"What I want." He thought this over, "I'll try, but even if the whole pride is against me, what can I do?" Xiang wanted above all else at this stage in his life to be accepted by the pride, and for his demon to be strong, for his self to be strong, but could he be strong without the pride to back him, he couldn't go against them, he thought he knew that much.

"I won't ever take a slave myself, the rest of them, I guess they don't know better... you mean the slaves? You take orders from yourself then! Or from your demon, but then the slaves don't have a demon, and as slaves they're taking their orders from demons, right? ... So not demons, they're no good to us, and other demons we bring into the pride..." Xi had stood to rant and now paced around the older lion and the carcass of the prey beast to ponder this and anything else he wanted to ask of Hewa. "So if you don't want to take a non demon as a slave, what do you do with them, when they come to the pride lands?"

Ah now here was a tricky question. As a guard, Hewa had seen his fair share of non-demon folk coming and going wither knowingly or not. Many of them had no clue on who's land they trespassed, and once he informed them they seemed all to glad to get away. And Hewa usually let them. That might not have been what the boy wanted to hear, but it was the truth. And Hewa usually was one for the truth. "When I'm on duty, and I come across a non-demon, I tell them where they are, and who they're dealing with. If they decide they'd rather not be here...I let them go. It'd be cruel to force them when they're...I almost want to call them wise, knowing that this isn't the life for them. Those too dumb to run, or too stubborn...Those are the ones I let go on. Usually I circle back and alert one of the more...cunning members. If they need a slave, then it's their choice to intercept the wanderer." It was a complicated way of doing things, but Hewa was not a dumb beast, primed to fight all the time, and to be without mercy.

He noted the boy getting closer to the carcass and slapped the dead beast with a paw, batting it towards him some. "If you're still hungry, eat more. Even for me there's too much here."

Xi shook his head at the offer of the dead beast, another type of hunger overpowering the one in his belly, he continued pacing around for a little bit, thinking on this. "Let 'em go," he seemed to understand easily and nodded his head.
"Thank you, Elder Mahewa, I have to admit, I like your prospective. If you'll forgive me for saying it, you don't seem like... like a demon at all." He had sat now, his tail twitching to and fro, very near to the much larger lion. "I don't mean that you don't belong or anything," Xi quickly added to defend his thought process. "Just- You're not cruel or vicious, a-at least you don't seem- to me." He finished lamely, hoping he didn't inadvertently raise the beast within with such words, he didn't mean them as an insult. He wanted to talk about the inner demons, but didn't know how to really question the subject, that they existed had been enough for him until now, he never questioned the existence of his own, just knowing it was there, no matter if it was still silent.

Hewa chuckled and nodded. "Elder...?" Maybe to one as young as Xi he did seem old. Older than himself, certainly. It was the first time he'd been called 'elder' though. He rolled over slowly, rising to a sitting pose. He looked down at the younger lion, and smiled. "I don't seem like a demon because my demon isn't normal. Or normal as the pride sees it. And in my opinion that's a good thing. If I was like your idea of a demon, and everyone else was...we'd be nothing but a bleeding pile of bodies, biting and clawing at each other. You'll find that some demons prefer to do other things than fight." He idly flexed his claws, digging ditches in the dirt. "Do you consider that demons must be cruel or vicious? If so, does that mean YOU plan to be that way?"

"What else should I call you?" Xiang asked thoughtfully, he'd only meant it out of respect, not that he thought Hewa old. Xi looked up at the larger lion following is movements, seeing the muscle under his striped pelt, seeing the dark claws that had felled the gazelle, seeing the scars that marked him.

"What does your demon prefer?" the question was voiced because he was curious, he still pondered what Hewa had said though, and spoke freely, feeling that it was alright if he did so.

"The others, Hiam, they're said to be demons, no one questions them, they're vicious, they're cruel to me. I've always thought that was because they were stronger demons inside, that they were, right, or normal-" he used the word, but his tone was unsure now, "I want to be strong, and right. I want to be accepted within the pride as any other lion is, but- I feel my demon, it's silent, it doesn't speak, but it burns at me inside. I don't want to be cruel, I don't want to be compliant either, I don't want to be trod upon. If my pelt was dark no one would care what I was like, so long as I follow the pride teachings and was strong. I want the same no matter my color, but if I have to be vicious, or cruel or fight everyone, so they believe me- I would do it. I don't see another way."
