Alcmene's attention was focused more on the first one they came to, she didn't realize yet that there were more of them about. When they reached it, she went right up to it- now quite convinced that somehow a small mountain had moved. Or had lost small bits. Or- maybe it was a baby mountain! She never would have even thought of something like that if she hadn't been playing with some smaller cubs recently.
"What do you think it is?" she asked, glancing back at Fafnir.

He watched her approach it from where he was standing, quite content to let her take the lead in their current situation. He had actually sat down and was staring at the strange boulder when she turned back to look at him and ask what he thought it was. Given his vivid and wild imagination at times, that was probably more than she really wanted to know.
"Well," he said, tilting his head to the side so far that he looked rather like an owl with a cocked head, "it looks kind of like a giant turtle!" A grin spread across his face as he narrowed his eyes on all the rest of the boulders, then turned back to look at the one right in front of them. "What if they're ancient turtles that only come down out of the mountains every thousand years?" He nodded his head in a knowing manner, his grin fit to split his face nearly in two, and it was obvious he was having a great time with making up his tail. "I bet all that rumbling and shaking was them walking around."

"Turtle?" she repeated, glancing back at the boulder and jumping away as if suddenly noticing something that confirmed the idea. Though a little jumpy about the concept, she looked on curiously as he explained ancient turtles and used them to explain all the rumbling before. She walked around the boulder, looking for some indication that it was a turtle- and aside from the general shape, she couldn't find anything.
It was rather disappointing.
"How can you tell if it's a giant-ancient-turtle? I don't see anything!"

He couldn't help the small chuckle as she jumped back from the boulder so suddenly, his own confidence growing as he reveled in the ease of his story-telling. His mother had told him his uncle was a great story-teller too, and she seemed to be pleased when he made up stories, so long as he didn't get too carried away.
"Well, this looks kind of like a leg!" He said, reaching up with his front paws to brace it against the rock so that he was stretched out, balancing on his hind legs. "Maybe.. when the sun is out, they turn to stone?" He tilted his head curiously at the rock, as if it might tell him its secrets. "Then, when the moon is out, they come back to life!" He flopped down back onto all fours, looking at her with that same silly grin.

Ally completed her circle and came to stop by Fafnir as he reached up and indicated the leg. His imagination helped hers along, and the more she looked at it, the more convinced she became that perhaps he was right. At least while they were playing. Ally enjoyed reality enough- she wasn't sure she would ever know everything about it, there was no reason to completely abandon it for fantasy. But she still enjoyed games like this and letting herself go completely into the story.
"Do you think the Great Lion likes turtles too?"

He was obviously pleased that she was entertained by his story and as long as she was willing to listen, he was willing to spin it out for her. He knew when to pull his mind back and check back into reality, but as a cub, there was no harm in having a quick imagination - especially at times like these.
"I think he must," he said with a little tilt of his head. His eyes rolled up to the sky to look at the brightness of the sun before quickly averting to glance back at the cold stone before them. "If they are only awake while he is looking down at them, then they must be very close, don't you think?" He turned to look at her, a wondering look on his face.

"Yeah," she agreed when he explained exactly why she had jumped to that question. If they were only awake at night, they had to know about Him. The pride would probably have been nocturnal if it weren't for certain advantages to being awake and lively during the day- no reasons Ally would understand, at least.
"If this is it's leg," she said, moving around Fafnir and starting another circle around the 'turtle', "Where would it's face be? How loud would you have to be to wake it up? My brothers can be pretty loud when I'm trying to sleep, but I'm not made of rock.."

He studied the rock before him, batting lightly at his own tail as he considered her question. "Huh, y'know, maybe his head is tucked back into his shell?" He couldn't find any evidence of a head, though it wasn't as if he truly believed his own stories.
"I dunno, if it's magic, we probably can't wake them up," he said with a tilted head before pushing himself up onto his paws and stalking over to press his nose against the rock. In the wake of his story, it seemed most of his shyness had dissipated - he was in a comfort zone of sorts. He pulled his nose back from the rock and nodded, as if he had confirmed his suspicions. With a grin, he glanced over at her. "I wonder if they'll decide to start walking again soon."

Alcmene was too caught up in the story and investigation of the turtle to even realize how much more open and eager that Fafnir was being. She hopped around the boulder again when he suggested that maybe its head was tucked away, and looked disappointed when he said it was magic. She didn't have to truly believe it, but while they played it was all that mattered!
"Maybe! It's not going to be dark for a while though."

"True," he said with a little glance at the sky, peering up at the horizon as if he could magically change day to night. With a little sigh, he shrugged his shoulders and turned his head back to look at the rock-turtle before them. "I guess the only way we're going to know is if it's moved by the time we come back to look at it."
The problem with that, though, was trying to figure out how they'd tell if it had moved. He look around, flicking his tail as he did so, for some way to mark where their giant rock-turtle was sitting.

"Yeah, good idea!" she agreed brightly, mimicking him and looking up at the sky and then back the turtle-rock. She skipped another circle around the rock, deciding it wouldn't be too hard to determine if it moved over just one night. It was heavy, the grass would be all flat. If it moved, they could tell if there was flat grass around!
"The turtles are reeeeeeally big," Ally commented, squinting off into the distance and trying to see if there was any flat grass nearby, "The ground would be all flat if they stop to sleep."
Maybe they could find where the rock-turtles had come from if they found a flat, abandoned nest.

"You're right!" he exclaimed with a grin stretching his maw wide. A certain degree of respect gleamed in his eyes as he glanced in her direction, simply because she figured out just how they would know where the turtles had been. It was certainly something he never would have thought of. He was creative and quick on his feet but she was obviously somewhat of a deep thinker.
He seemed to immediately get the same idea she had, as his eyes roamed over the the land beyond where the 'turtles' lie. "Do you think maybe there are some big circles out there, where they were sleeping before?"

"Yeah! Exactly what I was thinking," she said, skipping a couple steps around on side of the boulder and then back to Fafnir- about ready to suggest they go and look for some of these abandoned nests. But then she remembered what she was supposed to be doing this afternoon, and her ears drooped.
"Oh no," she mumbled before try to perk back up a bit and speaking up, "I'm supposed to be doing something with my dad this afternoon, I should go home."
And they were having so much fun! How disappointing.

The grin on his maw broadened as she skipped around to meet him, but as her ears drooped, the grin began to fade. He was about to ask her just what was wrong when she admitted that she was supposed to be doing something with her father. Where his grin had been, a frown replaced it and his own ears began to droop before quite visibly plastering to his head.
"Ally, if you had to do something, you didn't have to come play with me," he said with a frown, his brows furrowing into a deeply knitted 'V'. He chewed at the inside of his cheek out of worry before hesitantly taking a few steps away from the rock. "I'm sorry I kept you out." Now he felt bad, for surely her dad would be angry!

Ally felt her stomach twist when she realized how guilty Fafnir felt for playing with her. He wasn't supposed to feel bad, it was her fault! And she didn't like making others feel bad, she'd already spent a great deal of her life trying to impress her parents.. it's what she did, and mostly through natural enthusiasm.
"No, don't be sorry!" she cried, shaking her head, "I wanted to come play! It's OK, I'm not that late!"
