well that's the part that makes sense. the yellow shape and green shape have a 3square/2square relationship that makes the gap. but the fact that no area has been lost creates the confusion XD |

The trick here is that the blue and red triangles have different side ratios, so they have different angles to the hypotenuse. The top 'side' of the big triangle isn't actually a straight line, and the triangle isn't a triangle. If you shaved the inequal top off of the bottom one, the shavings would fit into the missing square.
Tricky math! blaugh
These properties can carry over to all kinds of apparent optical illusions! ^_^ |
