Has no one entered for Samawatu and Waridi?
PostPosted: Fri Aug 12, 2011 11:00 am

Applying for: Samawati & Waridi
Player of Samawati: Neon Fly
Player of Waridi: Hanging Gallow

Prompt: These two love to play tricks on whomever they can get their paws on. Play out an example of one of these tricks.

Samawati// #41b7c5
Waridi// #d782a6

“I’m going to rip your head off, you little bug!” The roar of a frustration spurred rage split the air as the massive male twisted on his haunches to continue giving chase. Despite himself, Waridi giggled with glee to be able to outsmart the brute. Sama’s enthusiasm was so damn infectious.

With his belly to the ground, Samawati was already crawling to the next meeting point, laying in wait for the final pass now that the rogue was charging around blindly. It wasn’t long before a grinning face, full of meat, was staring back at him. He chuckled breathily, rolling his eyes. As much as Wari continually scolded him for being an immature, grudge holding, vindictive creature that often took things to extremes, by the time they were shoulders deep in s**t he was loving every second of it. And that’s why they were the twin terrors of the unclaimed lands.

With the bait in his jaws, Sam popped up, watching with a snort of derision as his quarry stood behind him, circling around like a wild dog chasing its tail after he had lost his prey for what must have felt like the millionth time. HEH! LOO’IN FOH ME?

The taunting call caused eyes nearly bursting with red blood vessels to pin Sama, whipping around wordlessly with a final, startling burst of speed. A perfectly executed façade of terror caused pure blue eyes to grow round and owlish, turning tail to run. The rhythmic drum beat of paws continuing to encroach on his backside unnervingly.

Closer. Closer. WUMPH.

AAAAHH HAHAHAHAAA! Like a half crazed hyena Samawati dropped the remains of a kill he and his brother had brought down the day before. Reeling around to jog towards the bested adult jauntily, head held high and chest thrust out.

Did he fall in? A curious head popped above the wheat colored grass.
Yea.. that dumb a** charged right into it. Grinning triumphantly down at the disoriented and pacing figure below, his attempts to lunge out fell short. The loose earth giving way quickly under the weight of the giant causing him to fall back to the bottom with each attempt.

“Just wait.. when I get out of here, you snot nosed runts are going to wish you’d never been born.” But snarling threats fell on deaf ears as Sam stared into the pit and returned dryly. Might want to consider using your energy more conservatively, you’re probably going to be stuck down there for a while.

And then after a moment he added ironically, I’m just thinking of you.

Come on Waridi, lets go.
Wait, we’re not really going to just leave him there… without any food or water are we? As the adrenaline rush began to fade, Wari was realizing the weight of their actions. A frown settling upon his maw.

Oh come on! He’s a complete lowlife! We haven’t given him anything less than he deserves! Really, Sam couldn’t believe they were actually discussing this, again. Making a sound in his throat of annoyance.

He’ll die, Samawati! Do you really want to fall to his level? Characteristically gentle, pink eyes hardened with disapproval tacking it to his brother’s backside.

Chht, fine. Shoving the flank towards Waridi, he nodded his golden head towards the hole. If he’s smart he’ll be able to make that last a while. Maybe someone will pass by and take pity on him. Happy?

Wari didn’t answer. Quietly picking up the heavy chunk of carcass and tossing it in with their bully. Slow to turn and follow his brother away from the stranded lion. Affording only one last, lingering glance before jogging to catch up with his twin.

The Day Prior

“This meal is too much for you boys, why don’t I just take it for you?” The enormous rogue that stood over Samawati and Waridi blotted out the sun, casting the golden duo and the struggling impala beneath their paws. He wasn’t asking so much as telling the pair what was about to happen. A heavy paw dropping upon the golden side of the shell shocked grazer, sinking his claws into the beast’s flesh as he began to pry it from the twins.

Hey! What gives?! You think just cause you’re an adult you can take advantage of us? Get lost you dirtball! Samawati was the first to react, as usual, letting his temper get the best of him as he exploded at the adult. Furious that this pompous stranger would arrive off the horizon and demand ownership over a kill he hadn’t worked for.

“Well, the way I see it.. we can do this one of two ways. You can simply give it to me… or I can crack both your heads and take it by force. I’m just thinking of you guys.” He returned coolly, less than impressed with the adolescent’s bravado.

Waridi spoke up, trying to act as his brother’s voice of reason. It certainly seemed as if Sama had been born without one and often needed a gentle reminder to reconsider his actions when it appeared as though he were prepared to make a bad situation worse. Sam, it’s not worth it.

Like hell it’s not! The temperamental teen scowled, charging rather recklessly at their titan of an opponent. This is insane, was all the rose eyed brother could think as he followed his brother’s lead, refusing to leave his only kin in a bind even when he knew the unsavory outcome. They were all the other had. If Waridi didn’t stand beside Samawati, who would?

Later that Evening

Sprawled in the tall grass, licking an open wound on his forearm Waridi sighed softly. In the end they had been chased from their kill anyway. An outcome that the level-headed twin had foreseen even without the abilities of a seer. Samawati was no less worse for wear, but a drone-like perseverance caused him to devise a plan even more outrageous than attacking a full grown lion. He could hear his brother growling and swearing under his breath, though after several hours he could no longer see Sama.

Dirty, rotten, no good, slug sucking rhinoceros turd. We’ll show him. We’ll show everybody. Think they can mess with us just because we’re younger. Just because we’re alone. Vivid blue hues swirled with malignant thoughts sourly. It wasn’t that he wasn’t grateful to Waridi for finally dragging him away from the losing battle by his scruff when the more clear minded of the pair had realized they would accomplish nothing. It was simply that he couldn’t stand being taken advantage of because others saw them as weak. What did they know about weakness? Between himself and Waridi was a unity so strong that nothing could defeat them and he was hell bent on proving it.

Ignoring the ache in his tattered body and the rawness of his paws Samawati continued to claw at the earth. Kicking and shoving the dirt from the bottom of the hole he had spent the last few hours creating. This is going to be the prank that tops all previous pranks. Just wait and see, he told himself. A positively wicked grin forming upon his maw.

Despite the concern he often felt for his sibling, Waridi could only deter Samawati from his antics so much to protect him from himself. When his mind was set, there was really no talking him out of it, which made Wari damage control. Aren’t you tired? Why don’t you come get some rest? You’ve been digging all night.

Shut up and help me out of here. A curt tone echoed from the depths of Samawati’s hole causing Wari to snort humorously before finally rolling onto his paws.

First you don’t want help, then you do want help, would you make up your mind?
Just get over here!
You haven’t even told me what you’re planning yet.

A sound of exasperation filled the cavern that Waridi found himself staring into. It was deep. Deep enough to make him realize that a lot of work had gone into this trap in a short amount of time. Sam’s drive was almost frightening at times.

I left a vine up there, toss it in. Blue eyes peered through the darkness, seeming to answer his brother’s puzzled expression before Waridi could even ask. Using the vine like a game of tug-of-war, Samawati was topside in a few clawing bounds up the straight incline.

How is he going to get out of there? Wari questioned, his tone wavering with unease.
He’s not. Was the answer, blunt and as casual as if they were conversing about the weather.

Have you lost your mind? Rose colored eyes were wide in disbelief, inciting Samawati to roll his eyes impatiently.

Are you in or out?
Don’t ask me that, you know my answer, but--
Good, get some sleep. Tomorrow’s going to be fun. Laughingly giving his brother’s ear an affectionate tug Sam jogged past Waridi to collapse in the impression left in the grass by a body that resembled his own down to the last marking. Finding little qualms when a familiar shape molded into the shape of his own body, chin resting on his flank like yin and yang.

/end. YAY! This was so much fun to write. x3

Haha. Yeah I was just checking in to see if things were starting soon and I noticed that pair didn't have anyone entered yet. Had the mind to try for Sama since I tend to enjoy that character type but no one I've asked seems to be interested. As long as they have an entry though I won't feel so bad about not finding anyone. =p

Applying for: Zene
Player of Zene: Wotcher

Zene had been on her own since juvenile, at least until she was taken in my Tungiza's group. What happened? This is digging into her backstory, so feel free to come up with whatever you'd like.

Growing up with her mother, the single cub of her litter, Zene was an ordinary child. Though she was polite and not too much of a troublemaker, even the sweetest of cubs occasionally throw tantrums and get into spats with their parents. Zene was no different.

One such tantrum was started a particularly bright morning, as Zene’s mother prepared to go hunt. The lioness considered her daughter still too young to accompany her on hunts, and urged Zene to stay behind in the cool shadow of a tree. It would be dangerous, for both her and Zene, to have a child tagging along noisily, when stealth and silence were most needed. Their bellies would be empty that night, surely, and the mother knew it was a bad idea even if her young daughter did not understand. But Zene, her pride fueled by indignation and youth, wanted to go along with her mother and see the hunt firsthand. She was a juvenile, gosh, and completely ready to learn about all of the things adults do! Couldn’t her mother see she wasn’t a little baby anymore? Apparently not, because her mother staunchly refused to allow Zene’s company on the hunt, and left her glowering daughter behind as she moved out.

While her mother was gone, Zene stewed in her disappointment. She had just wanted to help! She never had any fun, or did cool things, or anything like that! Sitting under trees, crouching in grass, listening and waiting for safety, that’s all her mother ever wanted her to do. Well, she’d show her! A few days previously, Zene had overheard a pair of birds talking about “the gypsies.” They were a wandering mishmash group of orphans, rogues, and unloved children. All day long the gypsies sang songs, told stories, and played with each other, laughing and smiling until they were too tired to do it anymore. No stupid rules, just fun, awesome activities all day long. Zene even bet they would teach her how to hunt. Her mind set, Zene left the tree’s shadow and set out to find the gypsies, who would truly love and understand her.

A short while after Zene departed, her mother returned while dragging a freshly killed antelope. The kill was forgotten once the lioness discovered her daughter was missing, and the panicked mother began to call for her child. She followed the faint paw prints of Zene, leading her to a nearby river. Thank goodness, maybe her daughter had only come for a drink of water? She was nowhere near, though, and the trail of prints had stopped at the river’s edge. Peering across the span of the river, Zene’s mother’s breath caught in her throat at what she was. On the other side of the river, a group of crocodiles were leering at her, snapping and tugging between them at a small hunk of striped meat. A wet and dirty hunk of striped meat looked very much like a hunk of wet and dirty dead cub to a hysterical Zene’s mother, and with a strangled yell she cursed the crocodiles for taking her one and only daughter. Defeated, the lioness moved away from the river, taking her grief with her.

However, Zene was alive and well not too far away, cooling her paws as she walked along the edge of the water. When she’d reached the river she had hastily scooted down its length, not wanting to attract the attention of the crocodiles who were already tearing apart an unfortunate zebra foal. Though she hadn’t been gone from her mother for long, Zene was beginning regretting her decision. A low, unpleasant growl of hunger rolled through her stomach, and she wondered if her mother had returned from her hunt yet. She’d probably gotten an antelope, or maybe even a warthog… The thought made the choice of turning around very easy.

When she returned to the tree, Zene found the discarded antelope her mother had killed, but no mother. Her mother must have gone to find her once she returned and realized she was no longer there! She’d come back soon, and with these contented thoughts Zene dug into the antelope. But mother did not come back. Zene waited for three days before finally moving, knowing that the rotting stink of the remaining antelope would soon attract hyenas or other unsavory characters. She looked for her mother, but she was nowhere to be found. In truth, the lioness was far away, constantly moving in an attempt to outrun her grief.

Zene remained alone as she grew, never again running across her mother even by chance. She prospered on her sweetness, earning food from other travelers in exchange for kindness and sad eyes. She had never learned to hunt, ironically. When Zene met Fefe one night during a failed hunt, it was the dusky lioness who offered Zene a chance to travel with Tungiza’s group and finally teach her to hunt. She accepted, happy to be part of a family once more.

Zene will be sure not to try and find the gypsies again, though.

Applying for: Samawati & Waridi
Player of Samawati: Mogami
Player of Waridi: Strawberry Gumi Bunny

These two love to play tricks on whomever they can get their paws on. Play out an example of one of these tricks.

“Just pull it a little tighter!” the young lion said in an excited whisper, blue eyes searching for his brother’s pink ones. There was a familiar glint of trickery in them, one that hardly ever left the cool-colored gaze of the yellow adolescent. “Hey, did you see Umaarufu’s face when he heard there were rumors about him and Idris?” That was Samawati. His loud, boasting voice would carry far had he not been making a great effort to keep his whispers as quiet as possible.

"Who hasn't heard with how loud 'some people' going on about it?" Came the slightly annoyed, and muffled voice of Waridi as he spoke around the vine in his mouth. Bracing his paws in the dirt, he did as instructed, pulling back to raise it higher. "I'm leaving you up there and running if we get caught..."

Samawati chuckled once, rather loudly and then again though his efforts to keep the noise to a minimum actually worked and only a muffled sound came out the second time.

“I talked to Ruva yesterday. I said something bad about Idris and she actually laughed.” He looked victorious - as if he’d just returned from an impossible battle with an unexpected win - his tail lashing out playfully and hitting his brother gently and causing ripples of trepidation on Waridi’s coat. “She’s warming up to me, I tell you.”

A slight smirk spread over his twin’s maw as he listened to him go on about the older lioness. Again. "I wonder if her finding out that we're the ones who 'accidentally' dyed her fur green with those plants a bit back would reverse all your hard work..." He muttered under his breath. But no. He wouldn't do that to his twin. It was a little too cruel for a prank.

“Don’t tell her that. Ever.” Even though his amused grin fought against bravely against extinction, for once Samawati actually looked a little worried. Just a little... and it didn’t last long. “Did you see her hunt yesterday? The way she took down that gazelle?”

It was a groan that came in response first, nearly causing him to lose hold of the vine, which he quickly snapped his jaws back around, pulling it back up. "Noo. No I didn't see. Do ya know why? Because I wasn't the one who was stalking her..." He taunted, smirking up to his brother. "If she's so skilled why didn't she catch YOU?" He snickered out around the vine, pulling back to raise the questionable bundle it was holding higher.

“Do you think Umaarufu is angry about those rumors we started about him and Idris? He looked so worried.” He laughed a little but it wasn’t a mean laugh. They were on good terms with the older lion, after all and creating gossip of love affairs that never existed in the first place was becoming an old trick by now. “Not so tight! It will break!”

"I've got it." He huffed out, shifting his focus from listening to his brothers words, to their current project once more.

“Remember when we convinced that little mouse to tie everyone’s tail tufts together?” Samawati chuckled with a mischievous expression. This was only one of their most recent pranks and one of the most amusing ones by far. The look on everyone’s faces as they’d found themselves stuck to each other and, for once, the twins seemed to have a solid alibi as well. Priceless. But they had also disappeared during a training exercise and it was a rare day when they didn’t use their great resemblance to confuse the others in the group or even a passing rogue. Oh, the stories these two could tell.

Waridi grinned at the remembrance, shaking his head lightly. "Oh, that will be nothing compared to this... I wonder who'll be unlucky enough to stumble into it..."

Samawati laughed, carefully adding a long branch to their latest creation. He looked like the happiest lion in the world.

“It’s perfect.”

Brushing against Waridi’s side lightly, the blue-eyed twin stepped back to admire their work, a great concoction of twigs and branches that surrounded the entrance of the den where some of the others were sleeping. As soon one of them decided to come outside, the whole thing would certainly fall on the poor unsuspecting lion or lioness. The two brothers stood together, side by side, sharing one long moment of shared accomplishment and anticipation.

“Simple but effective.” Samawati said with obvious enjoyment, eyes sparkling, full of mischief.

“Let’s get out of here.” Waridi let out a curt but amused sound before turning slowly away. He knew there was no point in rushing because it wouldn’t take a genius to figure out the twins were behind the newest commotion.

Applying for: Tungiza
Player of Tungiza: one over three

You recieved a vision of a lush land with Pride Rock at its center. Uneasiness follows it, but in your opinion, the positives outweigh the negatives. You do not sense anything dangerous following you as you lead the group into the Pridelands for the first time, but you are unable to shake the uneasy feeling. Describe your thoughts over what this may mean for the group you've gathered.

He'd been successful enough as a lone rogue. Brief periods of injury or illness had taken their expected tolls in turn but he'd always recovered. If not for the presence of the fair Zene he likely would have returned to life as a rogue rather then join the travelers. She was so gentle, so kind. He followed the group solely for a chance at winning her heart.

At first such selfish ideas where all he concerned himself with. The group functioned the same as it had before he'd arrived, only being impacted much at all by those who joined afterwards. Watching from the sidelines he began to notice a lack of coordination amongst his fellows. Often it would have little impact, someone would have to run to catch up with the group or would wait at the wrong meeting point. Other times it would cost them a meal. With so many mouths to feed making successful kills was important. Nothing drove this point home harder then the bickering that ensued whenever the group had to go hungry yet again.

He'd never intended to set himself up as a leader. After all, he was only making a little suggestion here, offering a new tactic there. Once he stepped in when the hijinks of Samawati and Waridi were beginning to get out of hand, and then it seemed that the others seemed to come to him whenever they had a problem. He helped whenever he could and as fairly as he could, hoping Zene would notice and think well of him for it.

Some of his impact he could see clearly. They were making kills more consistently for once. He couldn't remember the last time he'd gone hungry. The full impact he was having was well invisible to him until the ground began to dry up around them. The river where they'd most recently called their home was nearly dry. The group was split between traveling up stream to find the source, or down stream in hopes of finding a lingering pond. He'd stayed out of it, not being particularly sure himself he didn't want to throw out useless opinions. The silence seemed to come out of nowhere. His entire group turned his way and one lone voice asked, "Well? What are we going to do?"

He stared back, frozen in place. He'd never made true choices! Only provided direction, discipline... Frightened, he shook his head. There was no way he could tell them that he knew no better then the smallest of cubs, but he had to say something. Any excuse to put it off.

"Stay here tonight," he'd hesitated too much in speaking and before he could speak again the group fell back into squabbling. That night, he barely slept, staying away from the main group. It wasn't until the sun broke over the horizon that the answer came to him.

A vision. A rare, but powerful experience. Across the river and through the vast plains they would find not only water but a pride, strong and numerous. They had a king. A real king, not some fish out of water like himself. They would go there, and they would thrive.

There was no doubt, no hesitation when he told them of his plan. They questioned him, naturally, both of the other plans offered had been far safer. Few wanted to take the risk. In the end his passion convinced them and they followed him onwards.

After this point he was no longer able to pretend that he was only a tag along in this group. When they brought down a kill it was his victory. When they failed, he shouldered the blame. Fearful of causing schisms he tried to avoid playing favorites and despite his best intentions nearly always came down on Zene the hardest.

As they neared their destination his dreams turned to nightmares and he could barely sleep for fear that the ever following eyes would return. Afraid of that haunting cackle. While he'd heard hyenas before the cackling in his dreams was something far removed from that waking experience and never during their journey would those two thoughts connect.

At first he passed it off on stress. He was tired. The group was growing weak, hungry, and worst of all Zene was as distant as she'd been on the day they'd met.

For a short while he thought of leaving them there and running. They would have their food, their water. Every need they complained so sorely of lacking now. Meanwhile, he would be far away from his nightmares... He was certain this feeling of dread would never leave him until he was away from this place. But his thoughts inevitably fell on the youngest and he knew that the shame of abandoning them would be one he would never be able to shake.

There was a future there. For all of them. With so many already living in the pride they would all be able to find mates. Raise families. With so many they would be protected, their cubs would be protected. He knew that if a time came when he was needed that he would fight, if only for these few.

But maybe... maybe he was being silly. It was just stress.

Applying for: Ubongo
Player of Ubongo: Christopher Johnson

He knew when they were born that they would break his heart. Two pups were unlucky. His old clan had known that. It was part of the reason he had left them, along with his mate. He didn't have much use for superstition.

If he had kept those bad-luck daughters in the clan, ignored their stares and whispers, Kosi would live.

If he had been there, if he had seen the lion, Ubongo would have thrown himself into its jaws to save Kosi. Now the news of her death was like word from a distant country. Kosi could not be dead. What of her mate, what of her pups? Kosi could not die and leave her own unlucky pair of pups behind. If he could only find someone in charge and explain it to them, surely they would fix this.

Ubongo could find nothing to say. He felt small, withered, as he stood before Mafuu. The rogue lands had taken his mate from him long ago, and now they had gobbled up his daughter. It didn't seem right. When his mate had died, it had just been the two of them and the pups. Five adult hyenas - him, his girls, and their mates - should be safe.

"Kosi," Ubongo said at last, his voice hardly more than a whisper. The grief had not hit him yet. It would not for several days. The loss of a daughter was too enormous, too bitter a thing to be swallowed all at once. What he did feel was rage. It was born fully fledged, driving away the feeling of stupid emptiness that had paralyzed him. One of those big cats had killed poor little Kosi. He and his family must be strong, then, as strong as lions and as many as a lion's teeth. He would find fierce brothers and sisters for his grandpups. No lions would catch them alone.

Applying for: Zimwi
Player of Zimwi: Christopher Johnson

She saw the land open up like a flower, the rolling savannah its petals. And her eyes moved over it like the rain. Herds, grazing in peace, flicked nervous ears as her gaze passed them. They could feel her, yes, they could feel Zimwi. Below her red snakes cut through the grassland. They zigged and zagged, crossing each others' paths to create brilliant geometric shapes that Zimwi noted dispassionately. Where they left their lines of fire the grassland fell away bit by bit, dropping into nothingness without a sound. The snakes sped up, overtaking her and moving on to the horizon, cutting apart the landscape as they went until Zimwi was left floating alone in blackness starred by the strange glowing patterns the snakes had left.

No, not quite alone. There was one with her, running always just before her. Just out of reach.

She flexed her muscles, trying to catch up with him, but she was nothing but eyes in this place. So she watched him go, noting how tall he was now, and how lovely his pale red fur was. He made no sound - he never did, not since the lion had torn his throat out all those years ago - but the echoes of his laughter rang in her memory.

And then he was dust among the strange shapes. The darkness retreated. Zimwi opened her eyes. The geometric patterns were still there, overlaid on reality, slowly sparkling into nothing. She had perhaps a few seconds of rational thought before the headache struck her.

She let out a ragged snarl at the pain and the frustration of losing sight of him once more. Swaying slightly, Zimwi rose to her paws. "More."

Her acolyte peered over at her. The crude spiral she had carved into his face was going bad. The swollen flesh pulled at his lips, tugging them into a crazed half-grin. "You're weak," he said fretfully.

"I had a vision," Zimwi said, ignoring his words. "The land will be covered in darkness, and the herds will go into nothingness. This will be." The acolyte was cowering back from her, his eyes rolling. "This will be unless I see another path for us. Now give me more." Speaking hurt. Every word, every sound, was a claw sunk deep in her brain, just behind her left eyesocket. It was an unfortunate necessity.

Zimwi lay down again as the acolyte gingerly dragged the turtle-shell bowl to her. She dipped her tongue into the bitter paste it held, reaching out one paw and laying it on the tiny skull she always kept at her side. It fit wholly under her paw. It was a pup's skull, the only one she had ever borne. He had been nameless when the lion killed him, less than two months old. Zimwi had wanted to wait, to see what the true name of his spirit was. If she caught up with him this time she would ask him.

Applying for: Ubavu
Player of Ubavu: [Eskimo]
You will gain ownership of both the birds.

One of your birds returned injured to you. You suspect someone in the group did it, but you have no proof. What do you do? What are your thoughts about this, and how do you comfort your bird? (You have complete control over his two birds)

----

Still and quiet was the humid afternoon until the faint sound of a "caw" interrupted the silence.

Ubvau lifted his head and listened. He knew the voice of Korofi well, and she sounded distressed. Teeth clenching in concentration, the male eased his ears forward until they found the direction of his avian companion's calls. A black dot in the sky signaled the raven's arrival, and the male watched it intently as it grew larger and larger. There was a shuffling beside of the hyena, but he didn't have to look down--he knew Hemea was there.

"She's hurt," the vulture remarked. Ubavu narrowed his eyes. He felt dizzy.

Just a few moments later, the raven was mere feet away, but hobbled in mid-air and fell the last few feet to the ground. Ubavu was at her side in an instant, a frenzy of concern and confusion. Blood streaked the female's tail. She stood up with a shake of her feathers and clacked her beak. Her eyes were wide and the muscles in her wings flexed. Ubavu hushed her and prodded her wing with his nose, doing his best to calm her.

"What happened?" His wild eyes were fixed on the blood, but there wasn't much. Still, there was enough to fill his stomach with dread at the thought of losing one of his only friends--one of the only ones who understood him. Birds were the only ones...

"I don't know," Korofi said heavily, still catching her breath. "First--" she inhaled, wincing.

"Oh, come on, Korofi, it isn't that bad," Hemea cut in. Korofi shot him a look.

"As I was saying," she continued, "first, I felt something grab me by the tail--like a bite." Ubavu leaned closer, brows knitting upwards. "So I took off. Something tried to swat me down, hit my wing, but I got out of there."

"Who?" Ubavu pressed urgently.

"I don't know! By the time I got high enough that I felt all right, whoever attacked me was gone."

Hemea sighed, clearly thinking he could've done better had he been the victim.

Ubavu regarded the raven intently, gaze trembling and teeth clenched. His eyes felt hot. Hemea sighed again, saying, "Oh, Ubavu, really."

"I can't help it!" Ubavu seethed, claws digging into the gray earth. "I don't know why they would do this. I thought if I just kept my head down, then..." He looked to the raven.

Korofi fluttered onto the hyena's back and gave him a reassuring peck. "I'm all right, kiddo, I just need a rest is all."

"Could've fooled me..." Hemea murmured. Korofi ignored him.

"I'll find out who did this," Ubavu said quietly, beginning to walk. He wanted to get away from that spot as quickly as possible. It stank of his beloved bird's blood. He never, ever wanted to smell that scent again, ever. "I'll find out, don't worry. We know it was them, we just have to find out which one."

"Honestly, Ubavu. You speak as if you aren't one of them. You're in their pack, aren't you?" Hemea chided calmly.

"You know he doesn't feel that way, Hemmy." Korofi chimed. "He wants to be a bird...remember?"

"Right--yes, of course," Hemea agreed hastily. "And he will be. I just meant that...right now, he is a part of this pack since he can't be a part of a flock, and he should act like it. Especially now. So he can gather information..."

"Right," Ubavu growled, picking up his pace. Korofi bobbed with each step, and Hemea glided close above them. The male's eyes narrowed and he seemed to lose focus, though his steps were sure-footed. He'd find out who did it, no matter the cost. No one hurt his friends--his guardians--his birds...no one.

A glimmer of wings sent Ubavu's eyes upward, and he watched a flock of birds move across the sky. His heart fluttered. He clenched his teeth hard, skull shaking at the force.

He'd be able to meet those birds one day soon...he'd meet all kinds of birds...every bird he could find. He'd meet them ant they'd be his friends. They'd listen to him. And they'd talk. And they'd all fly away together. He would fly. He would be up there with them and be a part of their flock. He would never be alone. He'd be with them. They would all fly. He would fly away...

One day, he would fly far away.

You were the one that found your sister Kosi's dead body. The proof of a lion being at fault was everywhere; the hair, the smell, the deep, large paw prints in the dirt. What was your first reaction in seeing this?

----

Mafuu's muzzle twisted in a strange sneer of disbelief. Her entire face twisted, contorting into an expression she had never experienced.

Her head felt full and empty at the same time. Her heart felt cold, and for a split second of a moment amidst the sheer horror and surreality of what lay before her eyes, she wondered if she was going to die.

It wasn't real.

"..." The hyena opened her mouth to say her sister's name, but only a shudder of a breath came out. She wanted to move forward, but her legs felt rooted into the ground.

It wasn't real.

She had just been there. Kosi had just been there. Now she wasn't. No...it wasn't possible. How could something like this happen? How could it be real? It was fake. It was a nightmare. It wasn't real. Something like that just wasn't possible. Not her sister. It wasn't real. It just resembled her sister. It couldn't be her. That mangled body...

The strong smell of her sister's blood and lion musk choked Mafuu and she gagged, thick saliva spilling out of her shuddering maw.

It was real.

Mafuu stepped forward once. Then again, stepping into a lion's bloodied paw print. She moved slowly until she stood as close to her sister as she dared. Her head felt like it wasn't attached to her body--it was floating away. It had floated away a long time ago. She didn't have a head anymore. Her heart was too cold to be there--it was gone, too. She choked and gagged silently once more. She stepped closer and stopped.

Mafuu looked down and met her sister's blank eyes.

She was dead...

She was dead...

She was dead...

She was dead...

She was dead...

She was dead...

Mafuu was going to slaughter every lion she could find.
