I think it's an upper for the AR system.
Although, the page says it's not an evolution of something, so I dunno.

Anyways, detach.-mag. .338 Lapua FTMFW!

EDIT: Oh yeah, I think that's one of Magpul's grips for 2009.
its a bolt-action right? i mean it has the handle for it wtf who makes a modern rifle with a bolt action scream
... You're serious?

*crys* i think he is gonk gonk gonk

... manual actions are known to be more accurate than semi-autos.

Also there's the advantage of not having a big piece of brass flying out at high speeds, making noise and reflecting light.

I've always wondered if it would be possible to make a semi-auto that would feed ammo from the right side of the magazine and eject the spent casing into the left side, so that you keep your brass, you don't make so much noise, you don't leave brass all over the place, and it's a closed-off system, which can be silenced more efficiently.

Hmm, it could be. But a system like that may inherit problems. What would you do with the casings? Box to reload, box to unload?

But a side loading design that ejects out the bottom would be good as well.
If it's for a longer range one so that the noise from the casing doesn't really matter.

Besides, why would they police the brass in a warzone? Or are you hinting at spec ops kinda s**t?

Not quite box to unload, box to load, more like a partition down the center. It would make either a rather thick magazine, or a low-cap one, I realize that, but it would be worth trying.

Yeah, I'm thinking either spec-/black-ops or urban warfare. Brass is round, floors are hard, and rolley things underfoot aren't a good idea in combat.

I suppose. But then again I was imagining two people proning in a sand pit. neutral

Yeah, after that first shot the sniper should gtfo, and if there's a second the sniper should gtfoasap before a world of hurt is rained down.
And yeah, I guess that would involve running really fast and of course, like you suggested, s**t on the floor can make you trip.

I'm thinking five guys storming a building with cement floors, and shooting up a world of hurt in a narrow hallway. Then guy five trips on the spent casings of guys one and two, breaks his tailbone, and is carried back to the humvees by guys three and four.

Are you suggesting that the casings be retained on every type of weapon?

No, just the one weapon designed that way. But using it would mean you don't have a s**t-ton of casings rolling around on the floor. Rolling casings are a trip hazard, and you don't want to fall and break your a** in the middle of an op.

Pssh.
It's a 30-06.

Let's compare:

180 grain .308; BC of .474 at 2,700 FPS.
250 grain .338 Lapua: BC of .768 at around 3,000 FPS.

The higher the BC, the flatter it flies.

Well yeah, but;

180 gr (12 g) Nosler partition 2,900 ft/s (880 m/s) 3,315 ft·lbf (4,495 J)

30-06 is .308?
:/

Whoops, typo.
Anyways, the stats there are for a .30-06, not .308.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnson_LMG
The Johnson LMG feeds from the left from a mag and goes the right.

The PKM feeds from a belt from the right going to left.

I can't really think of any laws of physics that prevents going from right to left, as opposed to left to right.

Anyways, I never could find a decent reason from someone to make a brass-catcher. No spent cases to go in Ghillie Suits.
Kind of what you guys said, but ye beat meh to it. >.>
Anyways, the .Mil channel said army snipers reload their own ammo suited for their own rifles.
So it might not be THAT unheard of.

Now what type of weapon were we talking about? Wasn't it a type of scoped rifle? Who, other than COD and some CS:S players, would storm a building with a scoped rifle?

http://www.chuckhawks.com/30-06.htm

Anyways, assuming your information is correct (I'm not saying it's not,) the .338 Lapua is still sending a bullet with a much higher BC a little bit faster.

This would produce around 7,000 J, and it would keep that energy for extended ranges because of said BC.

I was just referring to a rifle in general, not necessarily any specific type.

At first I thought we were talking about a long range rifle. Then any type, then a rifle, and now again we're back to any type?
