The Germans didn't talk about the war for the longest time. Kids who were born after the war couldn't get any information whatsoever from the older generation. It may have changed somewhat in recent years.

You have to remember, that after knowledge of the death camps was made public by the Allies, the Germans were deeply ashamed that such things could happen in their country.
