Brisk Ballad Gold n Oranges We were given our violins to borrow for the school year in fourth grade, I'm sure our parents had to sign something agreeing to pay if we lost them (I broke the neck off mine..oops) No music for the next five years... We were allowed to borrow from the school again in high school so I borrowed a trumpet, returned it for a flute and from sophomore year on we had to rent our instruments at $50 a year... same with sports equipment but that cost more ($200 for track). The year after I graduated the music program was cut entirely at my high school. I bought my own flute from a pawn shop and now I'm in one of the worlds largest adults-only marching bands... here we are (it's a youtube vid). Oh lord, thats crazy!! I always hate hearing about schools getting their music programs cut! :c Its so sad knowing that some kids at that school won't be learning music at their school :c. But that vid looks awesome! :3
The first year there was no music program the members of the marching band that were left without the music program marched in our community parade in the bright yellow and black uniforms with their faces painted black carrying signs thanking the district for taking away music from the entire community (usually at least one school in the 'cluster' has music no one out here did at the time). Instead of the big banner with the school name two students carried cardboard tombstones that said "RIP RHS MUSIC" I guess a math teacher that knows how to play drums and guitar took on a volunteer 7-am music program that offers no credits or extracurricular-type acknowledgment so there was some sort of music program here.
I love the big band I'm in now. When we practice marching we essentially chase our tails around a track, there's about a 6-ft gap between the starting line and the final line (which wasn't shown in the video). The directors stand on risers in the middle of the football field with loud speakers and correct us as we go.
BAH! I could band-geek-out all day though... I'll stop talking now. sweatdrop
