Swords in a modern military role?

It'll probably be a wakizashi that I get, or a short-medium European sword. Either would be more useful to me.

I looked into Badger Blades after Fresnel's talk about them long ago and kept them in my favorites. But if I could get a good blade for $150ish I would prefer that to $375.

@Stoic: Actually, it's more of a heavy saber, but half their business is katanas and I figure all their swords are made to the same standard.

I think it's a great idea, but Stoic briefly mentioned something about draw-time.

It's great other than that little issue. I can't really get into my head drawing a sword-type item from a sheath, in close range, during an emergency or combat situation.
