Posting my poem here instead of the sallies.
Here's the poem:
As I walked in the garden of dreams
What do you think I saw?
A girl by a pond, all alone
Her face was red and raw
"Oh miss, what's this? What's going on?"
I asked her to reply
"I'm trying to be who I wanna be,
I don't wanna live a lie."
We sat side by side, just her and I
She started to explain
Just what had happened earlier
To cause her all this pain.
"Momma found out 'bout Chrissy...bout Chrissy and bout me.
We really love each other, why can't she let us be?
Momma says it's a sin, that I'm goin' to burn
She won't listen to me, she refuses to learn
I want to shake her, to make her understand
That I'm still her little girl, the only one in the land.
Not any more though, after what was said
She told me to git, that her daughter was dead
She slapped my face and I just ran away
I won't ever go back, not even for a day."
She put her face in her hands and she cried,
I put my arm around her and replied:
"People are weak, and sometimes are cruel
People are stubborn and people are fools
She doesn't understand the pain we receive
Day in and day out without any reprieve.
Afraid for our lives if we let it get out
In places where preachers hold most of the clout
Who preach fire and brimstone for people like us
When all that we want is a life free of fuss.
We aren’t any better, we aren’t any worse,
We aren’t mentally ill, and we’re not perverse.
All that we want is love and respect
And still there are those that protest and object.
Bound to the past, they refuse to see
How hurtful and wicked their ways can be.
Do not hate your mother. Perhaps in time
She’ll come around and see it’s no crime
That you love someone the same sex as you
And hopefully will have some empathy too.
In a world that is perfect, there wouldn’t be hate
No massive gap between gay and straight
People would be who they are, not who they should be
All people would love, care, be happy and free.
Not bound by restrictions like sex or like race
That’s the perfect world, but this one’s not the case.
We have friends and families and lovers and fighters
We have dancers and cooks and plumbers and writers.
My point is, my child, be true and be good
You’re not evil or bad, you’re just misunderstood.
If only people could understand this
Our unhappy lives would be turned into bliss.”
