Irony is loosely appropriate, but either way, the word used doesn't change the nature of the discussion, which all of us can easily infer from the first post.

Yes, I hate this hypocrisy.

Just recently, I was on MySpace and ran across a chain-letter. It was a "Hot Topic versus Hollister" chain (let's ignore the "Is Hot Topic actually goth?" question for now, this is just an example), in which you copy the list of previous signers, and add your name to one side or the other along with a comment.

The majority of the responses under the Hollister side? "I like Hollister because I like the clothes".

The majority of the responses under the Hot Topic side? "HOLLISTER ******** SUCKS. ALL PREPS DESERVE TO DIE. HOT TOPIC FOREVER."

This sort of thing is marking a major trend I've seen for a while now- a certain elitism amongst young, immature goths. While the goth culture has always been associated with a certain air of arrogance, the newest wave of young Hot Topic-weaned baby-bats seems heavily hostile to all outside their immediate interest. Maybe it's only a temporary trend; maybe it's driven by the goth culture itself, or perhaps by pressure within the media or by other subcultures. Who knows?

No matter the cause, the hostility is casting goth in the violent light it's fought so hard to escape post-Columbine.

I thought video games took the larger of the hits from Columbine?

Nether the less, I know exactly what you mean, it does seem to be a very recent thing, previously it was just the hardline punks that were the central aggressive force in alt. culture, but over the years, this sense of "your not one of us, so I'm gonna beat the piss out of ya." seems to have spread, I'll hold my hands up and say, metal culture is probably a big factor in that spread, with the metal of the late 80's early 90's focusing on being aggressive (Anthrax, Bizkit, Korn, Suicidal Tendencies, etc. (Yes, before you start, Korn and Bizkit used to be very good)) resulting in an increase of this whole aggressive alt. culture thing.

But the fact remains, that this is an increasing phenomenon (do do dododo) which is leading to more negative press, which leads to the culture becomming more insular and aggressive which will lead to even more bad press, such is a vicious circle, why do you think real metal (not like this Trivium bull) is almost all but gone.

I guess I was lucky, there was a neutral territory, so to speak, in my city. It was a coffee shop called Insomnia. There was drama, true, but you'd also commonly see tables of blended styles.

My issue is with people who do their best to live a stereotype, whether it be rapper, Goth, cowboy... if you like and desire to incorporate some of the style into your character, that's great. If you avoid doing what makes you happy because you judge it ill-befitting your style, you're only harming yourself.

I believe in the ideal of Equivalent Exchange-but on a more complex level.
if these younglings are hostile for no reason, than there is no exchange>however if they were wronged, then I believe they deserve to fight but only as much as they have been faught.

Also it depends on the number in the group, be it one or 100-what is given it must be equal to what is received less they have loose morals/standards.

yea, i can understand what you are saying, but still with that kind of elitism it makes us just as bad as them.

.. and yet you rag on about chavs so much.... we have more hypocrisy on isle 11 ma'am razz

Personally, I don't see myself as a tollerant being, therefore I eliminate these pesky moral questions.

The world is full of bitches, bastards and wankers, I am one of these, I can therefore hate anything I wish without any real problems with myself as mostly, the human race is a self serving selfish waste of blood and organs (yes, there are exceptions, and these few people are treated very nicely by Izzie). Basically, any one person has achived some form of cruelty to deserve you calling them any form of insult (unless they're Mother Theresa, you insult her and you're just a loser), so insult all and let the repercussions hit you in the a**, assholes! biggrin

I said in my first post, I freely admit I'm intolerant as I hate everyone and everything seems stupid to me. biggrin

Besides ragging on chavs doesn't count, their primates, not humans.

i find this pretty funny. tolerance is overrated. i hate a great deal of things, people, places, etc, and freely admit it. my philosophy is pretty much "I'm going to do what I want, and if you have an issue with it, ******** off."
so as for the morons, most of the kids in this cult aren't even real goths.

I agree...if people are hateful they could at least admit to it. Or if you're going to lie, stick to one story. That's less annoying than not being able to decide.

I'm tolerant of pretty much everyone...except people who pretend to be what they're not and people who get in your face about what you are.
