I think that it's denial of human rights; you have the right to choose how to live your life and end it as you choose. I've had councilling for attempted suicide (yeah I tried it, so sue me) and now I'm okay... but I feel it's wrong to put someone in jail because they wanted to end their own life. People have reasons for suicide and it's not up to anyone else to decide whether or not they can end their life.

I agree with you that people should not be 'punished' for attempting suicide.

however, suicidal tendencies are viewed by our society as a pathology, a problem that can be fixed with medical help. People see potential suicides as victims of disorders that need saving. So, if the doctor says that a person is a significant enough risk, they will lock them up as a preventative measure.

Clearly I have missed some huge change in the legal system and American Psychological Associations standards for dealing with suicidal individuals.

People who fail a suicide attempt go to the hospital, might be placed in a psychological hospital for a month or so, and continue with therapy for a while. I have no idea what you guys are talking about.

Also, the government doesn't get money for people in jail. They have to provide all of the necessities and security for each jail mate, so tax payer's money is used. There isn't any profit, in fact the current jail system is a huge drain on money.

They put people in jail for it, my friend has to go to court.

Going to jail for a decision to your own self is retarded. Jail and rape will not mentally help you, only make you worse.

I don't think any of you know what jail or prison are like nowadays. they aren't going to send a mentally unstable person to a holding facility where they're going to get raped, or hurt in any way. Most prisons now have very good programs to help council these kinds of people. You can even get a college degree while in prison now. If they are mentally unstable the kind of place they would go to would be more like a paid vacation. My uncle went to prison for 2 years, for selling drugs, and he could get pizza whenever he wanted, they had plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, more than enough to keep you occupied and happy. Not all prisons are as bad as people seem to think, and they aren't going to send a suicidal person to one that's terrible.

Our prisons are sucking up so much of our money it's ridiculous. They are digging a hole, and quickly. They might make some money off of short term holdings, but they aren't making any kind of profit.

The minor prisons actually seem great. It's like a hotel room. They are very nice places.
However, there are prisoners much harder than that.

Yes, but someone who is going to jail for attempted suicide isn't going to go to one of those "harder places".

Suicide is a form of murder, which is a felony. So yeah... it's not stupid. And it only happens when you fail and get caught.

So...then..by punishing them for failing, we're helping..who?

But even then, jail really isn't needed. This is more of a mental problem a something to your own self than the law.

I think what a lot of you are failing to realize is the kind of help these people can actually GET in jail. They aren't necessarily being "punished", they are being sent there because it is the best facility for them to receive help. Yes, there are "mental" facilities out there, but they tend to be worse than our jails, and less helpful as well. Also, the people who are put in jail are usually only set for a short few months, if a set period is set at all. What I mean is, every month they will be reviewed for parole, and if the "officials" feel they are ready to leave, they will be allowed to.

I am happy, as is the rest of my family, that my uncle is in prison. We don't like that we rarely get to see him, but he's getting the help he NEEDS there. As with my step brother. He's in prison, and he needs to be there. He has been to a mental facility, and they didn't do s**t for him. The prison he is in is getting him the kind of help he needs.

To say that suicide is only about oneself is naive. Suicide effects more than just the person committing it. It affects their family, friends, everyone that knows and loves them.

I had one of my best friends kill himself in high school. I grew up with this kid, his parents were friends with my grandparents, we talked every day. He had a TON of friends and people who loved him. His dream was to go into the Air force. Unfortunately, he ha a depression and drinking problem. He was caught with a bottle at school, and pulled out of class. He thought he was going to get an underage drinking ticket. If you ever get one of these, you won't be allowed into the air force. He thought he's dream was ruined, so he took his life. He wouldn't have though, they weren't going to charge him with it. Maybe if he'd had some kind of help he'd still be with us today.

I myself have attempted suicide twice, once while dating my now fiancée. I no longer have depression issues, but to think of the kind of pain I would have caused him made me realize how selfish I was being. I wouldn't have what I have now. I would have been hurting everyone around me.

I think people should be punished in some form if they do it in a public place, because something like that would definitely scar a lot of people pretty badly.

Jail however, is way too much.

Is anybody reading my posts? Jail is the best way to get these people help. It's not usually even a normal term sentence.
