I do not believe enough people live in Montana to even qualify for any kind of vote.

But, in all seriousness, probably not. The thought process here is kind of stuck about twenty years back.

And if I say to you that I wanted to, know that I lied

Australia does not recognize any kind of gay union. It does, however, recognize de facto gay couples. The only reason for this is to correct a centrelink glitch that was if a gay couple were living together, they were only roommates, and this gave them more money.

Kevin Rudd does not recognize gay marriages, and I doubt that within his next three years in office he choose to. His views are very centred on families of the conservative traditional style.

He presents himself as someone who will give a fair go for all, but really he's just as bad as howard with a giant smile slapped onto his face.

Why not? I personally don't think gay marriage should be legalized. I don't think STRAIGHT marriage should be legalized. I don't think 'marriage' and 'legal' should be used in the same sentence. Marriage is a purely religious construct, and its very existence in our lawbooks is an affront to the separation of church and state. I'm all for a 'civil union' with all the same legal rights as marriage, but I'm still miffed that being married gives you special privileges.

It should be noted, however, that by 'not legalized' I don't mean 'illegalized', I mean 'unregulated'. Laissez faire. Marry whoever or whatever you want, so long as the Pope is fine with it. Or, y'know, whoever runs your religion.

And slightly more on-topic, there's no way we're going to see legalized gay marriage in this state. AZ is possibly the most conservative state without 'exas' in its name.

Well, I SORTA agree, sorta disagree.

Just because the concept of marriage might be religious born, doesn't mean it shouldn't have a "legal" counterpart. Legal conjoinment garners legal benefits that should not be removed from practice, in my opinion.

I just think they need to open the boundaries of who and what you can marry. I figure, as long as the person/creature/whatever can legally consent to marriage, then congratulations, and I pray your children (if you have any) aren't as ugly as you are.*

*(that comment is not aimed at anyone in particular, it's just me being a d**k, in the name of humor)
You may have a point. A civil union isn't a bad thing (though these days it's pretty useless), but the gays who demand MARRIAGE and nothing short will do need to be c**k-slapped, and not in an enjoyable way.

Well, they're just looking for COMPLETE equality. If they can have the same thing, same legal benefits, and everything......but they can't call it the same thing, then that's still discrimination, because it's not 100% equality.
I've seen someone bitched out for supporting a 'civil union' with all of the same legal rights as marriage. That's all the government can GIVE you. But no, because it's not CALLED marriage, it's NOT marriage. Rose by any other name, ******** class="clear">

is a civil union exactly the same as a marriage (sans religious component) though?

i was given to believe that marriage makes your spouse your next of kin and civil union does not. so it makes a big difference.

example: your same sex partner of twenty years, who you have lived with as if you were married, is in an accident and dying in hospital. their relatives do not approve of homosexuality and your partner was excommunicated 20 years ago. the hospital will call them to notify them. they may or may not come and visit. if you call the hospital (who will not notify you as you are no relation) you will not be able to find out any information nor will you be allowed to visit as you are not next of kin.

and, fresnel, marriage is not and never has been a purely religious construct. it has only recently been about romance and love, from the beginning it was a legal contract designed to engineer the offspring patterns and wealth mergers of families...it was born from religion yes but at a time when religion was the only law.

I live in Indiana so I highly doubt it. Unfortunately gay marriage is one of those things that I'm more or less indifferent about. I try to care enough to stand up for a side but I can't find it in me. confused

I have weird opinions on gay marriage. It's not that I'm against it, but I think marriage is a load of bullshit people use for benefits and to rub it in the faces of those who aren't allowed to participate. I think marriage should be scrapped altogether. If you need a fancy ring on your finger and a glorious ceremony to prove to somebody that you love them unconditionally, then there's something wrong with your social skills.

The thing with people who oppose gay marriage is that they aren't doing it to be hateful (at least most of them, anyway). Usually when somebody opposes something, it's because they think that it's a social problem, and well-minded people are going to fight for the policies they believe will cultivate a better society.
Lots of them are doing it to be hateful.

See, that's the pessimistic way to view marriage. You could also view it as a promise/symbol that you truly love a person and want to be with them forever. At least, that's how it's supposed to be.

Gay marriage actually just got legalized in the windy northern meat-ball and Ikea Land, everyone who objects to the notion are ostracized to an extent and people who speak out against it in public have been arrested for "Hate crimes against a group". Can you Americans think of a time when objecting to Homosexuality in public will be a crime? xp

I would hope not. You can't stop people from opposing a view or instance. I don't think objecting to gay marriage should be considered a hate crime.

What's in a name? Why is it SOOOOOOOOO important that it not be called a "marriage"? If it's the exact same thing, then why is the term still off limits?

Is a bear and if we gave everyone bears for gifts we wouldn't have to worry about things like marriage.

So the best solution for the world: mass breeding of roses of other names AKA bears.

People will give out these neo-roses as gifts, ending all relationships ever due to mauling, massive blood loss and eventually a horrendous death.

Not really or does Fresnel not know the difference between a "teddy_bear" and a bear?

And no Wing it's never too extreme, I often tone down my responses. 3nodding
