How do you know yourself and what is the point? Really? Did you REALLY just ask those questions?! Ugh this just shows what a mess public education is these days, and society in general. If you know yourself then it's a lot harder for others to take advantage of you, or make a fool of you. Not to mention you will have goals and meaning in life as well. There are a lot of advantages to knowing one's self, which also includes maturity. You can know your own weaknesses and work to overcome them. There's a long list of reasons why you SHOULD get to know the truth of yourself, and how you work.

For instance, if you really knew yourself you would not have made yourself a fool by asking for examples on why you were a petulant child, you would have never asked that question as you would have known the answer. In fact chances are that if you knew yourself, then you wouldn't be such a petulant child, seeing as how you would have more maturity.

Well that much is true. That's why you should explore why you do what you do. Not to mention what you want to make a career of, and what you want out of life just in general. That's a rather good start I would say ninja

Besides, it also saves you money for college, because then you know what you want to major in. This stuff takes time and effort, but it's filled with a lot of rewards if you're dedicated to the understanding/mastery of Self.
