✖✖- - -Nodding in acknowledgement, Kas didn't expect otherwise. He had guessed right, then, that she had a standard Pureblood upbringing. Unfortunately, that would also have included some prejudices.
"A blessing, then," he remarked, noting the way her hand drifted without her notice to touch her neck. Continuing, he picked up where he left off. "Aiming for Slytherin as well, then?"
Hopefully it would be a good crop that landed in Slytherin this year. If it was to be full of mini-bigots, he would probably end up living in the kitchens as it was.
.... but I willd e f e n d to my D E A T H your right to say it.
Catharine snorted, "No, I'm handing it to you before we enter the Castle. You're mad if you think I'm going to hand this thing to you in front of everyone in the Great Hall. Being sorted will be bad enough."
She shook her head at the imagine of her trying to discreetly hand back David's cloak in the middle of the Great Hall. She gave an internal shudder. Then turned to watch the exchange between Ellie and Kas. For a moment she mere watched, like a spectator at a sport. Then she decided she might as well join in.
"Also don't worry, we only start talking family when we're lost for subject, she said leaning back. Again she wondered when they would get moving. This was taking for bloody ever.
oooPiera was sitting quietly at the very back of the boat, holding the lantern aloft so that they could see, though there wasn't much to see other than the top of the Black Lake, which looked black indeed. Her dual colored eyes were wide as she tried to take in everything that she saw. Though she was beginning to get distracted as the other first years in her boat talked amongst themselves.
She just listened and glanced at them most of the time. It was interesting to hear about the other's family lives. But she didn't have much for comparison. Her father had only explained a little before she came. The girl kind of wanted to join in on the conversation, but she felt too shy. Even though they were all in the same year, they all looked older than her!
So she simply transferred the lantern from her left to right hand while simultaneously shifting her robes as she attempted to stand a little. She was sitting on the edge of the back of the boat and it was starting to hurt her bottom. But little did she know that she had been standing on the hem of her robes and caused herself to sit roughly down, rocking the boat and almost causing her to fall back into the water.
"Eeek! Ah..." She blinked several times as she put a hand over her heart in a fruitless attempt to stop it racing before she looked up at the others and blushed in embarrassment."S-Sorry..." Piera whispered in apology.

Catharine had like to consider herself observant, even keen eyed where other failed. It might be arrogance, but she was certain of herself in most of herself. So when the boat had begun to rock, she had been shocked that when she had turned to find the source, it hadn't been one of the mystical merfolk questioning their appearance. Rather a girl. Who had apparently been so quiet, she had blended into the shadows.
Now, that is talent. . . to even be missed by me, she thought as she stared at the girl. Then gave the girl a half smirk saying, "Looks like you've nearly taken a tumble. Alright?"
─────────────────────────────────────────────────── "Yes, that or Ravenclaw. Which house are you hoping for?" Ellie asked. She knew she would fit in better in Slytherin as Ravenclaw wasn't as known for their views on muggles. But the sorting hat, despite how embarrassing it would be, could see into parts of your subconscious mind that could help sort you into the best house, so although she might lean towards Slytherin, it was up to the raggedy hat. ───────────────────────────────────────────────────
✖✖- - -"I'm not hoping for a house, but based on my opinion of myself, I'd think it Slytherin for myself as well," he answered, slightly distracted as well. "It may be different. No one can really sa- - -"
The sudden rock of the boat cut off his words as Kas quickly gripped the rail to steady himself. What could that have been? Peering over at the back of the boat, he followed Catharine's line of sight- - - she had been the first to notice, observant girl that she was- - - and curious eyes found the form of another girl their age, hunched, embarrassed and more than a little shocked. Raising a brow, he shot an amused smile at the person. Impressive. She was invisible.
What was she doing there?
.... but I willd e f e n d to my D E A T H your right to say it.

And it looks like we had an eevesdroper who almost fell in.
David glanced back to see the girl who blended in with the darkness and shook his head and returned his attention to his own boat mates. "I am hoping for Ravenclaw but luck will probably have me in Slytherin. My mother the whole summer has been dropping hints on how good I would look in green," He answered with a smile.
He glanced over at Catharine and said, "And about the cloak I could find way worse ways to embarrass you in front of everyone. Admitting you borrowed a cloak because you were cold isn't what I would call 'embarrassing' but it is up to you."

David's comments made her turn, slowly, to stare at him. She raised her eyebrows in question before replying, "Lets hope you don't find those 'worst ways' it might not turn out as you'd expect."
"As it stands, I don't want to be fumbling around with getting your cloak off as I try to hand it back to you as I walk into the Great Hall. With my luck and grace, I'd trip and cause the whole lot of us to crash to the ground," she said shifting the cloak on her shoulders. She would loath to give up while they were still near the lake, but once they stepped foot into that Castle it was coming off. She'd rather trip going in to the Castle, than trip in front of the whole school. She shuddered at the thought of tripping before all those eyes and then worst causing others to fall around her. People would think she's a duffer, which would only make things worst if she was sorted in Hufflepuff.
Like it's be insulting to send me to the House because I'd confirm the whole Hufflepuff duffer thing. Merlin's beard the boy wants to end my social life before I get the chance to start one!, she thought and shook her head sadly. Then after half a second of thought added, "Now, I'm not saying I agree that your mother about you and Slytherin. It's possible you won't go there, but that doesn't mean you won't look good in green. I think..."
She leaned back a bit and looked him over comically, "You'd look lovely in green. It'd bring out your complexion.
Personally, she continued, "I don't care where I go. So long as my House doesn't mind what Houses' my friends are in. Being nosy is one thing, trying to dictate whom you can be friends with is another."
Then slowly she turned to looked back at the girl in the shadows. Raising an eyebrow, she wondered if it'd be rude to ask her what House she thought she'd get into. Then she figured it would be ruder not to ask and just ignore her, plus she didn't like the girl lurking there in the shadows. It would be best to draw her out. Putting on a what she hoped was a warm smile, she said, "If you want you can join us. You don't have to huddle there like a...vine, yeah lets go with that. What House do you think you'll be in?" Jason was happy that he had already met some people. The last thing he wanted was to be left out. "I'm a pureblood too, though only my dad went to Hogwarts. My mum's from Sweden and she went to Durmstrang" he said. "Durmstrang is another Wizarding school." he added thinking that Alexander probably did not know what it was. Staring at the castle he tried to remember what his dad had told him. "Well, we'll be going to the sorting ceremony straight away, I think. They'll sort us into our houses and then we'll get to eat loads of delicious food. My dad always said that the food was the best at Hogwarts. I mean besides all the learning." he smiled and paused for a moment. "So what subjects are you most exited about? I already know how to fly, so I think Defence Agains the Dark arts is gonna be the coolest." he stopped himself as he realized he was about to start babbling. He had been told quite a few times that he should let others talk too, and he didn't want to come off as inconsiderate.

When the other boy spoke up, Alex was grateful. He finally had a sense of direction, and (sort of) knew what was to happen next. Defense Against the Dark Arts was a foreign concept to him, but he figured it was probably exactly what it sounded like. Dark Arts? In this world was there really and evil that needed to be countered with defense? The thought was sort of intimidating to Alex but enthralling at the same time. His hand grasped his wand inside his robes, and he wondered what spells and enchantments he'd learn to perform. The possibilities were endless. So... what are the houses? Alex had heard people talking about the houses before, but he wasn't one to eavesdrop and so he'd left it alone. Sorting people? It was so odd to think about. How could they sort people into categories? The houses had to be aligned with some set of attributes or something, for them to be able to divide students into four groups. Alex hoped it wasn't an elitist thing, with any one group being better than the others. As long as the groups were equal, he wouldn't mind any one of them. Hearing the low rumbling of his stomach, Alexander looked back up at the castle. The food that Jason spoke of sounded particularly nice right about now. I do hope we get a move on soon, else I may just keel over right here and now. Impatience started to sink in. The boy was eager to move on from these boats and be sorted, whatever that meant. He was tired of the now, and though he was enjoying the company of the nice people in the boat, he didn't want to get too attached if they were to be separated into different groups.
Jason figured it had to be difficult not knowing much of the Wizarding world. Everything about Hogwarts and the houses had always been familiar to him. His dad had always been good at telling stories and his stories about Hogwarts had always been Jasons' favourites. "Well, there is Gryffindoor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin. I hope to be in Gryffindoor, it's for the brave and daring." he said with a big smile. "Slytherin on the other hand usually attracts bad people. I wouldn't want to be in Slytherin." he made a face. "Though, I guess not all Slytherins are bad." he added trying to reassure Alexander that it was no big deal if he ended up there. "Ravenclaw is basically for the smart and clever, my dad was in Ravenclaw. And Hufflepuff... I don't really know much about it." he shrugged. "Which house do you think you'll get sorted into?"

The scary thing is Mum really would enjoy that type of project.
"You should come over to my place this summer. Mum can teach you etiquette and grace," David chuckled picturing them all falling like dominos. "She does excel at it... I think her family made her take etiquette classes as a child. Besides it would be good for her to have a pet project... I mean she has her art, but still..."
"And I'd think I would look just as good in blue," David continued. "Anyways, I got my mother's coloring: it wouldn't be surprising green might suit me." He didn't want to think about it but he got some other Slytherin traits like his cunning and ability to play the game from his parents too.
He smiled as Catharine invited their eavesdropper to join the conversation with a question. She really was a kind a person.
Catharine rolled her at first, but when David had said 'pet project' she had snapped her head to him so fast she had pain shot through it. Clasping her hand to it, she tried to massage the pain out of it. She couldn't get rid of it completely, but she once she got the worst out she turned back to David, though more slowly this time.
"Pet project? Do I look like a doll? she asked though she didn't sound completely outraged. Which she wasn't. Part of her was amazed that David had pretty much missed her dig at him. That or like other times like these had completely ignored it. So much for a good listener. More like selective hearer, she thought as she said, "I'd step on your toes if we weren't in this old boat. I'm worried I'd send my food through the bottom which would...um greatly delay out sorting, but know that I'll wait to have my chance. No one gets off calling me a pet anything."
She ended with a great sniff of prudishness and held her nose a aloof. Though the idea of getting lessons. Well, if she did ever meet her father's family. She did want to be prepared and do her best. She comforted with herself as she was, but they'd probably expect something more from her. For her to be properly pureblood trained or something. Perhaps she should consider the idea. But another time, I've gotta get through this year first, she thought again glancing around. "Ruddy hell, when will we get moving I want this trip over with so I can starting being worried about the sorting."

Ah, bloody Hell.
David's eyes widened at Catharine's wrath and he realized he had gotten too comfortable. He never-or almost never- made a gaff with words. He held up his hands and took a deep calming breath as she railed on him.
Finally he took a deep breath and said, "Look I didn't mean offense. I just meant... Bloody Hell, don't freak out, okay? It's not like that. I mean a 'pet project' is any project your highly invested in, right? You could say my studying is my 'pet project' even."
Catharine gave David side eye for a moment, before given him the full skeptical look. Pursed lips, raised eye brows over narrowed silvered eyes, it was a look she had perfected over the years with teachers' that had assured her that this year she wouldn't get teased. Then sighed through her nose before saying, "I'm not a pet project, highly invest or otherwise. I'd be a student or a pupil of your mother etiquette. I've been enough people's 'project's to last me a life time.
Minus that, I'm not freaking out. Ruddy hell, I'm barely angry," she said and then paused. She rubbed her arms under the cloak looking down briefly before saying in a small voice she hoped only David could hear, "Trust me, you'd know...if I had. I personally hate my temper, so I'll work to make sure you never do."
"Now then don't worry. You didn't offend me. . .too much," she said in a louder and lighter tone. Then she nudged him in the shoulder with her own and gave him small smile. "Not to mention that etiquette and what 'grace' lessons might be useful. Never know when you'll need to be light on your feet and be able to tell which spoon to use at a fancy dinner."
