Fresnel black_wing_angel Well, we perfected the light bulb, electricity, the assembly line, space travel, and so on. Have you not paid attention to this thread? Actually, we may or may not have invented space travel. Check it.Note that this event precedes Sputnik by only a couple months. ETA: My bad, first object in space was a V2 rocket, launched by Nazi Germany.
He said "perfected" though. And I gotta admit you guys do like to rape every nook and cranny possible the most efficiently.
Far from perfect but they aren't blowing up that often.

I know, but you get higher ground with invention than perfection.
That's probably because we're using 20-year-old spaceships. Look at White Knight/SpaceShipOne. Roughly five years old, and can be launched into orbit and landed safely on a runway easier than a space shuttle, AND it only costs a couple hundred thousand dollars. SpaceShipOne was retired and donated to the Smithsonian, but a newer design, SpaceShipTwo, is already underway.
Actually, SpaceShipOne is American, as is the creator of the space hotel (Genesis I/II), Robert Bigelow (founder of Budget Hotels). So far the hotel is still in its testing stages, but I believe they're pre-selling stays there at 100k a night.
We're also the only ones to land on the moon, and AFAIK the only ones to have sent craft to all eight other planets. Damn, we've pretty much cornered the market on space exploration. I'm pretty sure the EU has funded a handful of craft over the years, and probably quite a few astronomical satellites, but nothing like what we've done.
