(No snow in our part of the country, it's actually starting to warm up. But I wouldn't rule out snow in April, even.)

"Mm hmm." Karissa didn't know how to respond to the pleasantries.

Rachel raised an eyebrow at Karissa, but said nothing.

Karissa noticed Rachel's questioning look. "Sorry, it's just hard to...get used to everything again." She hugged her legs closer to herself, in imitation of being cold, but she was feeling rather sad again.  

[Arriana_lynn]

"Are you ok, Karissa? We're here for you, no matter what. If you need to talk, tell us, we'll listen. It's hard to carry some things on your own" Arianna said, just wanting her friend to feel better again.

Rachel put her hand on Karissa's shoulder, smiling in agreement. For some reason, she couldn't think of anything to say, but for once, she didn't think she needed to.

They stayed like that, for a while - silent - and Karissa felt herself calming down in the presence of her friends. But their care and worry had two effects on her - at the same time, she also felt immensely guilty. They still offered her their loyalty, but they didn't know what she had done. Finally she could bear it no longer, and she blurted out, "It was my dad."

"Ahhh." Said Rachel, without much emotion. "I must assume there was a good reason, because if there weren't, there are plenty of other humans." She said, smiling slightly.

Karissa turned sharply to Rachel. "That's the problem. There was no reason, I just - and - then he was dead."  

[Arriana_lynn]

"What was he like? There might be an underlying reason for doing it" Arianna offered, putting a comforting hand on her friends shoulder.

Rachel shrugged. "Well, I'm not one to judge."  

[Arriana_lynn]

"I'm not judging anybody, I'm just curious" Arianna explained.

"My dad didn't deserve to die," Karissa said woodenly. "I lost control. It was my fault."  

[Arriana_lynn]

"Karissa, we all make mistakes. When I was a newborn I killed my best friend. I've never told anyone that. She didn't deserve to die, but like you I lost control. Karissa, you are not to blame" Arianna said, hugging her friend, surprising herself when she brought up her friends murder.

Rachel smiled gently. "I can't remember my family that well. The only thing thats really crystal clear for me is my 14th birthday party. That was right before we were moved to the camps." Now that the were reminiscing, she couldn't help but join. "At least you got closure."

"I'm going to remember what I did for the rest of my existence. Not exactly what I'd call the best 'closure'." Karissa's tone was scathing, but mostly her anger was directed at herself.
