That is BEYOND sickening. Just looking at that made me physically ill. At least the awful 'txt tlk' you see on IM and such is readable. That was just nonsense. At least when you're reading the original, the words you don't know are in the dictionary. rolleyes People need to stop being lazy and learn to appreciate the crazy little language they have.
I don't get the theory behind this whole 'dot mobile' idea, either. The idea is to help students choose classics and to master their revision. What is that supposed to mean? People can be sent these mangled snippets and summaries of great literature just so they can decide what to read? Frankly, I think that people who are going to read these types of books don't need txt-spk summaries sent to them on their cell phones. Ugh. xp At least a plan this moronic is bound to fail. I'll try to find comfort in that.

Yes, it is very sickening. Even when I text message on my phone, I type out the words. I don't see how anyone can translate the garbage in that article. Hopefully, students will reject the text messages and actually read the stories written out in all their grammatical glory.
OT: I loved your Kenshin and Kaoru doll fic. Very kawaii. ^_^

My suggestion to the editor - in a brief email - involved steel wool, a dripping wet body, a generator, and a pair of jumper cables.. stare

I do write out my sentences correctly over IM, at least, where even some of my more literate friends degenerate into txt-tlking freaks. eek Oh, thank you! heart Kenshin and Kaoru are so great. I'm glad you liked it. biggrin

Agreed, texting out stories loses most of the symbolism, metaphors, etc. In essence, you lose most of the story and are left with a bare summary.
Hey, is anyone reminded of "Fahrenheit 451" by this scenario? confused

I agree, it's harder to understand txt tlk than it is proper English. Also, it takes me more time to convert what I want to say into txt tlk that it is for me to just type out the damn words.
Sadly though, I could read all their txt tlk translations perfectly. gonk

Well, gods be damned! People have simply proven their lack of reasoning, will to learn and intelligence in one fatal blow! The classics are studied in that form of writing to view the evolution of the English language. It's done for a reason people! I swear, every great writer must be throwing up in their graves right now!
Ok, well, with that bit of ranting done, I suppose I should say something logical... First, this is butchering the great classics. Did we translate Hamlet from Elizabethan to Modern? No. We kept it the same, so the understanding of their spoken and written language could be there. Second, does this aid society? No. It simply reduces the already pitifully low intelligence rate.

sad *cries*
...I can't even read it. I'm so confused. Why are they ruining great literature? How on Earth do they expect to capture the essence of a story with '2b?n2b?'
...I can't understand it. These will not spread on unless humankind has lost the bare remainers of their intelligence.

They just wouldn't. Couldn't. If they did that, whoever's responsible would go bankrupt, surely? It's impossible, or if not, the stupidest thing anybody's ever done. Financially and literary-wise.
Plus it makes less sense than the original text and is utterly criminal.
