At first, he was afraid she was going to tell him to leave, and every muscle in his body was held rigid as if waiting for that blow. He held his breath, feeling his lungs filled to burst, his heart aching like it might explode. Then, all of a sudden, in a whirl of movement, she was forward and pressed into him. Her scent filled his nose, and his head was set into a whirl. He hadn't been expecting that at all, but everything felt completely turned around in that single moment.

"I won't," he murmured against the top of her head as he finally responded, leaning down to nuzzle against the dark tuft atop her head, "I'll never go anywhere again." He felt everything mending, slowly, in that one second. He knew it couldn't be perfect, not that quickly, but this meant she was forgiving him, or was willing to try. He shut his eyes as he leaned his head atop hers, drawing her closer to him, and letting out a sigh of release so deep it felt like it was lifting the weight off of his shoulders.

"I'm so sorry," he muttered again, feeling her shaking and the tears that were leaking against his fur. His own eyes stung, though he was trying hard to be strong for her in this moment.

She was shaky, she was upset but at that moment, that was exactly where she wanted to be. Her heart was racing, her head was spinning and she only waited there, clinging to Fafnir as though he might change his mind and go away again. After a few moments, she started to calm down. She stopped shaking but the fear, the worry remained. She didn't want to but she had to, so with much hesitation she took a step back, a sad look on her face.

"I don't want you to go," she said again, her voice sad but sincere, "But I can't just trust that you'll stay. It's going to take some time, Fafnir, I'm sorry." Her words were slow, and it hurt to say but she had to speak truthfully. Worry that he would not accept this loomed despite his assurances that he would do whatever he had to to prove his love.

He let her go, albeit reluctantly, as she took a step back. He knew even before she spoke that what she was about to say was something he probably didn't want to hear. When the words finally left her lips, the relief that had been written across his face melted away, replaced with a flash of pain before he managed to tuck it away. This wasn't her fault, it was his own, and he knew that. There was no reason to take it out on her, or to let her see that her decision hurt him.

"I understand," his words were stronger, more confident than he felt them, and he even managed to force his face into a calm, despite sad, composure. "I'm not going anywhere, so when you're ready, I'll be right here, I promise." It hurt, he wouldn't lie, but if he abandoned her now just because he couldn't handle it, what did that show her?

He hesitated then, looking from her, then back up to the little bird in the tree. His tail flickered behind him with a nervous twitch and he let his pale gaze settle on her again. "I suppose I should let you get back to what you were doing," after all, he thought he'd interrupted something important, "and just, see you later?" He wished things weren't this terribly awkward at this point.

She felt it get harder to breathe as she looked at him, as he reacted to what she said. It was hard to miss the pain in his face, however fleeting and well hidden it was. It wasn't so easy, it couldn't be so easy. She could have put herself through worrying whether or not Fafnir was going to stay and just be with him but she wouldn't do that. She couldn't do that to herself, to the pride. She didn't know how much he understood about what loving her, being loved by her meant ultimately. But they could work on it, they could take their time, just like they should have from the start.

When he said he would be right here, she smiled sadly. It was hopeful, very hopeful. She was surprised when she was reminded that this whole time they had been talking and arguing, Biti had been sitting in tree above them. Ally turned her head to where she had left the little bird, then looked along the branch for him when she saw he was missing- stopping at the leafy end of the branch where Biti had put himself. She sighed, her smile becoming a bit happier.

It wasn't a happy feeling, having to watch him go again but.. this was sufficiently awkward, a lot to deal with and Biti was still stuck in a tree. Feeling like she needed to sit down, she did, and only nodded quietly when Fafnir said he would see her later. She'd ruined the chance a simple, happy reunion where they could just sit and be together but.. this would be for the better. He would be back and she would begin to accept that that was what would always happen.

Biti had been watching from his spot in the leaves, rather dumbfounded. He didn't understand love and was confused by how Ally went from being so angry to so sad and then.. he wasn't even sure what she was now. He chirped awkwardly when attention was drawn back to him, poking his head behind some leaves at first and peeking out again just in time to be spotted by Alcmene. He chirped awkwardly again, but then turned his attention to Fafnir to see what he would do next.

He spared a weak smile for the little bird as it peeked sheepishly out from behind the leaves at the end of the branch. At least he had been a bit of support and happiness for Ally during this trying time. They still had a lot to work on too, and he was glad that she had a companion to lean on, at least figuratively. From what he had seen before he interrupted, she was happy with the little chick.

"Alright," he said gently, in response to her nod of dismissal. For a moment, he hesitated, before finally deciding to step forward and give her a gentle nuzzle against the side of her neck. Then, with a sad smile, he took a few steps backward and turned to head away. It was something, at least, but it still hurt to walk away. It took everything in him not to look back, because he wasn't sure he could make himself leave if he did.

Her breath caught in her throat when Fafnir leaned in and nuzzled against her, and she couldn't help but follow him slightly as he backed away but she stayed where she was. She watched him walk away and finally she sighed. It almost didn't feel real, like any of that had happened. She felt too many things, a strange lightness despite all of the worry and all of the drama. Fafnir was back, he was sorry and he was willing to do whatever it took to stay.

She caught herself nearly crying again before she pushed herself back up, steadying herself once again. She wasn't quite so enthusiastic about the flying lesson now, but she still had to get Biti down.

"Ok, c-come on," she said.

Biti's purple eyes kept moving. Back and forth, back and forth. He wasn't staying, that was kind of confusing. But it seemed to be because Biti obviously needed her help here, which was true though.. had Biti been a braver little bird, he would have argued. That, however, would have involved interrupting them and finding a way to get down from the tree safely. Neither of which he was confident enough to do just yet. He watched Fafnir go until he could not see him anymore, hopping along the branch again slowly as he did. Then he took a deep breath and prepared to jump.

Fin.
