The easiest way to learn these is simply to learn these first. Don't learn a verb in any form other than dictionary form. From there, there are tricks and hints to altering them to other forms. For instance the te-form song is used to remember which kind of verbs qualify for what form of te-form. The song follows the same tune as "The Battle Hymn of the Republic"
Te Form Song: u, tsu, ru -> tte mu, bu, nu -> nde ku-> ite gu -> ide
u, tsu, ru -> tte mu, bu, nu -> nde ku-> ite gu -> ide
u, tsu, ru -> tte mu, bu, nu -> nde ku-> ite gu -> ide su -> shite u-verb te fo-mu
