as emeralds filled with contempt glared at the Hunter before him. He was way above this puny Human in skill and he would show him eventually when he had the satisfaction of ending the hunt with his blade driven through his still beating heart.

It was akin to a face off with another individual equally skilled and trained as yourself, only worse as each blow was deflected or parried in predictably the same way as he envisioned himself doing had he been in the Hunter's position. Things remained status quo and in a stalemate as the pair traded blows, the fight shifting from the usual one in which the more witty or skilled among them would emerge victorious to a drawn out test of one's stamina and endurance.

"Give it up foul creature. What can you hope to achieve here when you and your kind are surrounded by us on our home ground. I'm sure that you and I are both aware as to what is happening here now right? Surrender and I'll give you my word that your end will be quick and painless." The Hunter taunted, pausing for a moment to try to catch his breath.

It was an opportunity that Yves was not about to let slip through his fingers. He sprinted to the Hunter's current location, brandishing his kodachi as he aimed low this time, grinning to himself when he managed to catch the other off guard and make a clean cut across his thigh. Him surrender? Hah! That sounded more like his line in fact. "How about you surrender instead?"

"I wonder about that..? Don't you wonder why we look alike?" The hunter mused wonderingly.

"Who is the real one? Isn't it strange that one is a hunter and the other is a horseman? I wonder what you're truly are~"

"You really know how to get on one's nerves~" Mir couldn't help but see that this hunter had the same talent of hitting a person's feelings to the core. Sending an upward kick up to escape from her, she jumped back to avoid her reach. Another attack of her chains hit the hunter's shield, "Tch," she looked away briefly in disappointment.

CRACK.

The ground split underneath everyone, the Hunters remaining, the horsemen-

- As everyone was swallowed inside.

It was grey. Everything was grey, and then white. There was noone else, just them, and then voices.

"Why are you still here?"

"Are you still here?"

"Where are you?"

"I don't want to be alone."

"I WANT TO GO-"

-"HOME".

Jagged edges, black. Fog, grey, wisps, curling around everything, obscuring, making everything so strange, so foreign. Around the corners of their eyes, something, somethings seemed to move, shifting and then exhaling back into fog, formless and yet half-sentience.

The voices wouldn't stop ringing.

Beneath them, the grey crackled earth began shaking, fumes of white, black, white-black turning into tendrils and then hands that grabbed at the horsemen, attempting to pull them in. Above the sky churned and swirled and for a second shifted into faces, hundreds of faces blankly staring at them into one twisted cauldron before a giant mouths split open, perfectly aligned teeth breaking into a long, long grin-

- A strange wind began to pillow around them, no, not wind, but fog, now forming odd shapes and growing larger, an arm, a limb, an eye, teeth, tendrils, hair -

- "Your distortion crystals." The Horsemen of Death's voice rang clear even as the horsemen themselves were overwhelmed. There was nothing protecting them from the Insanity oncoming, a formless mass without structure, simply existing without purpose or even intent. If Insanity was indeed a broken core, the ones that lived in this area were beyond broken, simply fragments of fragments, the scattered remains of meager pieces of grey dust that still refused to die because they had but a single intent-

-"HOME"-.

"Now", commanded the Ancient of Death, "Give me your distortion crystals now."

Teal eyes continued to stare at her. Instead of looking defiant, they looked scared. Ying's were the defiant ones. She would not be bested by a hunter look alike.

A crack split the earth, the sky- the world it seemed. A familiar sight. Insanity.

"It was a trap?" Ying said quietly, eyes flicking worriedly to her brother. Death had trapped them. He had lied. Perhaps he wanted to see their destruction; he'd only told them about their elimination because he wanted to be the one to cause it.

Yet he was summoning them to give their crystals. He had not abandoned them. Was this according to plan?

Ying couldn't find it in herself to disobey. She had never been rebellious, ever. If necessary, she would die honorably, with her clan, as it should have been. Carefully, she unclipped the teal crystal that dangled in her ponytail. It shimmered a cheerful color, swirling with the power she'd collected. With a hearty heave, she tossed it in Death's direction. Though it seemed foolish with the swirling tempest forming above them, she still believed in his power- the power of the Horsemen.

The sound came first, sharp and clear. But it wasn't the sound that startled Kiwi, so much as the sight of grey and white closing in all around him, foggy hands that clawed and grappled about his legs.

It was happening again. He could hear them, plain as day, whispering so sweetly of homeeeeeee. His hands closed round his ears, golden eyes squeezed tight, but it did nothing to still the madness. It was coming for him, consuming him again ... nothing but whispers and the cool, calming breath of fog across his skin ...

... And then Death's voice rang out, filtering between the voices like an echo in the distance. Their crystals. The Famine soldier glanced down to his, squeezed tight in one hand. It glowed a bright, vibrant green, full of a FEAR it had been hungry for for quite some time. ... Did he want to let it go?? ... Would it really matter?? ... If he kept it, perhaps he would at least be safe, be-

Homeeeeeee.

Homeeeeeeeeeee ...

Come back to ussss ... come homeeee with ussss ...

You'll be sssssafeee here ...

... So be it, Death. Kiwi tore the crystal from his bracelet with a snap, tossing it with all his might into the mist. He only hoped it would reach the ancient, wherever in this chaos he was. The colt closed his eyes tight again, and let the images of his friends filter through the voices filling his mind. He didn't want to go there again ... He didn't want to hurt them like that again ...

His hand remained locked to the clasp of his bracelet, where the crystal had been only a moment before.
