Sauron pushed himself up to his paws and shook his body, gathering as much Grass-type energy as he could. When he had enough, he used Giga Drain, looking to drain what little energy Golurk had left.

And down went Golurk, the Giga Drain taking away what little strength it had left but it did its job in weakening the threat that was Venusaur. Recalling Golurk the gym leader would not delay in sending out his final and most powerful Pokemon, his well known signature appearing from the Ultra Ball as it bounced off the ground.

"Exca!" The Subterrene Pokemon cried out as he appeared.

"This sun is too bright, me and my partner here are used to working in darker environments. Blot out that sun, use Sandstorm." Clay ordered.

With a quick spin Excadrill would conjure up a sandy twister around its body which would rapidly grow to consume the entire field, cancelling out the Sunny Day, the dried mud breaking up and becoming part of the Sandstorm as well. The painfully gritty sand particles didn't bother the mole at all but Sauron would have a different opinion.

I was very confused for a second when Excadrill came out but I quickly remembered that Clay was where the 4v4 matches were supposed to start. I was getting used to the 3v3 format, I guess. I grabbed Sauron's ball, thinking he'd faint to Sandstorm damage. However, thanks to not getting attacked while using what had to be Giga Drain judging by the energy exchange, Sauron had enough strength to endure the moving sand for a turn, at least. That said, Excadrill's Steel typing invalidated his Grass typing by removing type advantage. Though that wasn't to say Sauron was out of tricks.

"Alright, Sauron, we're going for broke. Shake this earth with the last of you strength and make your enemies tremble. Earthquake!"

Sauron, with just enough energy gained from the almost fainted Golurk to survive the Sandstorm and not faint, wobbled to his feet and put everything he had into manipulating the Ground-type energy in the earth at his feet, causing said energy to spread out to Excadrill and shake the ground violently via Earthquake. He did his best, but he wasn't going to last after this, regardless whether he fell to Excadrill's attack or the sandstorm.

Excadrill swayed and stumbled under the Earthquake and while Super Effective it wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been, Venusaur being mostly special inclined and this one on its last legs but still, that smarted. Noting that Sauron was definitely not going to survive the Sandstorm, and even if it did they were in a better position now to avoid a second Earthquake, Clay decided he would instead use this time to set the field for the final confrontation.

"You better bring out something good next, 'cause ole Clay is going to make you earn this badge. Excadrill, use Stealth Rock." The gym leader ordered.

With a nod the moll would scoop up chunks of the ground and begin to throw them all about, the chunks of rock remaining suspended in air after they reached a certain altitude. Excadrill before this feet until numerous rocks floated inside the Sandstorm all around the field, nowhere left to move without a rock nearby. With that done it fixed its gaze back at Venusaur, expecting it to tap out now as the Sandstorm racked its body, pondering what would come next.

I was a bit disappointed to see Excadrill shake off Sauron's Earthquake, but I knew Sauron was giving it his all. I recalled him just as Sandstorm was robbing him of his last sliver of health - trying to do an old friend a service. The appearance of Stealth Rock worried me, though - especially with Orion fainted, who could have repelled it. I couldn't rely on anyone else. This is what the match came to. Me and Clay with only one Pokemon left between us.

"Well, Clay, I've got good news and bad news. For you, I mean. Good news is that I don't have any special attackers left, so this last match should be a little bit closer to the kind of combat you prefer. Bad news is, my last Pokemon was raised from the egg to fight Gym Leaders. Show him what you got, Brunor!"

I let the ball fly, revealing my gym-breaker, Brunor. Said Gallade raised his guard the second he was released from his ball, but I wasn't going to have him just stand ready. "That Excadrill is all that stands between us and Driftveil Gym's Quake Badge. Give it all you've got, Brunor! Swords Dance!"

As soon as I said that, Brunor began an intricate dance routine designed to pump his muscles and rapidly improve his physical strength. Even with type advantage, we'd need all the help we could get against Clay's strongest.

Clay hummed to himself as Gallade appeared and the Stealth Rocks around the Pokemon slammed into it, taking a fraction of its health but not enough to stop it from proceeding with its empowering dance. A Fighting type was not what Clay was wanting to see but he had to deal with it and defend his gym the best he could.

"That's a right fine Pokemon you go there son, y'all should be proud." Clay agreed. "Mine ain't shabby either though. You got an advantage and a boost but we'll give it all we got and hope for the best in the name of Driftveil! Shadow Claw!" Clay ordered.

Finally utilizing its newfound speed in the Sandstorm via Sand Rush the Excadrill would kick off the ground and begin to spin around rapidly, gliding through the storm as if it were swimming, the gale carrying it towards Gallade at a rapid pace. However Excadrill maintained its distance as he passed by Gallade, stopping his rotation once parallel to the Psychic as he swiped his claw out at Gallade from a distance, a ghostly claw made from ethereal energy projecting from his own to reach out and rack across Gallade's body.

(If 1, Critical Hit.)

Take the hit, I thought, knowing Brunor would pick up on the mental command. I waited for Excadrill to draw close before giving my next order verbally just before Shadow Claw actually hit. 'Use Revenge!"

Bruno braced himself for Excadrill's attack, but let the move land. Then, before Excadrill could back up, he'd use the energy of the Ground-type's attack to form the energy for his attack before swinging at him with it.

If this were an anime this would be the part where time slowed down, Excadrill realizing in this brief moment that it made a mistake, a look of shock appearing on its face as the Revenge slowly built up. The next thing the mole or the gym leader knew an explosion of energy went off sending Excadrill flying across the field, hitting the dirt hard and rolling a few times. After the dust settled it was seen that Excadrill was knocked out cold. The battle was over.

"Whoo boy! That was a right fierce match partner!" Clay complimented Terashi as he recalled his Excadrill, then proceeding to walk across the field and approach the challenger. "Here you go boy, the Quake Badge. You sure did earn it!" Clay laughed as he handed Terashi the badge. "You sure gave us a run for our money, I reckon!"

I took my badge and shook Clay's hand in the same motion. "It was a close match. I'm glad our region has a Gym Leader as strong as you in it," I complimented him, meaning every word. My battle with him was certainly an improvement from some other Unovan Gym Leaders, even though his ace went down to a single move. But hey, using a super-effective move to empower Revenge, which itself was super-effective against Excadrill... I guess we must have overpowered him. I knew all of that going into the move, but... well, too late to complain now, especially with another badge to add to my collection.

As I made my way back to the entrance, Keiko was waiting for me. "That was crazy!" she cheered. "You took his ace down in one punch, man!"

"Yeah, that one surprised me a bit, even though I knew, for the most part, how effective that tactic would be," I admitted.

As Keiko continued cheering at how intense of a match that was, I focused on switching my team around for the next gym. Once that was done, I let Rala out of her ball, though my SNAG rang before I could tell her where to take us.

I took some time off from the badge run. The World Tournament had been called and I participated in that, though I didn't get very far because it was doubles, and not only was I not very familiar with that format, but the allies I got paired with weren't familiar with it either to say the least. Then I had to take a trip to the Isle of Armor after that, though once my business there was done, I had Rala take me to Mistrallion City.

It was a short trip from the Pokecenter in Mistrallion to the Gym there. We entered, then waited to be greeted. I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous, as my team was a bit lax in means of dealing with Flying-types. Rala and Brunor both had Electric-type moves, and there was Yuki, but other than that...

I couldn't help but feel a bit nervous, as my team was a bit lax in means of dealing with Flying-types. Rala and Brunor both had Electric-type moves, and there was Yuki, but other than that...

As soon as Ter entered the gym a rush of wind would grace him and his hair, rustling it, provided he didn't use gel or something. The gym guide would spot the trainer and greet him with a wave and a smile. "Yo, champ-in-the-making! Skyla is not only a Flying-type specialist but also an expert pilot! As you can see this gym also serves as a hangar! It's big enough for her birds to take flight and even comes installed with huge fans, that is it is also a wind tunnel so don't use any Pokemon that will be blown away easily!" The guide suggested Ter before stepping to the side and motioning ahead.

Terashi would see a staircase which led to a high platform which served as the gym's battlefield, a massive fan on the far back wall. A minute or two after Terashi took his place in the trainer box the gym leader the roof would open up slowly with little fanfare, letting in the outside elements, particularly the sun's warm rays, a beautiful clear day out. Once the roof ceased opening the Gym Leader would finally show herself, suddenly falling from the opening in the roof. Right before she hit the battlefield a Swoobat would swoop in and with its tail would grab Skyle, gently setting her on the ground before latching onto her extended arm, hanging upside-down.

"Greetings, challenger! Did you just fly in to our humble town? I hope you don't have jet lag because you and I are about to have some fun!" Skyla declared with a smile. A voice would then sound off from some speakers in the gym. "Welcome to Mistralton Gym, challenger Terashi! This will be a singles format battle with each trainer using four Pokemon each! Challenger may make the first move! Battle shall commence with your first command, challenger! Good luck!" The voice declared and from what Ter could see it was the voice of the gym's ref, the man sitting in a spectator's box far off to the side.

With a confident smile Skyla would wave her arm for Swoobat to let go, the bat doing as such and taking its place on the field, flapping its wings as it hovered in the air and waited to start the show.

I took a second to think about my next action. The pokemon she was starting with was Psychic/Flying. I could take advantage of the weaknesses that come with it being a Psychic-type and save Yuki for later, but I didn't have a lot of options for that. Then Kefka came to mind, but I didn't know if he'd be able to handle the wind.

"Let me test something first," I asked Skyla, letting Kefka out of his ball. The Klefki floated around a bit, as if getting used to the air in the arena. "Think you can handle battling in this?" I asked him. After another minute of adjusting to the wind, Kefka gave a chirp of approval. "Then start out with a Thunder Wave," I told him.

Kefka gave another approving chirp before focusing on Swoobat. He gathered Elecric-type energy in front of him, then shot it wide, letting the energy flow in Swoobat's direction. As it washed over the Heart Pokemon, it would find that movement was difficult for it, as it had been paralyzed.

The Thunder Wave would strike true, the heart-nosed bat letting out a feeble squeal as it could feel its body tense up, its muscles becoming tight. While her Pokemon seemed fairly stressed about this turn of events Skyla did not, in fact she seemed almost pleased. "That was smart, the classic tactic of crippling your foe right away and taking an early advantage. However let me show you how cunning me and my winged friends can be! Use Psycho Shift!" The gym leader commanded.

With a defiant cry Swoobat would give off a pulsating wave of purple energy. As the energy expanded outward from its body it would fade and reappear around Klefki, pulsating inward and into its body. As this occurred Swoobat would begin to feel more limber and normal again while Klefki would become tense as the paralysis was removed from Swoobat and given to Klefki.

(If 1 Swoobat is fully paralyzed and is unable to execute its move.)

Well, that was frustrating. Still, I doubted she had a way of undoing the next move I planned. I'd just have to have Kefka fight through the paralysis as I had no means of removing it mid-battle. "Alright, let's see you counter this. Kefka, use Imprison!"

Kefka stared at Swoobat as Psychic-type energy surged in his body. The Klefki would use that energy to form a seal on Swoobat, with the intention of preventing it from using any moves both it and Kefka knew. This would help prevent setups like Reflect/Light Screen as well as powerful moves like Psychic, though Kefka was resistant to Psychic-type energy as he was a Steel-type. Swoobat would still have access to some setup moves as their movesets weren't VERY similar.

"Ah, smart." Skyla commented as she watched the Imprison formed itself upon Swoobat, denying it access to its abilities of which they both shared, which was a fair few. "You clocked my Swoobat accurately, they species is noted for being more of a utility Pokemon to support the rest of the team, as is your Klefki. Kudos." The gym leader complimented Terashi and his decision.

"That said we still have other options. As a master of the sky I am accutely aware that sometimes the winds change directions and you must readjust your flight path. Now let's see how you handle some shifting winds...and temperature! Swoobat, Heat Wave!" Skyle commanded her bat. In that same moment the giant fan behind them slowed down.

With a shrill cry Swoobat would rise up into the air and once it reached a confident height it begin to flap its wings vigorously, creating a powerful gusts of wind which blew down upon Klefki. For a brief moment it just few like a Gust but rapidly the wind and surrounding air would become hot, very hot. The now searing winds would blow over Klefki and threaten it with Super Effective damage and perhaps even risk getting swept away in the gust.
PostPosted: Sun Apr 30, 2023 9:23 am

And here's where panic would set in. I was hoping I'd have another turn before Heat Wave came out, as it was the only move in Swoobat's arsenal (that I was aware of) that Kefka would be weak to. "Quick! Rainy Day!" As Swoobat reached the ceiling and charged Fire-type energy, Kefka charged water type energy and used Rainy Day. I hoped Swoobat's ascent would give Kefka time to get the move out, but the rain had only just started when Heat Wave hit, and as such, it did little to deter the Fire-type move. Kefka would indeed be blown back by the move, being thrown to the edge of the arena. However, through either luck or sheer determination, the Klefki held its place at the edge, and was not removed from the arena. After taking a moment to process the pain that move inflicted upon him, he would float back to my side, willing to continue the battle.
