Although the context of this question may be key, I've learned that どちら in a response is fine. Maybe you mean that as a simple statement it is incorrect, but if posed a question 犬と猫とどちらのほうが好きですか。
どちらも好きです。
Should work. Of course different people are taught different things, but did you learn this as incorrect, or is this just a context mix up?
