Definetely Flonne, for story characters. ^^ In addition, you can recruit various followers from the Dark Assembly, such as archers - whom are uber cute, btw -, mages, knights, warriors and things of that nature.
Let me ask you this: ever play Final Fantasy Tactics? If so, then Disgaea, and related games are pretty much FFT on crack ... xd

I've played FF tactics advance... I think it's similar... A friend of mine has a game called La Pucelle tactics, and I read it's name on a list of games by the company that makes disgaea. Is it part of the same series?

Sort of. ^^ Prier from LPT is in Disgaea as a hidden boss.
Most of Nippon Ichi's games are inter-connected in some way, shape or form.

Yeah. I managed to get mine from eBay for about $60. It easily runs about $60-70, with some Buy It Nows asking in the neighborhood of $90! x__x
And, don't get me started on the PS1's Lunar duology ... *sigh* It always seems the good games in life are the most rare and expensive! $_$
