Calixte was too busy gloating and patting himself on the back to notice that the cub hadn't bothered with words before launching his next attack. The fair cub expected him to stay baffled for a while longer, to think about what he would do next. But it seemed that all the other wanted to do was flatten him, and he would become closer to success this time.

With less warning about this attack, he found that Heti caught him square in the chest, and he was surprised as he flew backwards into the sand. But he was Firekin! He had fighting in his blood, so why couldn't he think of anything to do? It was true, he hadn't had any formal training, but he had always thought that the Firekin were natural born fighters. Perhaps he had overestimated his own ability, and hadn't expected to actually get caught in the fight. But he sure as hell wasn't going to go down without a struggle.

"Darn you!" he growled, attempting to roll with the momentum of the attack in an effort to gain the upper position. But the sand was all around them, clinging to his fur and attacking his eyes, so it was difficult for him to tell where exactly he was in relation to the other.

"You won't win!" he called, flexing his claws in readiness for whatever came next.

He was actually rather surprised when he made contact and had to hold in a whoop of joy. He'd made a hit! He'd made a hit! Father would be so proud of him! He rolled backwards with Calixte, seperating somewhere along the way and opening his eyes to find himself lying - somewhat stunned - a mere couple of cub-steps away from the other.

He shook his head and leapt to his feet and dashed forwards, preparing to clap a paw across the other's head. (Nothing more than a play-fight cuff, of course).

Victory was going to be his!

Now we'll see whose fire burned brighter!

The cubs separated, and Cali lay on the ground, breathing hard and attempting to assess what had just happened. The other had landed a blow, and they had tumbled for a bit, yet still he felt out of breath. He never knew fighting would take this much energy! To make matters worse, the other was already rising to his paws and heading in for another attack!

Despite his tired legs, the younger cub managed to spring to his feet, and turned around in what he thought was going to be a hasty retreat. Yet then he remembered his pride, and knew that he couldn't just run away. What would his father think? Gray eyes narrowing, he planted his front paws into the sand. He grinned to himself, then moved his back paws as if he were trying to run. But instead of going anywhere, he flung sand up in a flurry, hoping to catch the other straight in the face.

This battle wasn't over yet!

The sand hit him full in the pace, stilling his paws and sending him into a sneezing and coughing fit. He struggled to breath for a moment, staggering back as he wiped at his face with a paw.

Tears welled in his eyes as the sand bit at them, making his vision hazy and forcing him to close his eyes to ease the pain.

He continued staggering backwards, desperate to keep away from the other despite the fact that he couldn't see very well and certainly couldn't dodge any attacks,

He cracked open an eye to try and find out where the other was, but Calixte was well camoflauged and Heti struggled to locate him against the backdrop of sand.

The sandy cub glanced back over his shoulder after he hadn't gotten hit by another attack. Had his last minute plan actually worked? He blinked, gray eyes focusing on a struggling black and red cub. It seemed that the sand had caught him straight in the face, and he was stumbling around blindly.

"I warned you about the sand. You shouldn't underestimate it," he spoke, circling the other slowly, but keeping a good distance away so that Heti couldn't lash out.

Within a few seconds, Calixte bounded over, ready to launch an attack. Instead, though, he smiled and simply butted the other on the side with his head. His plan was to catch the other off guard and make him fall over. That should really bruise his ego, Cali thought. Teach him not to mess with him.

Blinking rapidly, Heti could not block nor prevent the inevitable. The knock sent him rolling on his side, his paws flailing as he tried to regain his footing. And then he fell still, panting. Heti wasn't an intelligent lion but even he knew that this was over. It didn't matter whether he had the advantage of size when he couldn't see properly.

"You just got lucky." He huffed, his tail thumping against the sand. And then after a long pause he lifted up a paw to rub briefly at his eyes.

"I'm Heti. You got a name?"

The smaller cub grinned, immensely proud that he had managed to win his first fight, even though there had been little of actual fighting. But nevertheless! He was the victor and there was nothing that could bring him down. Even when the other said that it was just luck, he couldn't help but feel like he had accomplished something great. He was in such a good mood, he didn't bother to repute the other's words. Instead, he opted to remain friendly and answer the other.

"I'm Calixte. Nice to meet you, Heti." He bowed slightly, remembering the manners that his mother had been keen on teaching him and the rest of his nine siblings. Which, thinking of them, he remembered that his mother would probably be worried sick about him. He had wandered off during their nap, and had been gone for quite some time.

"Do you have a big family?" he asked, tilting his head slightly. Hopefully the other would be friendly now that their duel was over.

(( *spies the godlings in your siggu* Eeeee~ congrats! They are all so gorgeous!! heart ))

Heti, though seemingly still a little grumpy, seemed ready to be a bit more civilised and talk, now. He’d get over the loss after a few hours, and since this cub had beaten him he supposed he might be worth listening to. And, if he said he was Firekin, Heti supposed he might as well believe him. Since Father had seemingly fed him the wrong information he supposed he’d ask Mother about the ones who were neither black nor red.

Calixte. It was an odd name, indeed, but he supposed it was suitable. The cub was odd.

“Sort of big. I’ve got four siblings, my parents and aunts and uncles and grandparents. Not as much as some, though. Mother says the royal line is huuuuge! Actually, I think there’s royal blood in me, from my grandfather,,,” He shrugged a little. “But who cares about that. Mother says there’s no such thing as royalty now, not since things changed.” He was only just being taught about the politics of the pride in preparation for his apprenticeship and was still trying to get to grips with it.

“How about you?” He blinked. “You said your dad was…coloured like you, right? So that means there’s lots of sandy-pelts? Is that a Firekin colour, too? My dad said we all were black and red. But that can’t be right if your dad is here.”

The sandy colored cub was glad when the other didn't seem to want to press him for another fight. He wasn't sure he would be able to take another round, not yet. The sun was beating down on him and, even though he was lightly colored, he was feeling the effects. He wondered if the other felt it worse, or if he were simply used to it by now. Should every Firekin be used to it? Thinking this must be so, he bit his tongue about the heat and decided to simply bear through it.

He listened to the other as he was told about Heti's family. It wasn't that big, at least not compared to his own family. He wondered if ten cubs was normal for a litter. But he was merely a cub, and a male at that, so the dynamics of litters and giving birth were far beyond his comprehension.

When the red and black male spoke of being royal because of his grandfather, he wondered just who his relatives were. Although he was still quite young, his mother had taught them all their family. Kidondo was their uncle, so did that make them royal too? He shook his head, too tired to try and sort everything out within his head. Plus, he thought, it wouldn't be wise to try and start up another competition with this one. Best to leave things as they were.

"Me?" he repeated, rather stupidly. The sun was really slowing him down! "Oh, I've got nine siblings. Then my mom and dad, and my aunt and uncle and..." He paused, unable to think of more. So instead he turned towards the subject of pelt colors. "Yeah, my dad is like me. I've got two sisters like me, and a brother that's darker but not black." He shrugged when the other questioned whether it was a Firekin color. He hadn't been taught pride specifics yet, so he really couldn't say if it were normal.

"I get weird looks from others so... maybe it's not normal." He shrugged again, too tired to care. Then he yawned, which told him he hadn't been smart skipping his nap like that.

"Man, I'm tired. Aren't you? I think I'm going to go back to my mum and sleep off this darn heat. What are you going to do?"

"Nine?!" Heti gawped. That was a lot of siblings! He loved his brothers and sisters, yes, but he wouldn't want that many of them! The struggles for food from Mother! The fights for her attention! That was a tough deal indeed!

He listened as Calixte continued about his family's colours and gave a little shrug. "Must be okay. If you're dad is here, he musta been here for a while. Guess maybe its just rarer or something, right?"

He blinked, catching the other's yawn and tilted his head a little bit. "Me? Um, well, I guess maybe a little bit." A nap would be alright, he supposed. And he had earned it, hadn't he? Yeah. He had.

"Probably go find some shade." He replied. "Um, wanna do this again, Cal? The sparring thing, I mean? I could use some practise and you fight pretty good for a little guy!" He grinned, meaning it to be a compliment, though it really could go either way.

Calixte couldn't help but stifle a chuckle as the other showed great surprise at the number of cubs within his litter. He supposed that ten cubs altogether was quite a bunch, and it did get a little crowded at times. Mother and Father couldn't pay attention to them all at the same time, and he often had some time alone to himself. That was how he had managed to sneak off. There were so many napping that it was hard to notice that one might be missing. He supposed it could be both a burden and a blessing.

"Must be," he agreed, nodding his head. He hadn't learned much about the Firekin as of yet, but he supposed something must be acceptable about his coloring. Dad was here, so why couldn't there be more?

When asked if he would like to spar again, the sandy colored cub's eyes sparkled at the challenge. "Absolutely!" he cried excitedly. "You were pretty good yourself." He grinned, not minding the fact that he was called a little guy. He was too tired to bother arguing. Besides, he was smaller than the other, so he reasoned that it was acceptable for Heti to call him small.

"Well, I guess I'll be off. I'll catch you later, Heti!" With that, he sprang off across the sand, back to his mother and his sleeping siblings.

Heti made a plan to ask his parents about pelt colours again later and nodded slightly weakly, looking somewhat distracted by it all. There had been a lot to think about!

He was brought back into focus at the compliment and puffed up his little chest, not able to hide a slightly smug expression crawling along it. "Yeah. Well we're pretty well matched. Watch out next time, though. I'll be practising a lot."

He rose as the other said his goodbye, watched him turn and dash off across the sand, then moved off himself, seeking some better shade in which to laze around in. He deserved some lazing time after that duel!
