Buying Scissors

Why Pick Friskers

Friskers is largest line to pick from with many options to pick from and many varities. They are sure tested and are a popular go to brand.

Why Pick Gingher

What Gingher lacks in product selection, it more than makes up for in quality and features. The product often cost more than a standard pair with $50 being pretty common for a basic pair. Gingher scissors are stainless steel and if they go dull you can contact the company to have them resharpen.

Why Pick Singer.

Singer is the cheapest option, but being the cheapest option means it's also the lowest quality of them all. Many people usually start with Singer as a biggers scissor, but quickly update when they find they enjoy their hobby.

Why Pick Olfa

Olfa is a brand deticated to quilters and thus most of their products are about quilting. While Olfa brand stuff are nice to have around for products, it also can be harder to find parts or the right scissors for the job.

Types of Thread and Brands

All Purpose

The name says it all. All purpose thread can be used for most projects. All Purpose thread is made of polyester or some type of poly-cotton combo. Most sewing projects will use this type of thread.

Cotton

Cotton thread is 100% cotton and is used mostly for quilting and projects that will be in heated enviroments. Some of these projects include bowl cozies, rice bags, ironing board covers, and any project that can be put in the microwaves or against something too hot.

Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty thread is used for furinture and things that may get a little beating.

Elastic

This is thread that stretches for needs. The most popular use of this thread is to make smocking.

Embrodery

Embrodery is thin and shiny thread that is used for embrodery machines and project. Be careful not to accendently pick up this thread as it's the most commonly picked up by new sewers.

Serger

Serger thread is used in a serger machine. Serger thread is thin and usually found in a cone same. The thinnest of the thread comes from the fact that it's made to be used in tandom with three other serger threads. Be careful not to grab serger thread thinking that you will save money by buying more.

Metalic

Metalic thread is decorative and usually used for embrodery. Should you chose to use this in a normal machine, you will need to get a metalic needle to prevent it from breaking.

Wool

Wool thread is made of wool and is usually used on thicker projects. It's also usable if your doing some historical costumes.

Silk

Silk thread is normally reserved for embrodery, but can be found in sewing forms as well.

Nylon

Nylon can be used for medium weight fabrics and is popular with leather since it doesn't rot like cotton will over time and from the dyes. The most common use of Nylon thread is for athletic wear and swimsuits.

Demin/Jean

Demin or Jean thread is slightly thicker and made in a limited amount of colors to match your demin.

Invisable

Invisable thread is a thread that is made of plastic, but when sewn with will disappear in appearance. This is not a replacement for different sewing techinques that hide thread as you can still see outlines with invisable thread.
