There are several possible and probable reasons for that. One being that when you are in your younger teens you have the laziness gene and just don't feel like writing out the words.
Another reason could be simply that adults around the age of 20 years old and older have been more introduced into the English language and literature throughout there later years in high school and their early years in college. One thing you learn really quick when you hit college is that you need to write English properly to do well on your assignments and you seem to take it more seriously because you are paying for your education and you are choosing it. That's what I have found anyway. As a third year college student, I understand more of the importance of speaking proper English then most 12 and 13 year olds would. Not to mention the fact that when you are in your earlier teens you are still in the process of learning a lot of the techniques of writing and reading in English. You don't learn a lot of how to right essays and papers until later on. That doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to write coherent sentences though.

By the way: I am 20 years old.

Well, obviously some younger people just don't have strong grammar skills.

Apart from that, the media often glamourizes (sorry, I do know that's not a word) text talk.

But I think that for the most part, age has little to do with whether a person is or isn't literate. Several people in my grade still write as if they were in kindergarten, but some of them might as well be adults.

And how old am I?

I'll never tell. But you're free to guess all you want.

I've just turned 11 today. Which means I'm I 5th grader. I feel very young here. And I'm very literate. When I role-play, I usually only put a paragraph or two, but I do try my best. This morning I was saying things like "Omg" out loud. But I was only fooling around.
