Something kind of interesting caught my eye- some people say they "use" gods, it always strikes me as really odd.

Maybe they're chaos magicians? At least, if my understanding of chaos magic is correct, a chaos magician chooses to believe in Aphrodite, say, for the duration of a ritual to attract love, but only for the duration of that ritual, so in a sense wouldn't they be using Aphrodite? 'Course, my knowledge of how chaos magic works is fuzzy, at best.
Unless I'm wrong, I know very very little about chaos magicians, I thought they didn't work with the gods. And that if they did it were the "evil" deities like Set or Anpu or Hades.

Well, assuming Wikipedia can be believed, chaos magicians use belief as a tool, so if they're going to use belief in a God for one of their rituals, wouldn't it make sense to choose the God most appropriate to the purpose of the ritual? But chaos magic isn't a religion, so I imagine how much use a chaos magician makes of Gods is entirely up to the chaos magician in question. I've never heard anything about a preference for "evil" Deities, though.

Well, I wouldn't expect a God or Goddess to take kindly to that, either. And it's certainly not something I'm planning to try. I, personally, can't imagine using a God for anything; I don't think They work that way. I'm just saying that's the one case I can think of where talking about using a God would make some kind of sense.

That makes sense- though I got the impression the person who sparked the idea isn't a chaos mage. sweatdrop

In Vodou there's a saying "You feed the Loa, the Loa feed you."
Working with some spirits I can see the idea being on par- but with other gods, not so much, but I do like your example.

I guess I think that if gods are going to be "used" like tools- you might as well skip using someone and skip to using something.

Well like I said. I know very little about them. That was just my thoughts with the very little I had seen about them and its was years and years ago. I remember there was one group I had run into somewhere that only worshipped "evil" deities. And they had listed Anpu and Hades.

Truth be told, I don't know much about them, either, so I could be entirely wrong. sweatdrop I did take a very brief look at chaos magic a couple months ago, but only enough to decide that their attitude towards belief didn't appeal to me.

For Chaos magicians and others you're not supposed to use them. The various deities whether they be archtypes or not are to be treated with respect. By ordering them around and telling them to do thinks, you're just ASKING for them to hurt you :s It's looked down by a few practitioners including Magus Tsirk Tsuej, who actually writes against this in his Demonic Bible. I think the Lesser Key of Solomon also mentions this warning as well I believe.

Going based off of memory the RHP deals with things like morality, goodness blah blah blah. LHP is more umm...I forget xDDD

I'll look it up tomorrow morning.
That still to me sounds like the agruement between being a white witch or a black witch. So it goes back to what's moral for one may not be moral for the next.
Well the problem with black or white is that magic in of itself does not have a color code. It is all dependent to what you're using it for like any tool out there.
I know. I only brought it up because this whole land hand right hand crap to me is the same as calling a person evil because they have slightly different morals than you.

Say like I have a Native American and a Kemetic. To the Native American the Kemetic could be on the left hand path because animal products are taboo and the Native Americans used every single part of the animal.
Not really.

The Right Hand Path more so goes with social conventions and avoids taboos, they divide concepts into mind body soul and adhere to a very specific moral code. Whereas LHP ignores the status quo, indulges in sexuality, and question morals and dogma. Satanism basically does all the things in the LHP. Many forms of the Neo Pagan religions follow the RHP versus the LHP. The LHP is often looked down upon as well as Satanism. The terms actually came from a form of Hindusim and are used to describe Western philosophies.
Social morals come from the dominating religion in the area though.
Not really. Social morals can come from your family members, what you see on tv, what you read, teachers, etc.

My morals are slightly different than other people within society. Hell they're extremely twisted by societies standards.

Look back at when this nation was first starting out. Their social morals came from the church. As years went by the church started becoming lax and people were also moving away from the church.

My mythology teacher a couple years ago did a little survey in his classes on peoples' religions. There was maybe 1 or 2 true Christians.

But if you want to get technical about it you can look at it like this:
If the LHP is going against social normals than it can be taken two different ways. 1) Looking at it that this nation is "truely"(since its supposed to have religious tolerence but doesn't unless you're Christian, Muslim, or Jewish) a Christian nation then any religious person that isn't in one of the major 3 religions or agnostic person would be on the LHP. And 2) Taking it from what you see on TV any religious person at all would be on the LHP out of the sheir fact that barely anything you see in the mainstream media anymore has something to do with religion.

The morals of the country did not come from the Church. The country didn't become a country since 1787. Anything prior to that does not ******** matter since we were ******** COLONIES. In 1797, the Treaty of Tripoli established that we were a Secular nation and will remain as such. Just because every so often we get a moron in the office that brings out the religious right does NOT change the FACT that this country HAS BEEN secular and will FOREVER remain that way. Regardless of what some IGNORANT ILLITERATE ******** MORONS SAY! ******** I've been living in Texas too long.

Going against social morals means having sex in your rituals, not worshiping a deity, or worshiping a deity that's not to be desired like Baal, or Belial or Amon or Berith, etc. Versus the ones that are looked as desirable in the community like Isis, Freyja, etc. Remember outside of Christianity, that other religions have their own mini-socieities and cultures. When I'm talking about the difference of LHP and RHP I'm speaking within the pagan community itself. Christianity is NOT a factor. So in the pagan community RHP refers to mainstream religions like Hellenism, Kemeticism, Asatru, etc. And LHP refers to the things that go against the hippie, whitelight bullshit we've been forcefed since the 1950's.

I don't understand that whole thing either. I'm of the opinion that witchcraft/magic can't be labled like that. It's more like a:

"Hey! I just did this spell!"

"O.o...well that was stupid." OR "Oh that's fantastic!"

. . .

Just because there's more sex in the media does not mean that sex is widely accepted in Western socieity. If you have sex before marriage, then you're a whore. If you're pregnant at 14-17 then you're a slut.etc. Sex is still a taboo regardless of the media.

Considering that it actually originated from Hinduism and Hinduism has been around for ten thousand years...it's not a new thing. Especially since Blatvasky is the one who brought us the bastardized version of Karma, which then brought us the bastardized version of the Three Fold Law.
