Kalefe is a tactical thinker. He's always coming up of new ways to help the pride. As a general rule, since his position doesn't offer him much to do, he often checks up on the cubs of the pride. He loves stories and remembers a lot about the pride before the plague. He's an older lion, already seeing his fair share of sunrises. In fact, some say he was around even before Konokubwa's reign though he won't say anything about it. Its the only story he refuses to tell. Soft and gentle he loves to gather the cubs up just before bed and tell them stories of the pride. Including its dark ages.
Backstory:
It was a long time ago. At least it felt like it. The ache in his paws every once in a while warned him it had been. He grew up in this pride, his parents deceased long before the plague. Maybe before Konokubwa's rise as King. He frowned slightly. He never liked that lion. In fact the two of them often were at ends with each other. He knew what would happen if the pride was cut off from outsiders. It wasn't that hard to figure out! Eventually there would be no one to breed with and they would ebb away into nothing. Just a faded story in an old legend. A foolish and brash decision he tried to talk him out of many times.
One of those times, or so he told, nearly caused the loss of his nose. He gave up after that. There wasn't much to be done if the King wouldn't listen. He couldn't risk his or his mate's life. It was too important, too fragile of a bond. They were an older pair, betrothed a long time ago by her parents. It was a rather sad union, actually, she was barren and so their line would end with her. He didn't mind that. They kept separate ways (often bickering about simple things) but after so many years ...well love has a way of growing. And he did, in some sense care for her and he certainly didn't want her to die over something he couldn't change.
Eventually the king died and the new one arose. At first, he expected a carbon copy of the old King. He wasn't going to bother with this one either. He was content to live out his days telling stories to the children. So long as there was no ruling against a good story he saw no problem with the new King. However, when the new royal opened up the pride he gazed at him with new interest, and a better liking. Ah, someone with a brain was now leading them. Someone he could probably talk to. Of course with all good things there are sometimes bad and before he knew it he was swept up in the falls of death. Their own fault. It was all their own fault. If they hadn't been so cut off, this illness wouldn't have hunted them out. A final curse by that dreadful lion.
Maybe Konokubwa still hated Kafele. That' why he wrought his curse on his wife. Too old, he remembered thinking as he watched her labored breathing and pained eyes. She was just too old to fight it. For the first time, besides some nights when they felt closer then normal, he laid beside her and told her he loved her. Nuzzling at the back of her neck. He was glad in some ways that she was so old. It didn't take long to claim her life and he expected he too would catch it and parish beside her but that lion was a devil. He wanted Kafele to suffer and grieve alone. So he made sure Kafele survived.
He stood at the edge of the pride watching the guards pace back and forth along its boarders. So many things were changing, for the better. He was moving on from his wife's death and he still had so many stories to tell before the sun sets on his time. Maybe he would be lucky enough to find a new wife and maybe meet an outsider for the first time. Yes, then he could listen to their stories and hold them in his heart like a candle, warming the lonely chill.
