Yea... Its impossible for them to have a socket, since the craft is only about 27 feet long, unlike the x-wing's 36.

How does the numbering system work anyway? Is it lower numbers that are superior, or was I wrong in my previous assumptions?

Not really. It's just a number, you're all part of a group, superiority goes by rank.
I remember in NJO, Luke was like Twin 10 for Twin Suns, and in Hardpoint he was like 5 or something.
And both times he was Leader, as well.

How squadron numbering works:
1, 4, 7 are the three leaders of respective groups 1, 2, and 3.
1 and two are usually the best pilots, with many times 3 either being a great pilot, or a fresh pilot.
4 is usually a leader in training, who is good at secondary objectives, such as air cover, with 5 and 6 being good pilots who just don't have the experience in leading.
Provided more than six pilots are needed, pilot 2 becomes leader of the second flight. Each fligh has six pilots, so leader takes the first, 2 takes the second.
If really that many are needed, then the leadership gets pretty tricky depending on stats and skills.
The only constant is that 11 and 12 are "lone wolves". 5 and 6 also are lone wolves, but only in a six fighter squadron when leader takes a diamond formation. 10 often times is the fourth man out when 12 are in the sky.
A lone wolf is not part of a group, often times taking point defense and/or really specific runs as a back door diversion.
Its so much easier if you got a picture, but I don't ave a scanner.
