Zefal smiled at the other two pups. He was definitely bigger than them and far more experienced. A few extra centuries of life did that to a wolf whether they were permanently stuck as a pup or not. The orange, winged pup was actually almost as big as the adults and Vera had taught him a little bit about hunting. He left the two to play and wandered around the clearing, sniffing for rabbits or ground squirrels. If Eiwen and Meena were gonna take so long, why not give this a try?
Oliver stopped when Zef trotted away. "What, aren't we having fun?" He whimpered and his tail fell.
"Shh! I'm going to see if I can catch something for us!"
Oliver's ears stood up and his tail wagged excitedly. "Awesome!" He yipped happily and then ran back to n** at Ginger's ear, having lost his larger playmate and chew toy for the time being.
Zef smiled and the put his nose back to the ground, tail wagging slightly. He thought he smelled something rodenty and pranced towards a tree hopeful. A squirrel was pondering a nut it had in its paws and had its back to the wolf pup. The squirrel was on a low brancg but was still pretty high for a normal leap, but Zefal wasn't a normal pup either.
He crouched silently with his wings at the ready and when the squirrel seemed to notice him he sprang up and opened his wings in a woosh of feathers and updraft. He snapped his jaws on the squirrel's tail and the critter pulled away so that it's fuzzy tail came right off! Zef spit out the fuzz and snapped again as it tried to hop away with his paw coming down on it's back, crushing its spine. Even if his jaws missed their target, he still got the meal.
The dead squirrel fell out of the tree and Zef lept out of the tree and caught himself with his flapping wings to cushion the fall. The pup's wings weren't anything great, having not fully grown in but they'd done their best today! He grinned and picked up the rodent in his mouth, trotting back to the other two with his prize.
